Re: Single A Top 20 12/29/2019
The various holiday tournaments, classics, and what have you are behind us now (with the exception of the oddly scheduled SSP Premier), and the bulk of conference and section play begins as the calendar turns to 2020 (yikes, where have the years gone?!). Unlike the AA side, the top teams remain fairly stable. However, there is a notable drop off after that group, and things start to get ugly near the back end of the rankings.
1. Hermantown (9-1-1) [LW 1]
W 4-1 vs Brainerd, W 13-1 vs Fort Frances, W 7-1 vs Buffalo
After a slight challenge from Brainerd, the Hawks blasted their final two foes in the Hilltopper Classic. I guess this means they would likely be the second-best team in 8AA (insert emoji of choice here)? Things become a lot more interesting when Cathedral pays a visit later this week.
Next: Fri vs SCC
2. Warroad (11-0-0) [LW 2]
W 9-0 vs Grafton, W 6-0 vs Osseo, W 6-0 vs Int'l Falls
The Warriors likewise had no trouble dispatching their competition, racking up three lopsided shutouts in their Hockeytown Holiday Classic. Warroad should continue to cruise this week against two lesser 8A foes.
Next: Fri @ Fergus Falls, Sat @ Detroit Lakes
3. St. Cloud Cathedral (9-1-0) [LW 3]
W 6-1 vs River Lakes, W 4-3 vs St. Cloud, W 9-3 vs Mankato East
The Crusaders survived a bit of a scare from crosstown rival Generic St. Cloud, but otherwise rolled through the holidays. I debated on bumping Cathedral down behind EGF, but their recent Orono win ended up being the tiebreaker. The trip to Hermantown is one of the most anticipated games of the year.
Next: Fri @ Hermantown
4. East Grand Forks (8-1-2) [LW 4]
W 4-2 vs Mahtomedi
In their only action of the week, the Green Wave pulled away from Mahtomedi to pick up a quality win . EGF returns to wading in the North Dakota pool, which I'm sure is fun for the team, particularly the Grand Forks rivalries, but doesn't help much for ranking purposes.
Next: Mon vs Bismarck, Thu vs GF Central
5. Orono (10-1-1) [LW 5]
W 13-0 @ Virginia, W 8-3 @ Hibbing, W 6-5 @ Greenway
The Spartans picked up three wins on their Range tour, but Saturday turned out to be an adventure. After dominating the first period and racing out to a 3-0 lead, Orono hung on for dear life as Greenway mounted an epic comeback, but ultimately pulled out the victory on a fluky goal as time expired. The menu now features pretty light fare over the next few weeks.
Next: Fri @ LDC
6. Mahtomedi (8-3-0) [LW 6]
L 2-4 @ EGF, W 5-1 @ Alexandria
After the Zephyrs took their second straight loss to a higher-ranked opponent, things were looking grim. But they answered the bell and blasted Alexandria Saturday, solidifying their spot here in the rankings. Mahtomedi faces a typical week in the Metro East, with a weaker Class A foe and a strong AA squad on the docket.
Next: Thu vs Sibley, Sat vs STA
7. Alexandria (8-3-0) [LW 7]
L 1-5 vs Mahtomedi
I looked for a reason to drop the Cardinals following the blowout loss to the team just above, but couldn't find another team I could justify rating this highly. Alex has wins over Delano and Little Falls, albeit early in the season, and had EGF in the ropes. We'll see if they can rebound against two middling 8AA opponents later this week.
Next: Thu vs Brainerd, Sat @ Bemidji
8. Thief River Falls (7-4-1) [LW 8]
W 4-3 vs Eveleth-Gilbert, 4-1 vs Fargo North
It wasn't pretty (though few TRF games are), but the Prowlers managed to escape their holiday classic unscathed. The Fargo North final was deceiving, as TRF tacked on two empty-netters. Rupprecht has returned to form after some early season hiccups, and this team is tough to score on. They host a similarly enigmatic Rogers group in an odd matchup.
Next: Fri vs Rogers
9. Duluth Denfeld (9-2-1) [LW 10]
W 5-3 vs De Pere, W 6-2 vs Roseville, W 2-1 (OT) vs Owatonna
The Hunters bagged a couple of victories over decent AA competition in their holiday tournament. Though not particularly impressive, it is good enough to jump up a spot. Denfeld should cruise in their only game of the week.
Next: Fri vs Kennedy
10. Mound Westonka (8-3-1) [LW 9]
Idle
Lowering MW a tad is more of a course correction on my part, since they obviously did nothing to hurt themselves. After a full two weeks off, the White Hawks finally face off against Delano in a critical section contest.
Next: Sat vs Delano
11. Little Falls (10-2-1) [LW 11]
W 9-1 vs WF Sheyenne, W 11-4 vs Willmar, W 6-1 vs North Branch
The Flyers laid waste to the opposition in their holiday event, including a talented, though underachieving North Branch team. LF is still stuck behind Mound Westonka due to the recent head-to-head loss. The trip to Monticello should provide a nice test, one of the few coming up on an otherwise light schedule.
Next: Fri @ Monticello
12. Greenway (3-6-0) [LW 18]
W 4-2 vs Delano, L 5-6 vs Orono
Uh oh, here comes that team with the ugly record again! Whether the Raiders have the juice to make a second-half run comparable to last year remains to be seen, but they took a big step in defeating Delano and fighting #5 Orono to the final horn. The upper echelon talent is there, but this group is very thin and can ill afford to suffer any more injuries.
Thu @ Hibbing, Fri vs Holy Family
13. Gentry Academy (11-2-0) [LW 13]
W 7-3 vs Kennedy, W 10-4 vs Northfield, W 4-3 vs SPA
The Stars won the silver division of the Herb Brooks Classic, romping over a decent Northfield team and picking up a second win over 4A foe SPA in the process. Given their schedule, it's hard to peg exactly how good this team is, but Gentry certainly looks to be for real, and I may be too low on them.
Next: Idle
14. Delano (7-4-0) [LW 12]
W 6-1 @ Hibbing, L 2-4 @ Greenway, W 3-0 @ Virginia
The Tigers are my ping pong team, bouncing up and down the rankings on a weekly basis. The northern swing went largely as expected, though a win over Greenway likely would have vaulted Delano into the top ten. The upcoming contest against Mound Westonka has big implications for rankings and section seeding.
Next: Sat @ Mound Westonka
15. Monticello (8-4-1) [LW 16]
W 6-1 vs St. Francis, T 3-3 vs River Lakes, W 3-0 vs Northern Lakes
Despite a questionable tie, the Moose bump up a spot this week. That probably says more about the lack of better options than it does of their play of late. Monticello has a big opportunity to finally pick up a quality win against Little Falls.
Next: Fri vs Little Falls
16. St. Paul Johnson (7-3-0) [LW 15]
L 1-4 vs Eagan
Next: Mon vs New Prague, Tue vs TBD
17. South St. Paul (5-4-1) [LW 20]
L 2-3 vs Hastings
Next: Mon vs Woodbury, Tue vs TBD
18. Tartan (4-5-0) [LW 14]
L 3-6 vs Farmington
Next: Thu vs Simley, Sat @ Anoka
19. Pine City (11-2-0) [LW NR]
W 6-3 vs Brookfield, W 4-0 vs Simley, W 7-1 vs Princeton
Next: Idle
20. Eveleth-Gilbert (7-6-0) [LW NR]
L 3-4 @ TRF, W 3-1 @ Crookston
Next: Sat vs Mayo
Out: North Branch (9-3-0) [LW 17], Mankato East (5-6-1) [LW 19]
Others Considered: Breck (4-7-0), Kittson Central (8-1-0), Mankato West (7-5-0), St. Paul Academy (7-5-0)
Notes:
- I am done with 1A and 3A until a team really steps up to make a strong case they should be ranked.
- North Branch is easily the biggest disappointment of the season to date, looking nothing like their talent should suggest.
- I realized that in my haste to put out last week's rankings that I neglected to have a #18, though the options in that range are ugly anyway.
- Morris/Benson is now 10-1-0 and has 10 straight wins. Congrats, and keep up the excellent work!
1. Hermantown (9-1-1) [LW 1]

I totally understand that position, and it’s a debate I have with myself nearly every week. Warroad has defeated the two teams ranked right behind them, along with TRF. Hermantown has fewer big Class A wins, but dismantled both Mahtomedi and Denfeld. It’s a razor thin margin between the two, and Hermantown’s game against Cathedral this weekend could shake things up.Green and White Fan wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2019 10:17 am Good rankings, but until someone knocks off Warroad, I would have them at #1. Re: Single A Top 20 12/29/2019
Hermantown is the clear #1 right now. The addition of that Virginia kid has made them crazy good. It looks like him, Biondi and that Hayward kid have been playing together for 10 years. That allowed them to move the Ely kid back to his natural D spot too, which is huge. I can’t see anyone beating them right now.Stang5280 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2019 1:29 pmI totally understand that position, and it’s a debate I have with myself nearly every week. Any word on the Health of Cathedral Forward Jack Smith. According to Hockey Hub he has missed 3 of the last 4 games. Cathedral has no chance against the Hawks without one of their top guns if Smith is out for this week's matchup.Jeffy95 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2019 1:42 pmHermantown is the clear #1 right now. Re: Single A Top 20 12/29/2019
I agree that HT is the better team and would be favored to win head-to-head (which is partially why I have them #1). But their schedule is so loaded with AA teams, particularly early in the season, that it is hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison. There are lots of different ranking philosophies, and some people may value a more “body of work” (especially within your class) approach.Jeffy95 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2019 1:42 pmHermantown is the clear #1 right now. And I do agree that having Pierce back on the blue line has made a huge difference this season.

These rankings have Gentry Academy far too low. I completely agree with QRF.

Gentry’s best wins are by one goal over Tartan, SPA (x2), and Rochester Century. Their losses are to TRF (1st game, but still) and St. Louis Park. You could convince me that they belong around 9th, but no higher. Gentry’s schedule does hold them back to some extent, but it isn’t like they have been shredding apart the opponents in front of them, either.

I think you’re probably right with placing them around 10. They’ve had a few romps over lesser teams but their D and G numbers are solid and they show strong offense with 2 in the top 20 state scoring (Furuseth, Hall). Schedule does make them a bit of a mystery but they're further along than anyone would have thought.Stang5280 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2019 5:15 pmGentry’s best wins are by one goal over Tartan, SPA (x2), and Rochester Century. Bottom line, it’s good to see another contender emerge in 4A with TG's move to AA.

Per Hockey Hub Preview of Cathedral vs. Hermantown, Jack Smith’s injury is serious enough to potentially end his season. Hopefully that won’t be the case, but shoulders are apparently a recurring problem for SCC.
Rugged senior forward Jack Smith, a state tournament standout last spring and top player in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League this fall, is nursing a shoulder injury that might sideline him for the rest of the season. The Minnesota Duluth commit is seeking a second opinion on the extent of the injury and his ability to play, but there’s little chance he’ll be back on the ice soon.

Wow with Smith out Cathedral becomes very normal. Will be a tough night up in Hermantown on Friday.
Bigger implications are that 6A is now WIDE OPEN Alexandria and Little Falls just became instant State Tournament Contenders not that they werent but this really evens out the field. What tough Blow for Cathedral losing a top-end talent like Smith kills their hopes of a repeat quest. Ohh well no one going to feel to sorry for a Private School.
Hermantown, Warroad, EGF ..... Seem to be the locked in Top 3
This news shakes up Class A and 6A in big way.
Any news on the Hagstrom Boy at Mahtomedi will he be back? If not Gentry might be able to give them a run in 4A.

Yes tomorrow most likely. Been trying to get injury news updated because Cathedral without Smith will Drop them Mahtomedi without Hagstrom will drop unless its short term. Just like if Hermantown lost Biondi or Warroad lost Slukynsky or EGF lost Parker or Orono Lost Simon they would drop.elliott70 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 2:18 pmAre u taking the week off?ClassAGuy wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 2:08 pmThanks Stang!Stang5280 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 1:48 pm Per Hockey Hub Preview of Cathedral vs. Hermantown, Jack Smith’s injury is serious enough to potentially end his season. TRF finally getting Healthy were missing key pieces in LF and St Paul Johnson played a role in those results.
Trying to get a ranking that will project the actual value of team with the guys who will be in the lineup.
