Zamman

Zamman, I didn't say that all parents are not involved. You're obviously doing a great job, as well as all of the other kids you're around. My statement had more to do with non-hockey players, or non-athletes, or even musicians of any kind. Some schools are better than others at getting parents involved, especially suburban schools. Urban schools are having a big problem with this... nobody's fault, it just takes some adjusting on both the part of a parent and that of the school. It has more to do with the large recent immigrant population in the cities than it does "bad" parents. Different cultures expect different things, so adjustments are needed on BOTH sides to make it work. You could also draw a correllation between immigration and the decline of hockey in the city... Johnson has always been good, and will be better this year, but now Harding doesn't have their own team, Como is struggling to keep their kids around, and the same is going for Minneapolis, where the schools are struggling to put enough kids on the rink. 20 years ago we had Harding, Johnson, Humboldt, Highland, Central, and Como (Cretin too) in St. Paul, and Washburn, South, Henry, Roosevelt, and Southwest (I don't think North had a hockey team 20 years ago...) in Minneapolis (please tell me if I'm forgetting somebody). Now most of these schools don't have their own teams.

What's my point? Demographics have changed, as have hockey teams. I know that hockey parents, by and large, are very involved. They/you/we want our kids to do well in school so we can go watch the games on tuesday and friday night (or whenever they are)! Second guessing the coach is also a favorite pastime of the involved hockey parent . The same goes for other athletics, as well as music and drama... parents are largely involved. I realize that some parents work 2-3-4 jobs to put food on the table, and are thus unable to support these types of activity. Many High School kids need to go home and take care of the house and their younger siblings, or go to work several jobs themselves. Not the parents' fault, they're doing what they have to do. It breaks my heart to think about how many great athletes, students, musicians, actors, etc... have never been found because of stuff like this. Sorry about this rambling... yes, lots of parents are involved in school, but there are also lots who are, for one reason or another, not involved, and schools are trying to fix this situation. ENOUGH!

Bring back one class for Hockey in Minnesota!

Yah toepull, I know the value of developing musical skills. My kids all take music lessons too. If the flute player is in the band, the experience is similar.

But the flute player JLS 81 was reffering too stayed up in his room all the time.

Its quite interesting the responses and the direction it went. I can tell by the responses that more people are thinking of NOW, or quick fixes. Think of it this way, maybe we will use the gardener vs the consumer and corn is the subject and the state fair is the goal. The farmer breaks the ground, preps the soil, plants the seed, waters, fertlizes and in then enters his prize corn in the state fair and wins his class. The consumer, drives around scouting all the corn fields he can find, picking only the best of the best, enters them in the state fair and wins his class. Who do you think feels better with the win!

Quote:
Packerboy - your comment

well, a kid can excell in music if they practice all alone in their room all day, or they can practice in groups and do just as well (in regional contests ,there are both varieties-solo and ensemble) but when it comes to a larger group-it really takes effort to get along with everyone because, speaking from experience, at the high school level, one kid not caring and not practicing brings the entire group down-meanwhile in hockey the team not only practices together, but lifts and conditions together and forms a closer bond-making for a more pleasant team experience.

The farmer in the dell

Post by packerboy »

Good question Jackson.

Who is the farmer?

It isnt the local public school. They dont do anything to finance or provide facilities nor man/woman hours for hockey.

Your local public schools are every bit the consumer as private schools and ultimately the colleges.

And - the local high school coach may be the consumer as well. Unless of course he's been in the field working with the youth hockey association.

Is anyone else getting hungry?
