Rapids played a great first period but the major killed any Rapids momentum. They once again started having difficulty moving the puck out of the zone. Bad turnovers in their defensive end. Lucky they didn't get put into running time. Rapids seemed to give up after the major. They're lucky they don't have to play Greenway.

Not sure exactly. Pretty even play as far as shots and pressure. Hermantown made the most of their chances. They had more quality scoring chances. Herms goalie was solid. I dont know. The Mattson line wasnt on the ice much in the 3rd. Not at all for about 10 minutes. Adams boarding call behind the Hermantown net was not very helpful.northwoods oldtimer wrote:What went south tonight?grindiangrad-80 wrote:Just had the pleasure of watching the annual beating by Hermantown. 5-0.
Another major penalty in the offensive zone.

Yep, Rapids looked like a hockey team in the first period. They did not match the effort or intensity in the second. Adams' major can be called Boarding, or Roughing, or whatever, but the truth is that he got a major for Immaturity and Stupidity. It was a bad penalty and could have been worse - both the penalty called and the impact on the Hermantown player.
It is frustrating to see Rapids keep getting these penalties. What do those cheap shots and unnecessarily rough play get them?! It seems like they should figure it out. If they are POed at somebody, why don't they try to win the game rather than "retaliate" and give them the game. I feel like I am starting to see other teams trying to provoke reactions out of Rapids.
Whatever the case, yes it looked like they quit after the major. The Hain-McGlaughlin-Miller line still showed some spark, but everyone else acted like they had other places to be.
I fear some character issues may be appearing for GR.

GR fans on this forum were complaining about those character issues last year when they were talking about not coming out to skate like they meant it as opposed to just showing up at the rink and etc. The people who pointed it out were ridiculed for it if I remember correctly. That kid who wanted to play and would or that kid who would meander down the ice to take the puck into the corner without passing it or shooting it because it seemed like he did not want one of his line mates to score. I have only seen a couple of their games this year and am very impressed with their youngsters but not so much with the older kids. I think that if GR is going to have any chance at all Rapids needs to bench their seniors and give their young kids a chance to save the season.TheHockeyDJ wrote:This.Immigrant Fan wrote:Yep, Rapids looked like a hockey team in the first period. Can we all just agree at this point that 2 of the 3 most overhyped, overrated teams Rapids and East aren't what everyone thought? Elk River is clearly the team to beat coming out of 7AA at this point. (Throw Wayzata in as the 3rd team that all the experts thought was the real deal).
Lets keep the Rapids excuses coming though! Sounds like Hermantown just took care of business last night.

That would be a pretty extreme reaction to last night. There really isn't a bigger platform, at this point in a season, to learn that penalties/immaturity kill momentum and cost you games. If they cant learn from the Hermantown game, then I'd see more merit in that. Still a talented team from what I've seen/heard.Wet Paint wrote:GR fans on this forum were complaining about those character issues last year when they were talking about not coming out to skate like they meant it as opposed to just showing up at the rink and etc. The people who pointed it out were ridiculed for it if I remember correctly. They won't learn from last night if their history is any indication.SFA1992 wrote:That would be a pretty extreme reaction to last night. Not just a reaction to last night. This has been a reoccurring theme with this bunch of SRs from last year and this year. They play when they want to and don't play when they don't. They take stupid penalties and etc. To top it off their best goalie is a kid who was only mentioned at "that other kid" or something like that before the season. What this season has shown is 2 basic things. 1 you can market the crap out of somebody but you can't make them be as good as the marketing says they are if they aren't or don't want to be. And that the Elite league is a joke when the kids who play on it are not even close to being the best players on the teams they are coming from.
Grand Rapids got beat by a better team, simple as that. Hermantown was ahead 2-0 before the 5 min penalty by GR. In addition, Hermantown had 10 minutes in penalties to GR’s 9 and GR could not score on the pp. The first lines of Herm and GR were both held in check, and all the scoring by Hermantown was from 2/3rd line forwards and defense. Hermantown’s fifth goal was shorthanded. Hermantown had 5 penalties yet still managed a shorthanded goal and a shutout.

Top 3 Lines
Poehling-Smith-McGlade
Johnson-T.Schneider-Enebak
Brandt-Kappes-Dufon
The Johnson-Schneider-Enebak line was phenomenal. They worked well together and accounted for 5 of the 8 goals.
S.Schneider and Klans have played a lot of top 6 and top 9 minutes so far this season and they didn't see the ice much, just a few shifts. Parks was also on the PK.
Not sure what to make of it. 12 forwards that can all play isn't a bad thing.

Hermantown clobbered them. Could have been 10 - 0 game easily.pekyman wrote:HT finally got the shutout!rainier wrote:Not quite.boblee wrote: Grand Rapids has lost to Hermantown by more than two three times. Two just happen to be two years in a row. Rapids won 3 of 4 meetings prior to that.
