@COHSHockeyPod 01/03/2016 Show with Karl(east) & YHH
We are back and start this week by recapping the recent holiday tournaments, (i.e. Schwan’s Cup Gold & St. Louis Park Tournament), in a speed round of Karl’s current Top 10 teams. We also mix in some apologies and college commitment talk. Finishing up this show we talk about a slew of great games happening this week with a prediction segment. Follow us on Twitter @cohshockeypod for live stats and updates from games. Thanks for listening.

Good broadcast, and credit to Karl for his logic and courage for his Minnetonka #5 pick, looking at quality of schedule, wins and losses to whom, and recent trendline. The at times underrated Tom Hanson is at .922 , helping keep Tonka in each game. (Looking ahead to next few years, could probably swap the Skips bantams into varsity uniforms right now and break the top 15 rankings)
Surprised no one mentioned Jason Smallidge in the Whos next to Commit segment.

and we already have a candidate for most ridicolous post of 2016 4 days in! Thanks West Metry.WestMetro wrote:Good broadcast, and credit to Karl for his logic and courage for his Minnetonka #5 pick, looking at quality of schedule, wins and losses to whom, and recent trendline. TS, I got to add this one: had to chuckle when you took credit for having Elk in your preseason top 10 rankings, but you forgot to mention you didnt listen to the rest of us when you omitted Blaine altogether!
( Anyway, I agree with you--people should pay a little more attention nowadays for hints at the summer tournaments These are not the summer tournaments of 25 or even 5 years ago, they are now very intense with most players participating. I was at that Elk/ Wayz game too and was surprised also, but frankly chalked it up to Wayz not expected to be very good this year either. I was also at the Eagan tourney where HF did so well, at the time I figured Will Garin would be gone by the start of the season so that was that. So I missed both Elk and HF in my preseason top 10)

WM,
I like the banter with you - and appreciate the reminder. I left Blaine out because I had very strong sources in Blaine, Fargo and Duluth saying Tufte wasn't going anywhere. So leaving them out was a "statement" of my sources.
We all know how that turned out. And quite frankly, I'm happy it did. It gives the HS game a boost.
I'm hopeful our coverage and podcasts like the one Danny, Karl and I are hosting is just another small piece to the puzzle to keeping more kids home for HS.
I can tell you, I'm having a blast engaging and seeing the kids we've followed since Squirts, PeeWees and Bantams. I hope you guys are getting use to YHH in that space?

Not impressed with grown men ripping on 15-18 years old teens who are still developing their game. Guess it comes with the territory in the "state of hockey". Maybe I am missing the "schtick" but calling out the young Edina player adds nothing to the content of the show. Thanks to Karl for keeping it classy!
I'm pretty sure they aren't trying to impress you OT. And you kids get off my lawn.northwoods oldtimer wrote:Not impressed with grown men ripping on 15-18 years old teens who are still developing their game. Your welcome to your opinion as misinformed as it may be. But your gripes don't seem to be stopping you from taking an hour out of your life each week to tune in. That sucks if these guys dinged your kid, I probably wouldn't be happy either. I will guarantee that TS has watched more hockey in the past year than you have in your entire life. And if it's stats you want go wheel around YHH a bit. I don't think these guys are passing themselves off as know it alls. Just some guy's having a beer around a fire Sunday night shooting the sh** about what they saw happen in the previous week. It's like any other good show that comes out, nobody is going to agree with everything but in reality it's a podcast. If it chaps your ass grab 2 buddies and do one about how COH is so wrong about this and that. In other words if you have a problem with these guys talking about kids who are already committed to college in 9/10th grade too bad, don't listen, do your ownNuts&Bolts wrote:Karl brings up the average hockey IQ of this bunch exponentially. Why does he hang with these guys? Based on TS comments I suspect he's tapped into a parent payroll for plugging some kids. Look at some stats and watch a game.

Totally agree, I enjoy the COHS podcast every week and think that all 3 add an element to the show.edgeless2 wrote:Your welcome to your opinion as misinformed as it may be. Guys I really like your pod cast and have listened to it multiple times. I would agree though try not to call out players or teams for negative things.SquirtC'00 wrote:We are back and start this week by recapping the recent holiday tournaments, (i.e. Schwan’s Cup Gold & St. Louis Park Tournament), in a speed round of Karl’s current Top 10 teams. On the ethics of it all, clearly some of us are, um, more comfortable being publicly critical of players than others. Still, by high school, I think kids can and should be able to take a little bit of heat, where appropriate. Tony is pretty good about being positive at the youth levels; this is kind of his outlet to finally say what he really thinks. (I tend to do this through mutterings at rinks and in PMs on this forum.) And we do offer apologies when proven wrong and play around with this...hopefully no one is taking it too seriously.
Who would take a guy from Duluth serious?karl(east) wrote:On the ethics of it all, clearly some of us are, um, more comfortable being publicly critical of players than others. I've actually come to appreciate old TS a little more....we are similar in many regards. Both full of ourselves (at least I can admit it Tony Scott), both think we are right about everything, know everything hockey related (usually wrong, more than right) but still willing to take it on the chin when we are wrong! Hey Tony-you out there? We long lost twins perhaps?karl(east) wrote:On the ethics of it all, clearly some of us are, um, more comfortable being publicly critical of players than others. Well this is a good debate, and my 2 cents would be to err on side of caution against naming individuals unfavorably, especially underclassmen. Seniors, especially with D1 or USHL already in the bank is another matter, they should be able to take a little so long as respectful .
Goes without saying , but Important to remember all kids playing at this caliber are dedicated , hard working and with supportive families. But like everywhere, many can have challenging situations going on outside of their hockey world .
One podcast segment I thought was very appropriate and humorous was: which teams owe us the pundits an apology and which teams do we pundits owe an apology. Keep that one up for sure
