A couple of years ago, I was working with a guy that was an Edina resident. I was telling about a boy (99') my son had played with and mentioned that his family moved to Edina just for the hockey. He looked over at me with disdain and says, "you do not MOVE to Edina, (pause)..... You Achieve Edina!!" After I threw up, all I wanted to do was chock him till he was stone cold dead!! Yes, I hate Edina!!

I totally agree with you on the older part, Edina however is the richest suburb in the twin cities according to this link.

.
The link does not say that. The link says it has the wealthiest zip code in the state. There are 6 zip codes in Edina. 2 that they have ranked. If 1/3rd of the city is wealthy that does not make it the wealthiest city in the state. Also, article is a bit outdate coming from 2011.
This article came out two months ago and shares a much different story, while also using zip codes for data. I woudn't take much from it because it seems to be pretty bad quality and the populations seem off for cities, so the wealth numbers could be off too. But it is more recent.
http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/minnesot ... cities-mn/

This Link claims victoria as the richest and it is a bit more thorough http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/generalm ... ar-AAbYbkq

In the end, all of these are opinions and each one will be different. I don't think Edina is the wealthiest suburb, not even close. They benefit from having areas such as Interlachen and Indian Hills that have a lot of money, but even then, much of the price of houses in influenced by the proximity to Minneapolis. It is much closer than living out on Lake Minnetonka. Other parts of the city are very comparable to south Minneapolis and Richfield.
But that is just my opinion on all that.
It really does not matter because regardless of who is the richest, they are all still rich and have more than enough money to give their kids the opportunity to play hockey.

I get what you mean. Sure Wayzata itself is prolly even richer than Edina but overall there are more rich people in Edina than anywhere else.

Reason being that Edina is close to 50000 inhabitants and half of the city at least is extremely wealthy. Wayzata is all rich people but the total population of the city is like 4200 inhabitants, past that you're in plymouth and plymouth is even close to wayzata in terms of wealth.

Wayzata, Victoria, Excelsior are very rich but very small, they represent a small number of people.

Eden Prairie might be one of the big second ring suburbs with alot of wealth.

You are right about Edina attracting alot of people to its hockey association for some reason, maybe it's the infrastructure braemar offers, maybe it's the history and success of the program, probably all of them together.

Do you think it might also come from the fact that kids from southwest minneapolis join Edina hockey association ? There is a big pool to draw from if you start attracting people from Southwest.
I don't look at the youth level much, so I didn't know they were getting southwest kids. But if they are, that certainly helps. Thats another big area of people, with money.
I think one thing that helps Edina is they are not great at any other sport like the other cities. Occasionally they have a good year in basketball, baseball or football, but they are no EP or Wayzata who are good at every sport year in and year out. Kids still play multiple sports, which I am in favor of, but most of them seem to care a little more about hockey. That is something that I have observed.

Well Sats will appreciate this fact. Lakville North are farmers are selling their farm land to big time home developers at an insane rate!! I say that LVN will be a 3-4 high school dominant community in the near future!! Edina will not have that type of growth, but one must "achieve" Edina......

Those are pretty intense feelings you have lol. Don't get so worked up over one arrogant person.
You know, there are arrogant and unpleasant people in other communities too, it's not like they are all in Edina lol.

It's been some time now, but not too long ago I read that Edina has more HS championships (all sports) than any other school. I think i may have seen them listed maybe on the back of a hockey program. Compared to the tennis program, the hockey program underachieves.

Edit: This from the Edina Athletic Boosters web site: "Edina High School has produced champions in nearly every sanctioned sport. In total EHS athletic teams have won 157 state championship titles -- more than double the number of any other high school in the state! "

Not exactly a one trick pony.

well yeah but if you look closely out of these 157 state championships :

most of them come from 3 sports :

- Hockey
- Tennis
- Swimming

Yeah, tennis is pretty successful, but I don't know how much competition there is in that sport. I mean the girls team won every year from 1978 to 1992 and now again starting in 1997. They are going for 20 straight high school championships. So, I don't know how much competition they have.
And for the most part, I was implying the larger high school sports (Football, Baseball, Hockey, Soccer and Basketball, hell I'll even toss in track, which I think Edina might be good at) I think in those sports, in Edina, most kids are focusing on hockey. In cities like Eden Prarie, I don't think hockey is necessarily the main priority.

But it's not just one arrogant person. I have also bumped into several Edina Hockey parents while hanging out in the 'Cities', and yuck... the amount of arrogance and disdain they display for anyone not Edina is sickening. I am sure there are some very nice people in Edina, but there are many more who are just over the top yucky people. I absolutely love, love, love seeing an Edina team lose out in one of our local tournaments and then we place into their hands the "sportsmanship award". Ha!

I will say this: Willard Ikola had a very nice hat, oh... he was a dang solid coach too. Back then, I could appreciate the legacy of Edina Hockey. The last 20 years however, their success is more the result of 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation great hockey families choosing to settle in this modest little hamlet we call Edina. The arrogant Pee Wee B2 parent who thinks he is too good to talk to a hick parent from outstate is the person who gives Edina a bad name. Edina is the Dallas Cowboys, or New York Yankees of Minnesota Amateur Hockey. They deserve the praise due to their storied history, but they also deserve the jeers they receive for the lack of class they often display.

Me? I would much rather sit and have a beer and discuss hockey with a Roseau, Warroad, Grand Forks, Moorhead, Duluth, Grand Rapids, Eveleth parent than one from Edina. I will hear stories about great teams and players from around the entire state, rather than one rich burb.

Prefacing this by saying I am sure this is a very small percentage of Edina residents as I have many friends and family from there that are not like this but I am sure many of us have experienced some Edina arrogance through youth hockey, as a hockey parent in St. Louis Park with his Hal Tearse taught USA hockey coaching certificate 00/01, I was asked to step in and coach a PeeWeeB2 early season tournament in Duluth when both coaches could not make the trip, first game against Edina PWB2 (great), lost 8-2 or so, The Park players were getting so upset as they rolled up the score because of intimidation (spitting in face, name calling taking runs at players etc) I told our kids "do not act like them" and more anyway after the game as we were walking out of the arena one of the Edina parents in his $250 loafers yelled over at a group of us "Hey" as he turned around pretended to pull his pants down and patted his butt. Oh thats where it comes from we thought!
Basketball, a great game for guys who cant play Hockey

Small town folks are definitely different than people from the metro 'burbs.
Be kind. Rewind.
