But they're goaltender is shaky at best. I noticed Nathe walking around in his jumpsuit and he has definitely put on a few since he left the team and it might take him some time to get back into game shape. I think in this game in particular however had Fergus buried on some of their chances they could have taken this one from the Crusaders.
I have the pleasure of knowing Nathe fairly well and he is in pretty good shape as is, he gained around 15 pounds of muscle in the off season, he told me apparently he's been running everyday. Also has been doing double practices to get back into shape, I watched him the other day and he seems to be in pretty decent shape, if not one of the best on the team.
Perhaps that is what I saw then, extra muscle rather than fat. He should be a huge addition back into this lineup. Good to hear that he isn't letting his off-ice issues hurt the rest of his season, and good for him to get back into shape.
Yeah he has been keeping his nose clean after this summert, as long as he keeps his nose clean he will be a huge factor in the otters season

@mitedad
Mann has an injured hip, Nathe had some charges this off-season and went to treatment to figure his life out, Nathe has one more game to sit out while Mann should be back by the time that fergus plays Alexandria on the 10th
@granitecity
Fergus Falls top 2 defenseman are out right now due to injuries and suspensions, Mann has injured hip while Nathe got some charges throughout the summer. Nathe will be back for the game against tech.

I did not know about this, and I don't think I should know about this.
This seems like too personal of a thing to post all over a website. Unless the player is okay with people sharing something this personal with strangers, I am not sure this should be up on here.

He has told to me that he isn't ashamed of it, he's proud of it, he wants people to know that he went to whatever extent that he could to change to be a better person, and to be a better hockey player.

Well good for him, improving upon yourself is in my eyes, one of the best things you can do. That is always impressive, especially for someone his age.
I had not heard of him before, but I am happy to hear he is doing well and I hope he stays on the healthy path. I will be rooting for him.

Tech vs Fergus

Post by SmallTownBigDreams »

St. Cloud Tech faced off against the Otters. Was a great game to watch with quite a bit of action. Otters blew a 4-2 lead in the third to fall to Tech 5-4. Fergus Falls goaltending is certainly a bit shaky, they need to find someone to start playing consistent. Tarczon was out for the otters with an injury, Kampsula quit the team, and Mann is still out due to an injured hip. It was Nathe's first game back and he logged A LOT of ice time, playing almost the entire game. He started his senior year off with a nice 1g and 2a in the game. Once Fergus's injuries go away they certainly will be a tough team to play against, but until then they are a bit shaky. A young team and the young players don't understand quite yet that they have to work much harder in highschool compared to bantams. Once Tarczon and Mann are back the young players shouldn't be much of an issue with two fairly good seniors are back.

How do you blow a 4-2 lead and lose 5-2 ... did they take 2 goals away for performance reasons or a penalty?

Even with the three schools in St. Cloud Little Falls still is not better than Sartell, Fergus, or Alex. And the bantams that move up to high school will be playing against kids 2-3 years older than them who have played at the high school level for awhile. I'm not saying the Flyers won't be good. But they just aren't contenders this year.

Mann also did not play. Poor Peter Johnson was working his tail off.

Apollo takes on Alexandria, Sartell, and Cathedral this week. This week should be really telling of how good Apollo truly is this year. If they take all 3 games they should lock themselves in as the No. 1 seed for sections. It feels weird saying that so early but they only play Cathedral once, and even if they split with Sartell or Alex on the season, a sweep this week very well could lock them in as the front runner.

Thoughts from the Tech Sartell game. For sartell Spencer Meier is a great defenseman and player barely leaves the ice for the sabres. As well as Keenan Lund easily the fastest player on the ice and led to many chances. Hagstrom kept Tech in this one making a number of very fine saves. Should be a very interesting game for Sartell vs Apollo later in the week. Another thing about Tech their top two lines can keep them competitive, but they do not have much besides that.

Tech has some younger players that were great Bantams last year that should develop throughout the season as they learn the high school game. That being said, this section is very competitive and overall has some of the best depth in any class A section. Although it is still early, here are my rankings from what I have seen so far.

1a. St. Cloud Cathedral (5-1)
Best resume out of anyone in 6A so far with their only loss coming to EGF on the road. Has a huge matchup with Apollo this weekend that should help separate these two teams. Top 10 team in Class A
1b. St. Cloud Apollo (2-1)
Has only played three games so far so it is hard to know what we are going to get from Apollo this year. The one goal loss to Bemidji is respectable and the Eagles have won both games since including a nice win over Alexandria. Top 10 team in Class A.
3. Sartell (5-1)
The Sabres have been a surprise so far this year with their only loss coming to an undefeated AA Brainerd squad that has been scoring in bunches. A rivalry game friday night vs Apollo will be a nice way to compare two of the top teams in the section. A win could prove Sartell as a legitimate top 10-15 team in class A.
4. Little Falls(5-2)
Kind of a gutsy pick here but i Am going with the flyers here at #4. Wins over Fergus Falls and Alexandria prove that LF is better than the last few years and could provide an upset come playoff time.
5. Alexandria (1-2)
talented program that will most likely figure things out in the coming weeks. Lost an enormous senior class from last year which will give the young guys a ton of ice time early in the season to gain some experience. Will still be very relevant throughout the season.
6. St. Cloud Tech (2-2)
First year in class A for a young team that will have some growing pains as the talented bantams from last year grow into the high school game. Win over Fergus Falls keeps them ahead for now.
7. Fergus Falls (1-5)
A sad sad sad start for a team that most had in their Top 20 to start the year. Injuries, walkoffs, and suspensions have crushed this team during their early schedule. Have been getting scored on in waves so far this season. Hopefully getting their top couple guys back in the near future will help them get back on track.

Fergus will be without Nathe and Kampsula for the remainder of the season. Nathe's offseason troubles caught up with him once again and he has been kicked off of the team. And Kampsula has quit the team. Also with Mann out with an injury the team has been forced to move Johnson back to D, leaving them very thin upfront. Very unfortunate for the Otters after having so much hype coming into the season.

Does anyone know if they are expecting a big crowd for Saturdays game between Apollo and Cathedral? Will the be selling tickets before Saturday?
I just don't want to drive up and not be able to get in.

I expect a pretty full rink. I do not think you should have to buy tickets beforehand however. These teams usually fill up the rink pretty well. Obviously the section championship left the MAC overflowing, but I do not expect the same turn out for this game.

Updated Rankings:

1) St. Cloud Apollo (4-1-0) - What a weekend for the Eagles as they pick up a 4-3 OT win over Sartell, and 4-1 win over Cathedral. They have certainly now cemented themselves as the best team in this section. Lucia and Breidenbach are leading the way up front with 10 points a piece and Althaus' numbers have been improving game by game.

2) Cathedral (5-3-0) - The Crusaders couldn't finish out the game Saturday vs Apollo, despite leading late in the 3rd. It will be hard for these guys to pass up Apollo now at any point throughout this season. Cathedral can certainly score, Neu and VanHalbeck with 14 points, but they'll need to settle in on a goaltender at some point as they continue to rotate 3.

3) Sartell (5-2-0) - This is where things got tricky. Sartell played a tighter game with Apollo than Cathedral did, however I put them behind Cathedral because I believe Cathedral has got the better goaltender. They have a good forward in Lund, and defenseman in Meier, but the depth will need to show up consistently in order for them to rise in the rankings.

4) Little Falls (6-2-0) - The Flyers have surprised to start off this season. They've beat the teams their supposed to pretty handily, and knocked off Alexandria and Fergus Falls. Should be interesting to see these guys come around as the season moves along.

5) Tech (4-2-0) - The Tigers youth has helped propel this team into relevancy this season. Lunderby and Portz lead the team in goals with 5, but some of the veterans need to pick up the slack if this team hopes to make some noise come playoffs. They've already picked up 2 section loses to Sartell and Cathedral, it'll be difficult for them to get any higher than 4th.

6) Alexandria (2-2-0) - The Cardinals played a tough game against Apollo earlier in the week but still came up short. Their goaltending situation is not the best, and it will certainly need to improve. As the season moves along look for the Cardinals youngsters to adapt to the high school game. These guys could pull an upset or two in the playoffs

7) River Lakes (2-4-0) - After a slow start to the season the Stars have picked up 2 wins in a row, including a 6-1 victory over Fergus Falls. If this team can start to put some more pucks in the net and back up their goaltending they can rise in these rankings before the season is over.

8) Fergus Falls (1-6-0) - What a fall from grace for the Otters. Less than a month ago many people had them being a top 3 seed, and some even had them winning this section. Now with the departure/suspension of some of their top players the Otters find themselves in the position to be stuck in a play in game.

9) Prairie Center (1-6-0) - Goals have been tough to come by so far this season for the North Stars, as they've been shutout 4 times already this season. However they did play River Lakes close, in a 5-3 loss.

10) Wadena (3-3-0) - Only one section win over Breckenridge so far this year for the Wolverines. They take on Prairie Center in 2 weeks, and a win there would move them up at least one spot.

11) Breckenridge (4-3-0) - The Blades are 0-1 in section games this season and will have a very difficult time moving up in the rankings the rest of the way.

I do agree with your rankings and agree Cathedral>Sartell at this point due to the goaltending... but I am just curious who the goalie is for Cathedral right now and if you know who it will be going forward.. I know they have been rotating lately

Statistically Levinski has been the best, however Karki has the best potential. The knock on Karki however is that once you get one on him he's done. They've turned to Karki when they pull their other goalie though so he seems like the favorite.

What about the injuries for teams? I noticed Spethmann and Courrier were out for Cathedral, how much of a difference will it make having them healthy?

Both key players that will have a large impact whenever they do return.. Sartell is also missing 4 year starting defenseman (Chisholm) which could have helped them out against Apollo as well. Seems like a three team race right now with Apollo out in the lead
