Section 6AA
Who has the better chance to upset Edina, Benilde or Wayzata? Will Cretin Durham Hall be competitive, or Hopkins for that matter? At least Edina will have some competition at Mariucci this year. Was not cool walking in last year 5 min into game one and it was already 3-0.

If I were to guess I would say Wayzata has a better chance. They have all the highly acclaimed players, they just have to figure some stuff out.TheHockeyDJ wrote:Who has the better chance to upset Edina, Benilde or Wayzata? Benilde still has some solid players like Gleekel, Mayer and Risteau plus they return Bischel in net, but they lost a lot of production from their seniors.
Holy Family will probably be up there with these teams, I imagine CDH and Hopkins to be a step below. Edina I would imagine is still the favorite.
To touch on the game from last year, Burnsville had a few bad games last year, and the section championship was one of them. They were not a great team, but they weren't bad. Heck, they were 1-0-1 against the new competition that Edina will have this year in BSM and Wayzata.
To be honest, they were probably a better team than Wayzata too. Not talent wise, but playing together as a team. I mean, Edina blew out Wayzata twice last year, including an 8-0 win in Plymouth.
No team benefits more from the wider ice surface than Edina, and when you play a team whose best player is the goaltender and he has an off night, then the score can look the way it did.
BSM and Edina should both rank higher than Wayzata going into preseason, and approximately even with each other.. Both in top 10 , Wayzata probably not. (Although they did upset EP at the July tournament)
BSM should be capable of an upset in the Sections, Green 4 listed the main names. But at at this point I would take Edina as the Section champs.
Edinas got returning senior Dornbach plus the Fab4 99's underclassmen Copeland, Sheerer, Phillips, Walker. I believe all were in top 25 or top 50 National Bantam ratings a couple years ago. Phillips will be among the best Dmen in the state this season as a (old) sophomore; could be the last season we see Phillips in a Hornet uniform.
Green4, do you think Edinas starting goalie has been settled? Will Tabor play varsity this year? Is Pugh back, or has he retired after his concussion?
Holy Family lost a lot of talent, and will take a couple years to rebuild to contender status. Edina will blow them out as usual in the Turkey Trot. They did well at the July Eagan tournament, but Will Garin played in that one, and he will be leaving for USHL.

I don't watch any of the bantam games really and I am now far enough removed from high school that I don't know any of the players anymore, so I can't really answer the goalie question. From what I heard, the JV goaltenders were nothing special, so unless the Bantam goalie was spectacular, I would imagine something similar to Boe.WestMetro wrote:BSM and Edina should both rank higher than Wayzata going into preseason, and approximately even with each other.. I would imagine Tabor will play varsity from all the good things I have heard and the fact that the D graduated a large portion of the group. Of the Bantams I would think that are guaranteed to make it would be Brinkman, Crosby and Tabor.
Pugh will be back.
The D looks really young but I think it could be really good.
I imagine it as Phillips, Pugh, Johnson, Jack Foley, Brinkman and Tabor

This section is interesting in that there are two teams that should be at least capable of taking down Edina, who is the clear favorite in spite of all they're losing. (Do we have confirmation that Wait is leaving? EO's list has him as for sure gone, but there was still some uncertainty last I'd heard. Either way, they're the favorite.)
Wayzata's struggles down the stretch last season were pretty well-documented, as a preseason favorite stumbled toward .500. But it's worth noting that Benilde has been fairly underwhelming the past two years, too; I had them in the preseason top 5 both years, and they weren't remotely close to that by the end of either season. Even the year before, when they had a loaded team with Besse and friends as seniors, they lost more than I thought they should. Where there's smoke...
Long story short: at least two teams here have the talent to pull off the win over Edina, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I forgot about Mickleson. I would probably swap him in for Foley. Hankinson, if we are talking about the one who will be a senior, I expect to play JGA or perhaps he could move to forward. Maybe I am wrong, but I think there is too much depth at D.BP wrote:green4 wrote:I don't watch any of the bantam games really and I am now far enough removed from high school that I don't know any of the players anymore, so I can't really answer the goalie question. HF is not in this section anymore. They got moved to Section 2
They did very well in the Eagan tournament.
Beat Prior Lake 5-1
Lost to Lakeville North 2-1
Beat Eastview 4-1
Beat Lakeville North 5-3
Lost to Duluth East 3-1 in Champ Game.
HF does have quite a bit of very good players coming back and some new good ones.
BREAKING NEWS: Garin will be back in the Fire uniform this year! He turned down the USHL last week. Westmetro sorry to break the info to you. I know you were very convinced he was gone. You just got bad info all along!

Don't forget about Prior Lake. They will be dangerous as well. Those 4 teams will have some great Semi-Final Section games.
Fire will have more depth at all positions then any year since they moved to AA. They might not have all the top end talent but they will have 3 solid lines, good top 4 D and two very good goalies who still need to prove themselves. They both (Stauber and Moe) I saw were outstanding at the Eagan Tournament.

Yes I was impressed with the Fire at Eagan , saw the last period of theIr Lakeville north win and then final game against Duluth East. The East game could've gone the other way, since the fire hit the pipe a number of times. Anyway, I chalked up their success to Will Garins presence and figured they'd be losing him. On the other hand, I don't believe Matt Anderson played in that tournament?
I agree about prior Lake also being a force in section 2, but have heard some rumors about some yet to be announced outmigration, anyone got firm info?

Also forgotten was Johnson - who played about half the season last year at Varsity, when Foley was sent back to JV. I don't know how good he was, but I would think he's in the mix. There will be a couple good D-men that end up at JGA.green4 wrote: I forgot about Mickleson. I would probably swap him in for Foley. The two goalies at JGA last year that Giles inexplicably cut are both better than the two JV goalies according to people that know these things. Not sure about the bantams.
Pugh is back for sure, he's skating on the U18 Blades this fall:

I imagine the defense on Edina being:
Phillips
Pugh
Hankinson
Johnson
Brinkman
Foley
I think Wayzata has the firepower up front to beat Edina. Edina's defensive core is skilled but they lack the size and experience to hang with their hard-forcheking crew. They also have a weak goalie situation, so I'd bet on Wayzata over Edina.
P.S. I'm new to this forum: so full disclosure, I'm in my upper 40's, I'm originally from the east coast, and moved to Edina a few years ago. I'm just a big hockey fan who enjoys watching high school hockey here, especially the Edina teams

Tabor? Michaelson? Could be tough for the seniors on the list, especially Hankinson, who's never really gotten any shot at varsity. Foley, on the other hand played 10-15 games last year.sooyou wrote:Pugh is back for sure, he's skating on the U18 Blades this fall:

I had a starting D group very similar to yours, but someone reminded me that I forgot about Mickleson. He made the team last year before being sent to JV because of transfer rules. I have never seen him play, but I have heard he is skilled. It's probably one of the first times someone has actually followed the transfer rules, so if he did not make the team that would be a shock.
It will be a tough decision process for Giles this year on the defensive side it seems.
I saw him play a game for the JV and he was very good. I would not be surprised to see Mac Hankinson on Jr Gold this season.green4 wrote:It's always nice to have another Edina fan on here. There are not many of us.sooyou wrote:Pugh is back for sure, he's skating on the U18 Blades this fall:

I have no idea if he is still there, but I don't think he has caused drama with Giles or Edina. Probably the exact opposite. He quietly took his place on jv and played by the rules so there was no possibility that Edina would be ineligible.Nuts&Bolts wrote:Is it confirmed Mickelson will be back? Two years in a row at the same program doesn't fit the pattern. I'd think he'd be moved to forward or will be gone since Giles doesn't stand for drama.
Giles does not stand for drama and that is why some kids will get cut. But I dont think this kid has caused the drama.
phillps, mickelson, johnson are the three best D. after that ?. both johnson and mickelson are very good fowards. As a freshman at spa mickelson led all 97s in the state in points. best plus minus. team mvp all conference as a forward. Johnson didnt get alot of playing time because they played 4 most of the time. I think he was better than at least 2 of there starting 4. It doesnt matter what we think only what the coach thinks
Thanks Dad.Whopper2 wrote:phillps, mickelson, johnson are the three best D. after that ?. both johnson and mickelson are very good fowards. Major stretch to say he was better than two of the top 4 D, since he rarely played. I would put Brinkman in the top 4 - maybe ahead of Johnson and Mickelson. The addition of Tabor, Pugh, Brinkman and Mickelson will make it hard for the JV D men to get on the team. Phillips has also played forward prior to last year.Whopper2 wrote:phillps, mickelson, johnson are the three best D. after that ?. both johnson and mickelson are very good fowards.
