Just west of Duluth sits the hockey hotbed of Hermantown. Hermantown has a population of just over 9,000. It is quickly becoming the next big producer of great players from the 218 area code. Over the past 10 years the Hawks high school team has advanced to state eight times and produced several Division I players and '13 Hobey Baker winner Drew LeBlanc.

Ninth grader Tyler Watkins looks to be one of the next great Hermantown skaters. A finalist for the Wiz Wyatt Player of the Year award in 2013, Watkins has continued to get better and make a name for himself each time he takes the ice. Last Summer while playing in the Bantam Elite League he lead the prestigious league in points and was named the League MVP.

This year as a second year player, Watkins tallied 32 Goals and 41 Assists in 44 for games for the Hawks. A comment we often heard about Watkins this year was, "man, that 18 can really fly...if you stop him, you stop Hermantown." Hermantown coach Patrick Andrews was quite effusive when talking about Watkins and his future. "Tyler is a special player and even a better person. All you can ask for as a coach is to be lucky enough to coach a kid like Tyler once in your coaching career. The sky is the limit for him in hockey and in life."

Congrats Tyler and Hermantown.
But the article is crediting that association for "producing" great hockey talent (which it undoubtedly does) - a statement that seems to conflict with the above mention that he's from Colorado?
Regardless, now I have to go find the entire list.

He's been there since PeeWees, but obviously the talent was there when he got there. It was one of the main reasons they moved to MN.

4 years in Hermantown youth program, 4 years in Pat Andrew's summer program that runs from pewees through high school and opportunity to play on U16 and U18 wings team if he doesn't play in the Elite league in HS. In addition, if you want to skate in Hermantown there is almost always something going on. So you're saying that people pick where they live and will end up going to high school before 9th grade...interesting.

I would call it one thing: "a fluke"

I mean you have to have one heck of a program to get to the championship game that many times in a row. And I wouldn't even call it an un-ability to win big/close games: they have had a few classic games in the semis that they pulled out.

It's been a great run by the Hawks: just over-looked a bit when they havent been able to close it out.

Yes it was but the Hermantown boys sure put their nose to the grindstone and went for it!!! Both teams suffered at the expensive of breck and st Thomas academy. These two dominated in every way for like a six or seven year span.

Tired excuses.... Looking for someone to blame... Last two losses at State were to EGF, a public school with a smaller enrollment than Hermantown and barring a miraculous finish this year both of those were in convincing fashion...

EGF played two one goal games in sections and faced tough competition to get to the finals. Hermy hadn't given up a goal in the post season. Guess which team didn't panic when under pressure?

Now I know you can't choose your opposition in the post season, but in the end the best talent and coach won....

The Hermantown Hawks have dominated since 2006-2007.

After the last state tourney and having my heart ripped out by hermantown a loss in the championship game! I finally have recovered from that loss. What I need is someone to give me positive reasons to think they can win the whole thing next year!
