Question as to "Number of Varsity Years Allowed"

Post by jg2112 »

Hello all:

A parent I regularly speak to at the rinks tells me there is a 5-year limit on girls playing varsity hockey.

Is this true? I know McMillen at the U lettered 6 years and there are a fair number of 7th graders playing varsity hockey this year.

I don't bring this up to argue the merits of 7th graders on varsity. I am just wondering as I see nothing in the MSHSL bylaws other than that kids are eligible for high school sports from 7th to 12th grade.

Thanks in advance.

MSHSL Handbook:

BYLAW 109.00 SEASONS OF PARTICIPATION
Cross Reference: Bylaw 101 (Age), Bylaw 110 (Semesters Enrolled), Board Policy 109
and Bylaw 208 (Definition #8) Effective with the 7th grade class of 2011-2012.
1. Students may not participate in more than one interscholastic season in a given sport in each school year or more than six seasons in any sport while enrolled in grades 7 to 12.
2. Participation, no matter how limited, will count as one season of participation.

Exactly. That's the bylaw I saw as well. I am baffled as to why this parent keeps telling me they only "get 5 on the varsity."

Also, there is a 12 consecutive semester rule for eligibility starting the first day a student attends
7th grade.
