Hard to put a pretty spin on that one. Congrats to Rapids. Hard to beat a decent team 11 times in a row.
East's defense was a mess in the first period, and while they actually played alright in the 2nd and 3rd periods and wound up with a decent edge in SOG, the damage was done. I enjoyed the goalie pull 3 down with 3 minutes left.
East is really lacking that top-end player who can put a team on his shoulders and rescue them, as they've had over the past couple years in Moore and Beaulieu. They had plenty of chances to make this a lot more interesting, but couldn't cash in. They need someone--Altmann or Dow, probably--to step up and carry the load. If they get that and figure out how to actually get to their system in the 1st period, they'll have a shot. It won't be easy, but stranger things have happened. They still have quite a few games left, with the next two against top ten teams--they need to figure it out in a hurry, or things will snowball.
I get the sense this Rapids team runs a lot off of emotion--either they're way up or way down. It's a dangerous way to do things, but if they peak at the right time, who knows. Very curious to see how they do against surging Cloquet next week.

I would not be so sure. Given that ER played them on day three of a three day stretch where they played Edina and Eden Prairie the two previous days and ER needed an All Star Wrestling move in the form of a head lock to score that last goal I figure I would not take that bet. 50/50 at best.northwoods oldtimer wrote:100%Slammer wrote:3-0 Rapids.
Elk River- 99.9 percent chance of going to state
Rapids goes to state from 7AA
It was about time. Grand Rapids beats Duluth East for the first time since 2007.

What's your point? Elk River also played Edina and EP the previous two days. On top of that, ER had a game the Tuesday before that. That was the Elks' busiest part of the schedule for the season. So, if anything, ER was more exhausted than GR.Mouse in the corner wrote:I would not be so sure. I'd say, at this point, the only thing that could knock ER off the #1 seed would maybe be an overwhelming win by DE when they match up at the end of this month.

No, whats more amusing is that a comment meant to provide support for my team focus vs individual accolades on a website got twisted and turned around like it did. Full team effort last night. Nice to see. Will they go to State? Who knows. All I know is they dont have to go through Hermantown to do it, thankfully.northwoods oldtimer wrote:Rapids has the most bipolar fan base. Tuesday night they blamed the web site guy, the bantams and the coaching on the seasons funk. Today they are going to state. Worth a good laugh.![]()

I'm hoping Bemidji also gets there! Karl had it on his blog, and I agree that there would be an exciting energy in St. Paul around the Jacks making it.elliott70 wrote:Nice job THawks.
Gives hope to keeping section 7 crown in the North.
Duluth may end up 4 pr 5 cede.
As for 7AA seeds, Rapids needs to take care of business now at home vs CEC and they should get the 2 seed. If East loses to Elk River and Cloquet the 2nd time, then I'd give Cloquet the 3 and East the 4. East also plays Forest Lake and I wouldn't be shocked now to see Forest Lake give them a hell of a fight.
