I would agree it is their biggest question mark. IMO its the cardinals biggest question mark. Could be excellent or could be inconsistent. Thats what happens when you lose a 4 year starter in the pipes.

I dont know if many in Luverne are comparing themselves to the "rest of the section." The common goal of the Cardinal hockey program is to contend at the state level. Step one was taken last year. Many more steps remain.MrGoalieBoy wrote:I would agree it is their biggest question mark. There are some potential big announcements coming from Cardinal Nation that may emphasize this "trending upward" movement. Brace yourselves, It's happening.

Boy it will be awful tough to crack Section 3A hockey scouts top 7 this year for Section 3A.Whiner33 wrote:NOTtonight what are your thoughts on the top teams in the section for 2014-2015 season?
I think if the CARDS get some goaltending they should be in the top eight aren't they? Or you thinking 3a trout might scare you off?
Thoughts??
Im thinking Windom, Marshall, New Ulm, Litchfield, Hutchinson, Willmar, and Morris Benson will be locked in ahead of the Cards according to scout. The most difficult call he will make, will be if Fairmont, Redwood, or Worthington have made the jump to surpass Luverne.
His reasons will be in line with this...
Windom - Sleeper team, lots of returning points, and a great coaching staff. Tough to beat at home.
Marshall - New facility on the way, the new blood coaching will revitalize the program. Missing the state tournament last year was a fluke, Campion will be impossible to beat in the pipes.
New Ulm - Oh boy here we go, Returning favorites, Section final appearance last year, clearly the best team all year in the section last season, and the coaches. How great are these coaches in New Ulm??
Litchfield - This program has excellent location. This location gets them a schedule vastly superior to the other areas of the section. This will have them playoff ready.
Hutchinson - Dont you guys know what this junior class did as bantams? These guys are the most talented squad in the whole friggin nation. Im surprised shattuck didnt take them as a group prior to last year.
Willmar - If coach T was returning these guys would be in line for the 2015 Stanley cup. That coach rocked, they had a good playoff run, and are really really motivated to perform well. Also, Geography will get them a schedule that will make them unstoppable in the playoffs.
Morris Benson - Hottest team in the state to end the regular season last year. These guys have a good returning goalie, and passion.
Best of the Rest
Luverne - Their coach sucks. Over Hyped. Arrogant fan base.
Worthington - Nowhere to go but up, play gritty
Redwood - Their defense will be great after getting plenty of work over the previous season.
Fairmont - Great facility, Played tough games against section opponents last year, highest potential to move past the "best of the rest"
You guys think we hear this in the next few months? Have to right?

Only thing I 100% agree on you with. Last year they had too much talent for even their poor coaching staff to mess up in 3A. They were a great representative for our Section at the State Tourney. First team from 3A to really compete.notTONIGHT wrote:Luverne - Their coach sucks. Over Hyped. Arrogant fan base.
However, next year... OverHyped (100 % AGREE)
Who stops the puck now the Meyer (Section 3A Player of the Year) is gone. How do you replace the production of Olson (State All Tournament Team) & Norman.
The thing you loved about Luverne last year is they had two GREAT Lines... This year not so much and they had a STUD in the nets.. Big Question Mark there a well.
Arrogant Fan Base .... Not even a Question Just read the Thread people love it when I troll the ROLL CARDS ROLL BANDWAGON!
Last year your boys were great and had a great season and you should be proud of them. They went to State and for once Our Section got great PR. Hopefully others will benefit from that. With that Said that WAS LAST YEAR!!
Next Year is all new:
Power Rankings for 3A Summer 2014 Version
1. New Ulm: Only graduated 2 players... However, Davis was their heart soul and Kraus was a 3 year Starter in the Nets. Still New Ulm is loaded with Senior Talent next season!
2. Hutch: Bring back Senior Studs Cowger & Macemon along with a GREAT Junior Class.... Need to find a goalie. Heard the Head Coaches Nephew will fill the role from locals. He could be the X Factor.
3. Luverne: Bring Back the Dynmaic Duo (Smedsrud & Nelson) Also have the Senior Stud Sengvongxay on the Blue Line. Their Bantams won District 4/5 whoich is mostly 3A Teams. Still have to replace some very good seniors but they will be tough just not as tough as last year.
4. Willmar: Lost 12 Seniors and their Coach. They have the best Goalie of the top 5 coming back. Riever payed alot as Sophomore. They also return one of their most dymnamic forwards and some solid dmen. Will be tough just not as deep as before.
5. LDC: These guys bring back some very good players. They return their top line and most of their Dcore their A Bantams finished 2nd in District 4/5 so young talent is coming. Like many in this Section will need to replace a great goaltender in Wahl.
6. Morris Benson: Made a nice run at the end of last year. Bring back a good portion of that team. They will be tough. Should move up a few spots.
7. Marshall: Lost Campion and some very good seniors. I think this will be an interesting bunch to watch. Lack skill but will get good coaching. I know they will be a strong by the end of the year. Heard their Bantam Goalie moving up is a game changer in the nets.
8. Redwood Valley: Will bring back most of their team this year. They should be much better this year. They have a new coach and many of their top payers were underclassman last year.
9. Windom: Still have some nice pieces just lack the overall depth to contend they seem to be trending downward as a program right now.
10. Fairmont: Still lack talent but they have a good 3 year starter in Cunning in the Nets.
11. Worthington: Will struggle to field a team on a nightly bases....
Section 3A Should be fun again to Watch.
Goaltending: Key question for many in the section....
Also watch LDC, Morris/Benson & Redwood this year they were young last year and took their lumps should be fun to see how much they have improved this year.

Eagan's Mike Taylor and Luverne's Derrick Brown have been named the state coaches of the year.

3AScout, for you to say that Luverne coaches are terrible, is absolutely asinine. Do you not realize Luverne has had 3, 20+ Win seasons in a row? Yeah they had one bad game against Marshall in the semi-finals. And this year we saw that with Meyer this past year, Luverne was a class A top 5 or 6 team. Kudos to Their coaching staff.

Congratulations to Luverne's Chaz Smedsrud and Toby Sengvongxay on being named to the Fall Elite League. Having two kids in from Section 3A is good to see. Not sure if we have ever had a kid from Section 3A make the Big League before??
Sounds like according to another thread the Phenom Jaxon Nelson maybe getting some consideration for the LEAGUE as well.
Too bad Senior's From Hutch Cowger or NU Peterson didnt get a spot. I know neither play football in the fall would of been great to see even more 3A Kids get a spot.
Should be a very interesting year in Section 3A .....
Can't wait for another great year!!

Remember you saying that as being Cowger... You should be embarrassed with that pick...
Wonder how many times the cards will be trapped again this year... 0/22 for you last year!
Better luck this year my friend...

Can somebody provide us with a synopsis of the players that will contribute to the teams in contention?
After that, can we get a brief bio of some of the major contributors to the thread? Where did they go to high school, did they play, where do they live now, do they have kids on a team? The wind has switched a little - Luverne is no longer the underdog that has fallen just short; they had a shot last year, and are heavy favorites this year. Some of the posts from Cards faithful that came off as loyally defending their team last year, now sound a little like a bully shoving the defeated foes' noses in it.
I find this thread periodically intriguing, but have a hard time following the characters - kind of like coming in half way through the 2nd season of Game of Thrones, but with that you can look in the back of the book for help in understanding the relationships.

a defenseman from new ulm played in the Elite league about 5 or 6 years ago, a second from NU almost made it the same year. as good as they were i think the luverne kids are better. new ulms coaching has been good, luvernes is just as good. not to say that they dont lose games they shouldnt from time to time

Wow Huge Update here. He was on the Elite League Roster so I assumed he was staying home.Whiner33 wrote:3a scout any news on Big Sexy? Heard he may be on the move to NA?
What a big blow that would be for the Cards...
Any updates?
If this is true the Cards are DONE... Would be devastating loss for their program.
Hutch and New Ulm are now the clear cut front runners for Section 3A

What some bad advice from some joker!
I guess he thinks there will never be another opportunity out there. Don't jump out of the rink at your first offer!

Luverne had the "Big Three" this year going into the season. If Sengvongxay, Smedsrud or Nelson were to be leaving early I am sorry yes Luverne would not be a contender this year. Still better then most in 3A but more middle of the pack not a contender.the thrill wrote:Well if that's true that one of the 3 Elite Roster kids are leaving this year, that definitely put a damper on the Cards hopes of returning to state in 2015. I have to assume that "Big Sexy" is Smedsrud? Can anyone confirm or deny this rumor?
Those 3 are very good but if you take one away it really make Luverne average in a hurry.
If this rumor is true it would really shake things up in 3A!!

Take it easy Dude. One good regular season in Section 3A does not get you the title, "Roseau South." We can revisit in about 50 years.notTONIGHT wrote:Down in "Roseau South" big sexy is a nickname for sengvongxay. If the rumor is still being floated, i can squash it. Nobody is leaving the team.the thrill wrote:Nelson made the Bantam Elite.
And it was Whiner33 that mentioned that he heard "Big Sexy" may be headed to the "NA".

Hell, I've been in and around hockey for 30+ years, this is the first year I even remember Luverne being relevant.
Enjoy the season Luverne, great talent down there. But let's not make this out to be a historic run.
Sorry, fresh out, Don't Really Give Any.
