Great Day of Hockey in Gustavus Always one of my favorite days of the years. As has been said numerous times already on here all 4 teams competed hard and it made for a very entertaining day!
Game #1 Luverne 4 Hutchinson 0
Well my prediction was looking good the first half of the 1st period as Hutchinson came out flying they were all over the Cards. However, they just could not find the back of the net. Meyer for Luverne hats off to him played a very steady game in the nets for the Cards. Luverne was able to counter and score 2 quick goals on Allen and that put the Tigers 2-0 head into to intermission one. I felt that Hutch controlled the play in the first. In the second it was all Luverne. I felt Allen played very well to keep his Tigers in the game. Luverne was really buzzing the net but Allen kept it a 3 goal game with some good timely saves. In the third Hutchinson was on the Power Play for 9 of the final 17 minutes and given a Penalty Shot. They had to convert and they were not able to get anything done. Luverne had a couple rushes and buried the 4th goal which all but ended any hope that Hutchinson had.
Hutchinson really came out playing the body they were extremely physical and it was working for them early however, as soon as Luverne buried those 2 pucks it is tough to play the Game Hutch decided to play while trailing.
Great Effort by Hutch they lose some very quality seniors but will be very tough again next year. Great job by Luverne taking on the challenge this year and being able to move on. They will have to sure some things up before Wednesday but congrats to the Cards…. I eat crow I honestly thought Hutchinson would find a way but they never were able to put all the pieces with all that talent together this year. Disappointing
Game #2 New Ulm 5 Willmar 4 OT
What a classic second game. These teams are dead even if they played again it would go either way. Willmar was ready to go right of the opening draw and went down and buried a puck. New Ulm was dreadful in their Dzone in the 1st period. Willmar was dominate it could of easily been 6 to 0 as Kraus made some outstanding saves after a very shaky start. I saw people leaving after the 1st period because no one thought New Ulm had a shot, except the 20 boys on their bench. Great 2nd period effort came out flying. Played 2 lines and never seemed to tire. They were all over the ice throughout the 2nd period. Finally able to tie it then be assessed 5 minute major. Willmar comes out and buries a puck to start the third but again New Ulm battles back to tie it. They are given a Power Play in the OT with Willmar’s best D #18 in the box the Eagles convert and put an end to a very wild and fun game.
New Ulm is so dangerous up front the speed and and playmakers they have up front is very impressive. Willmar had a great game plan to start and they were completely dominate however it almost seemed like they got up by too much and took their foot of the gas. As soon as New Ulm scored in the Second you could feel the tide changing. Give Willmar credit though they re grouped and were able to retake the lead in the third. But New Ulm would not quit and what a great ending to game.
For Willmar very tough pill to swallow as they now are faced with replacing 12 seniors. They still have Reiver in the Nets, Kobeinia (Top Forward for them last night) and Ackerman on the Blue line returning to build around. All 3 were only Sophomores this year. Still a very tough outcome for Willmar.
Well now we get the game we all have wanted to see the last two years. New Ulm vs. Luverne.
Should be a Dandy!

Section 3A Final Preview: #1 Seed Luverne (26-0-1) vs. #3 Seed New Ulm (17-10-0)
Luverne and New Ulm will play for the 1st time this season since meeting in the Section 3A Final two years ago. Not only will Luverne be playing with the pressure of trying to continue their unbeaten season, but also the chance to earn its first ever berth in the State Tournament. On the other hand New Ulm has been model of success in Section 3A winning 3 of the past 4 titles, there has obviously been some big up’s and down’s about this edition of New Ulm. The concerns at the blue line remain, and it will be interesting to see how the each team performs during what’s sure to be a fast paced, exciting game.
Players to watch: For Luverne their senior duo of Logan Norman (1-4-5 pts.) and Gunnar Olson (4-2-6 pts.) has been very strong so far for the Cardinals. They have gotten good production out of their young dynamic duo in Super Sophomore Chaz Smedsrud (3-4-7pts.) and 8th grade Phenom Jaxon Nelson (2-3-5pts.) offensively in the playoffs. Defensively Toby Sengvongxay has been a stud on the Blueline compiling (1-4-5 pts.) so far. They have been Anchored in the nets by Senior Kendall Meyer (2-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .951 SV%).
New Ulm has been led by their stand out top line of Speedy Junior Wyatt Peterson (2-5-7 pts.), Do it all Senior Judd Davis (4-2-6 pts.) and Big Strong Junior Brandon Helget (2-2 4pts.). They have a very solid second line and have not used their 3rd line much at all. Defensively they have been shaky times but have gotten good minutes out of under rated Junior Alex Stark. They have battle Tested Brach Kraus (2-0-0, 3.39 GAA, 885 SV %) in the nets who has already led his team to the State Tournament when he was a Sophomore.
By the numbers: New Ulm is 5-0-0 in lifetime in contests between these two teams, including a 2-1 victory in the Section 3A final two years ago … Luverne has played every 3A Opponent this season but New Ulm… The Eagles return four players from the team two year’s ago, which won the 2012 Section 3A Title… Luverne returns seven players from the team two year’s ago. Senior goaltenders Kendall Meyer and Brach Kraus both have plenty playoff experience combining to appear in 17 Section 3A Playoff Games… The Luverne Dynmaic Duo an 8th Grader and Sophomore have burst onto the scene this season, combing to score 154 points this season. New Ulm’s first line has combined for 127 pts this season while their second line has combined for 98 pts..... Luverne school enrollment 330 New Ulm combined enrollment 1,269.

Setterholm nailed it in the paper, All the pressure is on Luverne, and None on New Ulm. That has the potential to be an enourmous factor.
Luverne really could not of played much worse on saturday. Fumbling the puck all over, and overall not very crisp. The demons at Gustavus were exorcised though.
I expect Luverne to really expose the blue line of New Ulm, and pepper Krause. Is he up for it? He was when they played Hutch.
I see the potential for Luverne to give up a few odd man rushes in this game. Lots of D-zone time for NUSE, which could present the opportunity for a bounce and chance at a rush. If Peterson and company can capitalize we could have a game!
Also, I hope we dont see this officiating crew again

I was impressed, this thread went 13 hours without a post!
6-2 Luverne. I don't like picking the Cardinals but the numbers prove them out and after last year's letdown, they won't go lightly into this game. Luverne makes it to St Paul, but as an unseeded team. Thank God St Thomas Academy has moved to AA!

Boy now that 3A is down to the final two combatants nervousness must be really setting in on both sides. The 3A banter has come to a very slow crawl. Where has all the chirping gone fellas. Tough to chirp when you can't even get enough saliva to spit. Good luck to both teams, but I'm going to throw my support to the Cards.

I am still a little sore that Hutch lost when they had a very talented group. Not really a huge fan of either of these programs that are left. Both have too much arrogance but I am hoping whoever wins will represent 3A well.
New Ulm I think has the advantage that they have won this game before, 3 of the pas 4 years. I think that gives them the edge. i think they are very even this year. Also, there will be a ton of PRESSURE on the Cards.
I thought Luverne was sloppy on Saturday Hutch just could not bury chances for the life of them.
I will go New Ulm 4 Luverne 2.
The Eagles return to the X for the 4th year in the last 5 chances.
One thing I am excited for judging by the crowds these two teams brought on Saturday get to Gustavus early seats could be hard to come by!

And the Cardinals have handled that pressure pretty well all year, I think everyone would agree. Like you said, 2 people returned from New Ulm's last section final compared to Luverne's 7? I think Luverne has more of an edge, especially with Meyer in net.Section 3A HockeyScout wrote:I am still a little sore that Hutch lost when they had a very talented group. So you are going to hate on these kids who battle and work so hard when you are a "scout" because they each have a couple arrogant fans on a message board. You need a PP slap my friend.... Some would call you an arrogant Hutch fan. Grow up.Section 3A HockeyScout wrote:I am still a little sore that Hutch lost when they had a very talented group. Keep in mind not ALL of the Luverne faithful have time (or the desire) to sit around and "Chirp" this time of year. Many are lugging kids around to practice, games, YES even school once in a while!Tigers95 wrote:Boy now that 3A is down to the final two combatants nervousness must be really setting in on both sides. Just in case nobody noticed, BOTH Luverne's PWA and BantamA teams have qualified for their Regional Tourney's so it's a pretty busy time of the year.
Roll Cards!

Well, I guess we should get ready to celebrate the Islanders Stanley Cup Victory this year! Since they won the Cup in 1980, 81, 82, and 83 I think that gives them the edge.
