I'm just Nuts fastncrash but ain't tracking. It's OK though as this thread is to complicated for me. Good luck to whoever makes it to St. Paul. That's when I'll check back in I guess. BTW will section 3A will be able to have more than 1 or 2 kids per level make a "selects" or the Ted Brill team this year? The past several years seems to have been section 3AA versus the other A & AA sections combined. I suppose those 3A kids focus on baseball when spring comes as there's gotta be a reason for such limited participation in the spring festivals.

Here's what I got out of the game. Yes, Willmar controlled a lot of the second period BECAUSE they were on the Powerplay. Meyer played fantastic. Luverne's forwards buried their chances, could have easily had more. I personally don't think #18 was a beast for Willmar... I think he was a puck hog trying to skate around everyone. Does anyone know if Willmar's starting goalie is a lot better than the one who played last night? I hope these two get matched up again at Gustavus! Easily the two best teams in the section IMO.

Greetings Section 3A Followers,
Well another Week has come and gone and we have sort of jumbled mess at the bottom of our rankings.
Section 3A Rankings (1-12-14)
1. Luverne (16-0-1)
2. New Ulm Area (7-7-0)
3. Willmar (6-7-0)
4. Hutchinson (6-4-1)
5. LDC (5-6-0)
6. Marshall (4-8-0)
7. Windom (6-10-0)
8. Fairmont (2-9-0)
9. Worthington (2-9-0)
10. Morris Benson (1-11-0)
11. Redwood Valley (2-7-0)
Luverne- Right now this team just keeps winning and taking care of their business. It is too bad that New Ulm refuses to play them I think that would be a great game and help sort out a potential mess. Luverne has some really nice talent and is building a good program in SW Minnesota. Still has a big date with Hutch left yet…
New Ulm Area- Taking Lourdes to OT and playing with Blake for awhile shows this team has great potential. They are quietly going about there business and getting by the day. They have a found some depth with that great first line. IF They beat Willmar they have an argument at the #1 Seed…. IF they played Luverne would make it a better argument BUT THAT’S ON THEM FOR REFUSING THE GAME!
Willmar- Is a very scary team that can take anyone out on any night. They play a different brand then most in this section. They are built for playoff success. They are very well coached by the best Coach in Section 3A. He will have them ready come playoff time. Need to get Gooseman Healthy in a HURRY! Have a big date left with NU in their Barn.
Hutchinson- Team is loaded with talent. They have what many would consider the deepest line-up in Section 3A. However, The Goaltending Situation is plaguing these guys. They need to figure out a Starter and go from there. They have Lost to New Ulm and Willmar. Still have a MUST WIN game left with Luverne in their Barn!
LDC- Tragic news up in Litch for their coach and his family. I have a soft spot for this team now as they are playing for him. These guys are getting A LOT BETTER. They are young but week by week they are learning to compete. With Wahl in the Nets they are going to be a dangerous team down the stretch. Still get 2 shots at NU, One with Willmar and One with Hutch left.
Marshall- A head scratcher with Worthington. However, don’t count out Marshall Mr. Campion is still good to steal a game here. Needs help and someone who can score. Not much depth but they do play hard and will not be an easy foe for whoever draws them in the playoffs.
Windom- Just a TERRIBLE loss at home to Morris Benson. However they cant sulk they have a big matchup with Marshall at home on Monday. If they could knock off Marshall would help them get back in the discussion maybe…. Really under-achieved this season.
Fairmont- Moves up with a big win over Worthington. Own a victory over Morris Benson as well. All 4 of the bottom teams are playing for a home playoff game in the Play-In Round which is a big start when trying to build a program.
Worthington- Not a good loss to Fairmont…. Played Marshall to the wire but then fell apart as the week went on. However, these guys can not be taken lightly they will play very hard. Their Line of Newman, Johnson & Kremer is solid and can score to put a scare into teams.
Morris Benson- Move out of the basement of 3A with a big road section win over Windom. Still have a schedule that could allow them to make a move in the bottom of this section.
Redwood Valley- They are getting A LOT Better. I don’t expect them to be here for long just still need to win some Section 3A Games. Still have a schedule that allows them to move as well.
Should be ANOTHER Fun Week in 3A!
Good Luck to ALL

Hey Sec 3 scout,
I would consider "making plays all night for #18" for Willmar, putting up points!! I don't remember him setting anyone up for a quality shot or him taking any himself. The one play I do remember him making is when he stuck his stick in #33's(Luverne) crotch. Unless you are counting "cheap" plays. And Luverne's quality shots were 2-1. Willmar throwing shots from the blue line all night on power plays are not, in my opinion, quality shots, esp. when you don't even have anyone in front of the net. Meyer had about 3 good saves and one was on a penalty shot. Willmar did control the 2nd period, they were on the power play for half of it, and they had more energy because that was their only shot of getting back in the game. Then Luverne scores immediately to start the 3rd. The game was never in doubt the whole 3rd period. So I guess if you think a whole period of watching a game that wasn't in doubt close, then I would question your knowledge.

I thought 18 had a nice game. He was generating things all by himself at times... Some call it a puck hog others see it as an attempt to get things going for a team that looks snake bit offensively.
I did give Luverne credit they played a very solid d-zone much of the shots Willmar had were from the outside. Meyer was able to see the puck clearly all night. He was calm and collected in the net never got rushed or out of sorts.
Once Luverne scored to start the Thirds they did control play I said that in my report. The 2nd was all Willmar though. It was a fun game to watch. As I have said Luverne is fun to watch they have come a long ways as a program.
Good Luck to Both teams as they continue to move forward in the season!
The bottom-line in Section 3A there are 6 teams that have a chance to advance to the X in March. It will come down to who is playing the best hockey for those three days. As Marshall proved last season.
The 6 teams regardless of records are:
Hutchinson very dangerous and talented team goaltending issue only
reason they are struggling at all. Who knows for three games
in late Feb that may change.
LDC with Whal in goal and their Sophomore forwards are improving just look at their scores.
Luverne they have answer the bell every time for every game so far this
season. If Meyer continues to play at the level he has this
season they will be tough to beat.
Marshall with Champion but will need to find a goal scorer.
New Ulm is the team to beat period. They have Kraus in net and they have
goal scorers. Anyone thinking they are not a great team is fooling
themselves.
Willmar they are well coached and play a different brand of hockey as
someone said they are built to do well in playoffs.
Should be a great Section tournament. My above theme is Goaltending and their many good senior goalie in the Section this year. it will be interesting to see which of the goalies take his team on back in late Feb.
Finally, Section 3A supporters it great to support your own team but not at the expensive of putting down other programs. How can we expect our team to be respected in the state if we do not respect each other. There is enough people outside this Section to put our teams down let alone our own people. [/b]

I'll say this, I absolutely dont want to tear down a program, or even more so a player. Im an adult and they are kids. I will say this in regards to the game on saturday, Willmar kind of disappointed me.
I really thought they were going to come down and give luverne a heck of a run. I was expecting 18 to really dazzle me. I also thought the coaching staff was going to have some thing put in place to change the game.
Neither of those things happened.
18 had some nice puck skills, but was so rattled the entire game, he was barely a factor. He spent more time chirping after whistles, and cup checking kids, than taking any pucks to the net.
Also, Willmar's entire game plan was to be physical and stop #8. This was a success for Willmar, but it left the other forwards open to have some great chances and finsh. You can not pick one forward from Luverne and eliminate them, and expect to have success. In fact, i hope Luverne sees this strategy several more times this season. #1 in net for luverne was really never challenged. A few shots from the perimeter while willmar was on the powerplay, but other than that nothing.
With all of that said, if Willmar finds a way to score, they can be dangerous. Very dangerous. I hope they can make a run in the playoffs. This is their year, so I have heard.

Agreed with notTONIGHT. If Willmar finds a way to put the puck away and generate more chances, they will be very tough to beat. I really really hope it comes down to the top four teams...New Ulm, Hutch, Luverne, and Willmar!! That would be one heck of a Saturday at GAC, IMO. How do sections work this year, do the top two teams get byes or what?
That's right!! Redwood Valley is UNdefeated ....notTONIGHT wrote:The score is not an indicator of a game.

Section 3A Action Last Night
New Ulm Area 6 St Peter 0
NU just keeps improving as they dominated the Bulldogs last night to prove the first game was a fluke. NU is getting scoring from their 2nd line now.
Coach Setterholm on his team: Still looking for consistency
"We play really well for one or two periods but we have not put it all together yet," Setterholm said. "We do have a little bit of inexperience. I think that it is one of those things as we progress through the year, we are missing a couple of kids off of last year's team. It always takes a little bit to build everything back up."
The Eagles are still looking at trying to get balanced scoring on his team.
"We have taken steps toward that lately," Setterholm said. "We have not made any line changes - we have kind of let that go as far as our [No.] 1, 2 and 3 lines. We are trying to get that some time to jell."
The top line for New Ulm right now consists of Brandon Helget (12 goals and nine assists), Wyatt Petersen (6-12) and Judd Davis (8-9).
"But our second line has really turned it around and has put the puck in the net as well," Setterholm said of Colin Huffman (5-4), Jon Kopacek (10-6) and Ethan Kraus (4-2).
New Ulm's third line consists of Jonah Cooper, Jared Beltz and Cole Reinarts.
Of those nine players, only Davis and Reinarts are seniors.
"Our third line is more of a gritty, grind-it-out line," Setterholm said. "They grind it out and play physical. We are not asking them to put the puck in the net - we want them to play good defense and do what they can do to give other lines rest during a game. And be a good, hard, forechecking third line."
Delano Pounds LDC 8 to 0
Morris Benson Ties Rival Breckenridge 2 to 2
Mankato East pounds Fairmont 9 tp 3

Willmar could have easily taken this one. Their strategy is to lay in the weeds until Sections. They're hoping Luverne will overlook them, and then they come out flying! Just wait.........fastncrash wrote:The OTHER way to bring attention to the Section is to "READ" all of the seriously misguided comments regarding the section. So this was a pretty important game for Willmar, JMO I guess, but even "Trout" recognized this, well at least before last nights REALITY check. So, with it being an important game, are you suggesting they decided not to take this victory? As in your own words, it was "EASILY" at hand? Uhhh, OK. You get an eye-roll too.

Also, for these liberal , everyone needs a trophy knuckle heads, line 1&2 got two shifts In the third, and only a couple more than that in the second. they were scoring 2 goals a shift. Luverne has to play in the worst conference in the state. Ten conference games, hey Luverne, sit your horses for over a third of your season! Get a clue!!!

I was at this game for the first period and a half. The third and fourth lines for Luverne had their fair share of ice time in the second period while I was there. 16-0 is rough but I'm not sure what is worse, blatantly not scoring or running up the score. These games are not fun for either team or the fans.
