On the radio, possibly. Internet stream, doubt it. The major Marshall radio station that I listen to is 105.1 FM. I'll take a closer look tonight to see what's happening in the booth that is at the top of the standings.
Sounds like it will be available to stream on KARZ which can be found at http://www.marshallradio.net/

Good luck to both teams tonight! Cant wait to see 3A hockey Trout's predicted "statement" to come true tonight.

Luverene vs Marshall

Post by rbmuskiefishin »

Who wins:

Some interesting info: Luverene wins against LSH/SP 6-2 but 4 of the goals are on the power play

Marshall defeats Worthington 8-1 but it is against a team expected to finish below 2 teams Litch beat 10-2 and 11-1

Thus I think if either team is going to be considered at the top of the section they need to make a big statement tonight.

Good Luck!

My prediction Luverene wins a close game 4-3

Good Points. The Final score however, was 6-1, and the officiating was awful. Anyone knows a hockey game can be ruined by officiating and this was a good example. The first half of the game Luverne was in the box for the majority, and the second half St. Peter was in the box. Terrible calls all around. The difference was goaltending and penalty kill, which is a shame when a game is exlusively decided by special teams. Thank the Officiating crew for that result. If St. Peter would have popped a few of their PP opportunities in the first and second period no telling what could of happened. Nothing either St. Peter or Luverne could do about that.

Looks like 3A scout is going to be eating his prediction after this one. That 8th grader and Smedsrud are something special. The really scary thing is that Luverne is missing some key players.

With about 4 minutes left, Luverne led Marshall by 6-0. Goals were scored by Connor Hoffman (2), the 8th grader Jaxon Nelson (2), Chaz Smedsrud, and Toby Sengvongxay. The prettiest goal was #6 as Smedsrud fed Nelson across the front for a nice shot.

I think that Marshall has improved as a team this year, but they still fall behind Luverne in pure talent and team play. And like many low-talent squads, they tend to get chippy and take cheap penalties.

Campion kept the game tight in the first period, giving up only one goal on a 2-on-1 breakaway. But, in the second period, he gave up a cheap penalty and Luverne scored on the PP. After that, the flood gates opened. The fourth goal was Campion's fault as he simply threw a rebound out to Nelson, who returned it back into the upper corner.

Luverne has got some great talent, especially amongst the forwards. The first line is centered by the 8th-grader who brings good height and composure. Smedsrud -last year's top scoring freshman in the state- plays wing on that line and links up well with Nelson.

This Luverne team, I still like, just as I did last season. Hopefully, they can go through the season-end playoffs without choking again.

Well did not expect that much of a lopsided score based on predictions. Lets hope someone eats some crow around here, my guess it doesn't happen.

Marshall better hope that Campion can pull something off come playoff time, otherwise they are not going anywhere. Interesting to see how the rest of their week goes! After the look of this one, it won't go well.

I agree with TEAK. Marshall is a better team than last year. Last year they rode campion through the playoffs. Campion was clearly RATTLED tonight as he earned a misconduct penalty which really opened the gates for Luverne. I'm worried its going to be a long week for the black and orange faithful. Wish them the best of luck!

Luverne did this without very important players. I think everyone should understand Luverne a very real threat this season. They have a good mix of athletes and scoring touch. Along with some hard hitters that can change a game. The team will only improve with the return of a couple studs.

It should be noted that even though tonight was a good win for Luverne. They still havent done anything. The rest of the week will be a good test. Litch on Saturday should be another 3A hockey TROUT game of the week or whatever.

New to this site, but have been following it for the last couple of years. All I have to say is Marshall needs to stop playing their fist two lines all the time. They are dragging at the end of the 1st. Their top two lines are not physical enough. Their 3rd line when they get in are not afraid to put a body on someone.

Well Stated

Luverene posts the first statement of the year.

We will be able to determine how big a statement it is after Marshall plays New Ulm and Hutch this week.

If Luverene is at the level you believe they are Litch will not be much of a challenge....They are improving but not a threat to capture the section

Well I will eat my crow....

Marshall got dominated by a Luverne team still missing their returning leading scorer from last year and a couple D-man who will play good minutes.

Campion kept it close for awhile but Luverne eventually just overwhelmed the Tigers.

Nelson & Smedsrud are scary good for an 8th Grader and Sophomore fun to watch also Norman and Sengvongxay played very well for the Cards and Meyer was solid in the nets.

Marshall will need to get a lot better around Campion to contend still very early.... as notTonght said this could be a long week for the Orange and black.

I think the game showed how down Marshall is and that Luverne has some very young special talents.

See how the rest of the week plays out.

Also Congrats to Worthington as they knock off Redwood Valley 5 to 3 in the other Section 3A battle on the night

Also in 3A Willmar Pounded Rivers Lakes 6 to 2 outshot the 56 to 15.... The Same Rivers Lakes that took care of LDC a week earlier

What am I missing about Marshall being a better team than last year? I'm not quite sure I agree with that. But from what I've seen and heard so far, I think the top four runners in the section will be New Ulm, Hutchinson, Luverne, and Willmar.

We didn't say that Marshall was better than the teams around them, but rather that Marshall is playing better as a team. They break out of their defensive zone better, for example. I also note that they have a larger pool of JV players to choose from as opposed to last season.

Saying that a given team has shown improvement in certain areas doesn't mean that we think that they are better than other teams. Can you see the difference?

Not well, I suspect. But it will give us a perspective, maybe, about the relative strengths of Luverne, New Ulm, and Hutch.

Big game in New Ulm tonight...

New Ulm Area is short handed still.

However, Marshall on a big sheet may have trouble.

Will be a fun one to see what happens.

I am taking New Ulm Area 8 Marshall 0.... After watching the Tigers on Tuesday I just dont see how they will be able to keep up

I disagree! Rivalry and section games aren't big in the beginning of the year? Every game should be a big game. You only get about 25 a year.

Chalk talk nailed it. They all matter in my opinion. Think if Luverne loses to redwood tonight it doesnt matter? If Marshall thumps New Ulm tonight (wont happen) that could give you a pretty heavy opinion of the top of the section couldn't it?

P.S. was planning on putting a witty Indonesian quip here but teak beat me to it.
