Thought I would add a post and show what "CW" (Conventional Wisdom) is predicting this week. These are the predicted winners and average scores (rounded) of the entire group. CW did not do particularly well in Weeks 1 & 2 - we'll see if that trend continues in Week 3.

Week 3 starts with a major upset, at least according to our panel of “experts” here. It was:

Hill-Murray 1, Lakeville North 3

The Panthers were led by Bemidji State-bound Alexis Joyce’s two goals and Maddie McClade’s goal and assist. Abby Cooper stopped all but one of the Raiders’ 18 shots on goal.

Somewhat surprising is that only one of our prognosticators – FishEye – had Lakeville North winning this game. And FishEye narrowly missed the getting the score right, having predicted a 3-2 game. Still a very nice start to go up a point on all the rest of us "experts".

In the second reported final this evening our expert panel did much better, going 20 for 24, but nobody predicted the Rams would be shut out:

Thief River Falls 2, Roseau 0

Emily Bergland and Brandi Malwitz scored the only goals of the game to lead visiting Thief River Falls past Roseau. Frances Marshall stopped all 24 Rams’ shots to get the shutout for the Prowlers.

And in the third of four games it was:

Cretin-Derham Hall 0, Mounds View 1

No. 12 ranked Mounds View got the only goal they needed from their No. 12, Julia Unterseher, to get past No. 20 Cretin-Derham Hall at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine. Unterseher’s goal, assisted by Sydney Brodt, came on the power play at 4:18 of the 2nd period. Mary Dingman was called upon to make 14 saves for her shutout, while Emma May kept the Raiders close, allowing just one goal on 26 Mounds View shots.

With the win the Mustangs proved 13 doubters here wrong, while a slight minority (11) got it right. But no one predicted such a low scoring affair, so with three of four games in the books we still do not have any correct scores.

Look for a very low scoring Leaderboard following the outcome of the night’s fourth and final game.

Well done, fisheye. Also, I think that CW might suffer from the outliers' predictions skewing things a bit. Who knows if the median score would be a better predictor.

Assuming it’s accurate, Minnesota-scores.net is reporting what for sure is the biggest upset of the night:

#19AA Bloomington Jefferson/Kennedy 2, #10AA Dodge County 1

This surprising result – again assuming the score was correctly reported to Minnesota-scores.net – is not yet showing up on either the Hub or MGHCA, so game details are not yet available.

Not one of our experts saw this one coming – everybody gets a big fat goose egg! So after this week’s first set of games, our leaders have a grand total of……..2 points each. With one exception, who is coming up empty so far, everyone else  has just a single point – out of four games!

Here’s the list of those with 2 points each:

Maverick2000
wolfman
clutterbucket
36Guy
fishfreak11
Knight7
sinbin
D6 Girls Fan
FishEye

The next set of games (six of them) is not until Friday.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! :)

P.S. And congrats to the Jaguars on their big win and proving all the naysayers wrong!

Final note from tonight:

The box score of the Bloomington/Dodge County game, now up on the Hub, shows that Dodge County had a whopping 48-22 SOG advantage. Kudos to Bloomington goalie Bailey Plaman for keeping Dodge County scoreless until Kalli McCullen and Olivia Stone were able to provide her team with the goals needed to win it in the 3rd period. Each of their tallies was assisted by Hannah Currin.

In a 'feast or famine' world, I suppose we had our famine yesterday and we get to feast tomorrow.

No, no, this is probably closer to the norm--the majority of us running at a 25% clip. I feel much more comforable being completely clueless.

I think there is more parity this year than in years past, both in A and AA. Maybe by the end of the year, teams with new players will have brought them along to be big contributors, or will have figured out line combinations and shortened benches appropriately. This early in the year there's too much uncertainty to be real accurate. It's rare for new players to have it all figured out a couple weeks in.

That's what makes it so fun for us prognosticators.

Yeah if anything the new players seem to have things figured out a lot more than we have.

First reported score this evening:

Blaine 4, Hibbing/Chisholm 1

Four different players scored goals, and five others had one assist each, in Blaine’s balanced attack at the Grand Rapids IRA Civic Center. The Bengals had a lopsided 49-14 advantage in shots on goal.

If this game is any indication, our prognosticators are back on track after an extremely WEAK performance Tuesday night. No less than SEVEN managed to predict the 4-1 score and earn the bonus, while 16 of 17 of those remaining had Blaine winning and netted a single point each. Getting two were Maverick2000, Orange_Wisent, capitalpride, hockeyfan87, D6 Girls Fan, hockeybozo and Antagonist.

P.S. Offhand I don't remember a game where we had seven participants nailing the score, which is great and all but I sure wish I could have joined in on the party! ;)

In tonight’s second reported final score it was:

Proctor/Hermantown 2, Thief River Falls 6

Thief River Falls’s Emily Bergland scored two goals and added two assists in the Prowlers’ 6-2 win over visiting Proctor/Hermantown. Shots were fairly even at 35-30.

Our panel was unanimous in thinking TRF would prevail. Both spars46 and Antagonist earn the extra point for getting the 6-2 score correct.

With four Friday night games not yet reported the extra point here allows Antagonist to move into a three-way tie with Maverick2000 and D6 Girls Fan at 5 points each.

Two more results are in:

Duluth 0, Andover 0

Duluth’s K Henricksen made 37 saves and Andover’s Maddie Rooney made 21 as both goaltenders recorded shutouts at the Andover Community Center.

In the opinion of our group this was a major upset, as everyone but rascalbrock thought the Huskies would win, in many cases handily (average “CW” predicted score was 4-1). So congrats to Duluth – and especially to K Hendricksen - on holding Andover to a scoreless tie.

Alexandria 0, Mound-Westonka 4

Hunter Gallus scored two goals and added an assist, and Emma Polusny stopped all 29 Alexandria shots for the shutout, in leading the White Hawks a 4-0 win.

Mound-Westonka was favored by 22 of 24, but nobody predicted the 4-0 score. FlyingWarrior and u12dad came closest at 3-0.

Two more results are outstanding – hope to post a full Leaderboard by the end of the evening.

Score from Minnesota-Scores.net:

Benilde-St. Margaret's 6, Blake 0

Not yet posted on the Hub or MGHCA, so no game details yet, but if accurate their 5-0 win over No. 2A Blake would be a "statement win" for the now No. 2AA Red Knights.

Although everyone had Benilde winning, most thought it would be a closer game. The average (CW) predicted score was 4-2.

Now just one game outstanding tonight, also from the Cake-Eater tourney: Breck vs. Edina.

Edit: Corrected score from 5-0 to 6-0 - had no impact on point totals.

Final Friday night score:

Breck 2, Edina 4

U of M commit Taylor Williamson paced Edina to a 4-2 win over Breck in the annual Cake Eater Tournament at Braemar Arena. Williamson scored the two deciding goals in the 3rd period after the game was deadlocked at 2-2 after two. Both came in the last two minutes of regulation play. For the game the Hornets had a very decisive 39-13 margin in shots on goal.

Our prognosticators unanimously picked Edina to win, but only two - u12dad and “Big Games veteran” sinbin - got the 4-2 score right.
So, after this week’s ten games through Friday evening, our contest remains very tight. With just three Saturday games to go, here is how things stand:

1.Maverick2000 – 8 points
sinbin – 8
D6 Girls Fan – 8
Antagonist – 8

5.wolfman – 7
clutterbucket – 7
Orange_Wisent – 7
36Guy – 7
U12dad – 7
capitalpride – 7
Hockeyfan87 – 7
Knight7 – 7
spars46 – 7
FishEye – 7
Hockeybozo – 7

16. Six tied with 6

22. Three with 5

I don’t remember any previous contest being this close heading into the final day…an upset, or a correct score or two, will determine our winner(s)!

Two out of three results are in on this final day of Week 3:

South St. Paul 2, Buffalo 1
South St. Paul got goals from Maddie DeSmith and Taylor Cashman to get by No. 9AA Buffalo 2-1. The Packers’ Sydeny Conley stopped all but one of the Bisons’ 35 shots on goal.

In the minds of our panel the result here was a pretty big upset, as 19 of 24 had Buffalo winning on their home ice. Of the five who picked the Packers to win, D6 Girls Fan and hockeybozo also got the score right, and they each pick up a very important bonus point as this week’s contest draws to a close.

Alexandria 1, Orono 5
As of 9:15PM neither the Hub or MGHCA has any game stats available, so we’ll just cut right to the chase: of the 21 who picked Orono to win, we had FOUR correct scores: Maverick2000, clutterbucket, 36Guy and capitalpride.

The result of the CDH/Roseville game will hopefully be known a little later this evening, at which time I’ll post the final results for Week 3. For now let’s just say that going into this game we do have an actual leader, who is just a point ahead of two others...And, with a little luck, either could overtake our leader and capture sole possession of first place, with a correct score.

Stay tuned! :)

Final score for the day and the week:

Cretin-Derham Hall 2, Roseville 3
Roseville rallied and got goals from Allyson Reilly and Claire Krelitz to get past Cretin-Derham Hall 3-2. Also for Roseville Kathryn Larson had a goal and an assist and Erika Bjorkman had two assists. For the game Roseville had a 34-22 edge in shots on goal.

Well our leader going into this game held on, picking Roseville to win while his two closest trailers each had CDH. Congratulations goes to D6 Girls Fan on a strong finish today, having picked the winners in each of our three games, including a correct score in the South St. Paul/Buffalo game.

Here’s the final standings for Week 3:

1. D6 Girls Fan – 12 points

2. Maverick2000 - 10
clutterbucket – 10
capitalpride – 10
sinbin – 10
hockeybozo – 10
Antagonist – 10

8. wolfman – 9
Silent But Deadly – 9
36Guy – 9
MNHockeyFan – 9
hockeyfan87 – 9
FishEye – 9

14. Orange_Wisent – 8
u12dad – 8
FlyingWarrior – 8
Knight7 – 8
spars46 – 8
Nordic – 8
Otter – 8

21. Four with 7

And with a correct score in the CDH/Roseville game our friend CW finishes with 8 points for the week…

Look for Week 4 to be posted yet this evening – thanks to everyone for participating! :)
