Yeah, I noticed the apparent tone of Peterson's comments in the article as well. Encouraging news for Rapids fans, if it is true. I sure hope they have an active search committee to find the right replacement for LaRoque. I have to believe the next coach could influence a player's decision to stay or go.

Could it be Buzz Christensen. Head coach for 1 season and brought home a state championship!

Surprising announcement but glad he got to go out on his own terms. I always liked and respected him as a coach and thought he represented the team and community well. Best wishes Bruuuuuce!

Anxious to see who gets to lead GR in this new chapter of its program.

First off you hope everything is all right with Bruce and his family's health, that's the primary concern and he is due his privacy.

After that, and I'm no where near the situation, but the district I taught in had a first Friday in August as a "drop dead" date for retirement. The way benefits change these dates are significant for those eligible, a local high profile coach had to resign both his teaching and coaching position August 1st per district rules for retirement reasons, he has to reapply for the coaching position should he want to remain coaching. Staying another year could cost you thousands per year in retirement.

Nice article. Hopefully GR can get someone with the same type of even keel approach.

Hopkins

Post by ripping1 »

Royals dad. Wish the best for the new coach he is a great guy and good coach. My son played for him years ago. The problem with Hopkins in not the coaches or even the talent level of the kids it is the parents of the players. They really need to just step back. At the varsity level at any sport it is between the coach and the player. Time for the boys to grow up. It is the coaches job to put the best team on the ice to compete in every game. Face it your kid might not play. Hopkins will continue to lose kids that want to play at the next level. The kids leave because they want to get there by working hard and continuing to improve their skills during the season and the off season. They want the team to play as a team, act like young adults and deal with issues without whinning to their parents. If they want to play at the next level they need to toughen up.
They don't want their Mommies/Daddies getting them play time by complaining to the AD. That is why kids leave. Hopkins has had some fabulous coaches the last 15+ years but the parents run them out plain and simple. If a player is good they will get seen no matter where they play so why not play somewhere that the parent politics does not play as much of a factor. Look what Palouchi did with the girls program---he was run off by the parents in the boys program. Really sad. Many of Hopkins coaches that have been run off have gone on to coach in very successful programs. Just saying.

Coach Openings

I would like to toss the name of John Rothstein out there as a possible replacement for the head coaching position in Grand Rapids. He has the coaching experience and the respect of the hockey community in GR. Any other names being tossed around?
