Class A Rankings 2-17-13

Post by HShockeywatcher »

My apologies, as I see there was a thread started and my absence was missed. I was without internet access until now this weekend, so they are dated retroactively

The last week had some surprising wins for teams, which resulted in some moves. The situation is still the same it was last week, two teams at the top followed by 10 teams that could be interchanged depending on what criteria you use to rank them.

Enjoy!

1. [1] Saint Thomas Academy (21-2-2)
The Cadets end the regular season with three high scoring games against lower conference opponents. As the top seed, section play starts this week. They have only lost to Minnetonka and Hill-Murray this year.

2. [2] Breck (21-3-1)
Three of the last four games have been 1 goal games for the Mustangs. The top seed in section 2A with a couple teams hoping to give them a run for their money in the final. St Thomas and Cathedral are the only Class A teams Breck has lost to this season.

3. [5] Hermantown (20-4-1)
The Hawks end the season end the season winning their last 9 games, 7 on the road. The top seed in section 5A, they should cruise to the final and have a good game with a Cathedral team they previously lost to in OT. Hermantown has only lost to Cathedral and Denfeld, both by the same score, and they later beat Denfeld.

4. [7] East Grand Forks (18-3-3)
Could the Green Wave end up the #2 seed at state if Cathedral makes it? With a shut out win over Cathedral earlier in the season, it will be interesting to see how things turn out. Their only Class A loss has been to Thief River Falls, who they beat in their second meeting.

5. [6] Thief River Falls (16-9)
The Prowlers have just as good of a chance of making it to state as they do not making it to the final as they have both lost to and beaten Warroad and East Grand Forks this season. If they do make it out of the section, they will be very prepared for tough competition.

6. [10] Mahtomedi (15-10)
The Zephyrs have a quality schedule and recently beat Totino-Grace to earn the #2 seed in section 4A. The game was won in OT, so the rematch should be a good game.

7. [11] Totino-Grace (19-6-1)
The Eagles have ended the season with a win after losing a few games they were earlier projected to win. The third seed in section 4A, they could easily be into the section final.

8. [3] Rochester Lourdes (18-7)
The Eagles showed they are definitely a good team by beating Prior Lake but ended up losing their third Class A game this week. A rank anywhere from 3 to 10 could still make sense for them. It’ll be interesting to see where they are seeded if they can make it to state again.

9. [8] Duluth Denfeld {16-8}
The Hunters have the top seed in their section along with an 8-1 victory this season over the #2 seed in the section and a very good chance at making it to state. Making it to state would be the 4th time in school history as well as the first time in 24 years.

10. [9] Warroad (17-6-2)
The #3 seed in section 8A, few would be surprised to see the Warriors at the X. They have tied the top seed and beaten the #2 seed; there will be some good games in this section.

11. [12] Duluth Marshall (13-12)
The Hilltoppers have the #2 seed in section 7A and there is a good chance that they will make it to the section final. No one would predict another blowout loss, so we’ll see how good of a game they can make the rematch.

12. [4] St. Cloud Cathedral (19-6)
The Crusaders wrap the season up with a loss over private school rival, Duluth Marshall. They have beaten Breck this season and a top seed in the state was theirs to lose, but have also had some lows. It’ll be interesting to see how the section semifinal, and hopefully section final, goes for them. Will they be seeded if they make it to state?

Cant argue with any of it. You take alot of crap, but thanks for entertaining all of us again this year. The question for next year is what do you do when the Cadets move up? Still do the A rankings.

You're welcome. And thanks for the comments.

As for next year, only time will tell. Would really take away any silly claim that I have some weird hate for a team that hasn't beaten my alma mater in recent years; that one continues to baffle me #-o

Oh well. Time would really be the big constraint. I could keep up Class A, could do AA as well, could even do a ranking of both classes, or all three. My limitation will be time, so we'll see.

Duluth Marshall is 13-12, not 12-13. Denfeld beat them 8-3, not 8-1 earlier this year.

Happy Hermantown is moving up but not so sure Cathedral should have dropped to #12 for one loss. Any other reasons?

As I've been saying for weeks, I try not to think of much of the rankings as a set in stone list, but more of as a fluid list, especially with much of the parity in the 3-12 teams. Breck has played close games with a few teams, even lost one, and St Thomas has played close games with Breck.

You also have many teams who either won/lost close games in their one meeting or won/lost blowout games in their one meeting that likely wouldn't end up that way five times were they to play that many.

Speaking of Cathedral specifically though; they were on a nice run that started with a win over a Hermantown team who was on a similar run. It's hard to ignore a team who is one of two to beat Breck as well. They also had the luxury of EGF, who had shut them out early in the season, being lower because of a loss to TRF. In the same week that they lose at home to a team who hasn't done anything but lose to good teams this season EGF avenges their earlier loss to TRF. With Cathedral's stumbles this season (Tech, Princeton, maybe Warroad) and now losing to Marshall, it's hard to keep them up with their run being over.

Do I think they are all of a sudden "8 teams worse?" No, they simply move to the back of the web of comparable teams.
With their wins over Breck and Hermantown and shut out of Little Falls and beating of Princeton, they are definitely a team no quality team should want to meet up with, but have also shown they can play down.
