Observer,
Thank you for your comment. I realize the make-up for the regions is set up years in advance. My point is less about what particular districts comprise the regions this year, but rather why the "extra" spots in the South Region are filled with the lower seeds from the districts with more teams. Assume, for example, that Minnesota Hockey has no idea how good teams from any particular district may be in a given year. (Not particularly realistic, but just hang with me for a minute.) Further assume a scenario like the NCAA tournament--all #1 seeds are theoretically roughly equal in skill, followed by the #2s, #3s, etc. Under such a scenario, because the South is populated with two #3 seeds and three #4 seeds, the number of "top" teams that any of the teams in the South has to face and defeat in order to make it to State is much less than any of the other three regions (each of which has SIX #1 / #2 seeds, compared to THREE #1 / #2 seeds in the South). This could have been alleviated if all of the "replacement" seeds in the South did not consist of other districts' weakest qualifying teams, but instead were, at a minimum, a mix of #2 or #3 seeds.
I still believe that unless something changed over the weekend (Elliott, you make it home ok?), you will see teams privately celebrating for losing certain non-championship games in the district playoffs. And even if those games are played on the "up and up" (which, sadly, I doubt), there likely will be whispers about the results, which would be unfair to all the participants and coaches.

I understand that knowing CPR is a good thing, but now mandating coaches be certified? How much are we going to havve to pay for that? On top of all the other things we have to do to coach they are going to add more requirements?
Do they realize how hard it is just to get coaching volunteers, especially at the Mite and under level? I lost 5 coaches this year because they didn't get their modules done in time. Some of them flat out said they weren't going to waste 8 hours behind a computer screen. Others were new coaches that didn't understand, even after I told them multiple times what they needed to do. None of these were head coaches but assistants who helped out and it was nice to have bodies on the ice when there are so many kids out there at once. Adding more to our plates is goign to mean less volunteers and more coaches leaving the ranks.
USAH is now going to be the energy drink police? Good luck. We tell the kids to not drink that crap and it's the parents who ignore us and feed them full of Monster and Red Bull.

i had some of the same thoughts you did SC.
But the note that caught my eye the most was checking at PeeWees. That's a laugher, Mark. How in the world does the 800 lb. gorilla (MNH) explain to Colorado Springs (USAH)..."ah, yeah...we are gonna start hitting again at PWs...let me see you try to stop us."????
I'm not saying I'm in favor of or against...just curious how a state of our size is going to do this without being smacked by USAH?

The smart thing would to start bringing in the body contact at Squirts where it can be taught at a younger age where strength does not play as large of a role. I did not disagree when they pulled the checking from the game. I did not like it, but it had become a hazard in the game. Combination of years of bad/no coaching and poor refereeing all played a role, in my opinion. But as it sits now, I think we are putting more kids at risk as they now step out on the ice where checking is allowed for the 1st time when they are playing against young men. Kids will get hurt. Kids are getting hurt. The idea was to teach checking and body contact at Squirts and Pee Wees in practice even though it is not allowed in games. Just like we all should have suspected; it ain't happening. After the checking was pulled out, my thought was we need to regroup, and get it back into the game as quickly as possible. Lets teach kids how to give a proper body check. Lets teach kids how to take a body check. Lets teach kids the reason why/when to give a body check. Lets as refs, call the infractions of improper body contact the way it was always supposed to be called. Lets as coaches correct the players for infractions of improper body contact even if there was not a call or was not seen by the referee. Lets start this at the Squirt level.elliott70 wrote:We are trying to be creative, brain storm. AND record keeping.YouthHockeyHub wrote:i had some of the same thoughts you did SC.
