I can tell u Horm is not going to play for the Gophers with-out finacial help. He is not a walk on nor did he get a full ride.

Great kid great leader. Have to have a lot of respect for a kid to turn down Ann Arbor to stay at Benilde, Captain the Lacrosse and Hockey teams to state titles and now play for the Gophers. Awesome all around athlete and a gteat kid! He will have a gtreat career with Gophers!

Christian had offers from teams all over the country but decided ti play for Gophers and follow his dreams.

Agreed, while many people might want to believe or feel that their insights are accurate - MNS has a pretty good pulse on the BSM community, and this is probably as close to 100% accurate as it gets IMO.

I just don't believe a player with other opps (from any program) would turn those away to "walk on".

I really like seeing those class act players get rewarded, whether it be to the U or anywhere. In a culture of me first, I like it even more that Lucia doesn't shy away from the character guys. I can think of a certain programs, including my alma mater that should look into doing that more often.

I don't know the answer, but really, it doesn't matter. The kid is getting a chance to live his dream. He'll get to wear the sacred "M". Lots of kids out there who dream of getting that opportunity, but never get to live it. Yes, I know that isn't every Minnesota kid's dream.

Christian is a great hockey player. A two-way player. He will get every opportunity to contribute. He may have to be patient and work hard (ala Travis Boyd this past season), but with his skillset, character, and work ethic, he'll get his opportunities.

Why is it hard to believe that he could be going there with no financial help? His family is very wealthy and doesn't need the help and maybe he just wants to wear the maroon and gold. Michael Sit is attending BC with no financial help.

It has been said that he is considered a walk-on, but I would think the one's talking about financial help would be due to academic scholarships, grants, etc. as to say he isn't getting financial help from the hockey program specifically in his freshman season.

slightly off topic here, but as a gopher fan myself, i may be out of the loop somewhat but what d-men have the gophers gotten to commit for the coming years? I just hear a lot about them committing talented forwards but no d-men

Skjei and Reilly are coming in next fall. They have Brodzinski and Bischoff lined up for either 2013 or 2014 depending on what the roster situation looks like after next season.

Reilly just broke Laleggia's (spelling ?) scoring record in the BCHL and is being compared to Duncan Keith. Laleggia was just the freshman of the year in the WCHA.

I am still puzzled as to what they are going to do with their defensman. As of now they will have 10 defensman coming in. Gopherblog...How old are Reilly and Skjei? Why not have one or both play another year of juniors. As much as I think Marshall, Holl, and Parenteau could be replaced. They did just make it to the Frozen 4 with these defensman. I can only imagine they will all be better next season, and more mature.

Skjei is a likely first/second round pick with two years of junior under his belt already. Reilly was already drafted and, as you explained, had a better year in the BCHL than Laleggia did the prior season. I don't see any good reason not to bring them in. Neither of them are likely going to play four years of college hockey anyway so the Gophers may as well get the most out of their talents while they can. If the scholarship room is there, no need to wait.

As for Christian, the "walk on" label seems to get thrown around the neck of players who are invited to play but are not offered any financial help to start. Thompson, Student and Miller where likely in the same boat last year. Its important to understand that this is normally a year to year agreement and if Christian performs well he will no doubt earn his piece of the pie.
Exactly. It's year-to-year and he most definitely could earn some scholarship money if he plays well. And I expect him to :)
Just for clarification, not every scholarship is year-to-year. That is the way colleges and universities like to classify it, but in many cases there is an underlying agreement for the four or five year duration. 8)

I don't think that is right. There are a lot of resources out there, including these ones, that say otherwise:

I think the first cite is actually fairly comparable with my description, and the second I'll accept at face value. The actual scholarships are renewable, but I know of a fair number of cases where the underlying agreement was unless the athlete does something wrong criminally or academically that the school will honor the five year commitment. It is usually a "gentlemen's agreement" and may be difficult to litigate, but there are mutual promises made. 8)

I don't think any scholarship is guaranteed past the current year. But if you can show me any resource that says otherwise, I'll concede your point.

And no, the first site does not say what you are saying.

I agree..he gets to live his dreams but lets not spin it into a scholarship player story. Read the MNHOCKEYHUB article today..hes says it himself.

Like I said above he is not getting a full ride but he is getting scholarship money. Why do u have just a hard time with Horn getting a partial to live his dream? Not many players on the Gophers have a full ride.

I think we can all agree that at the time of Christians signing the U had very limited money left for the 2012-2013 year. I think the gophs got a great player at a discount price and we should all be happy for both Christian and the U

I think it's wonderful that he's getting a partial ride. Hopefully he thrives at the U and earns a full one :)

He got his books paid for. That is ALL from the athletic department. That doesnt mean he might have gotten lots of academic scholarships, which is probably very true. However, as far as from the hockey team he got his books paid for.

It was his dream to play for the U of M. I wish him nothing but the best.

That will clear that up.

Why do people care so much about how much $$$ Christian Horn is receiving in scholarships? He's a very talented hockey player and I hope he has a great career with the Gophers.

It doesn't and shouldn't matter.
