Two kids from here went to try out for a team. Called back a month or so later for another round. More flights. Also, at age 10 kids aren't going without mom and/or dad.
One got cut and dad was quite disappointed.
As for the one that ultimately made it, the fun is just beginning. Tournament last weekend (flights) and more on the way (more flights), plus some practices (flights), and then the capper - about a week in Edmonton, 3,000 miles away. (I'm assuming flights, but the ambitious could drive and spend the same amount on gas.)
Minnesotans don't understand the money spent to play reasonably high-level hockey in other parts of the country. That family is hardly unusual down here.
