Not that Besse's career is going to follow the same trajectory as Spehar's (who was a good, but not great, college player), but it does look like he is going to be equally over-hyped heading into college. It is going to lead to expectations that will be tough for the kid to meet.
That's why I'm suggesting people wait until they see what he's able to do next year before making any comparisons or assumptions.

Agreed. But people didn't really start getting excited until he played in the USHL after the season was over and produced there as well.sachishi4 wrote:how about as recent at the 2011 tourney? Yes, I do. Who hasn't given Besse the "respect he deserves" here? Surely it wasn't me. And no, he wasn't giving anyone "respect". He was chiming in on a height/weight discussion. Even if his feedback n his son's height/weight is accurate, it changes little. The guy who was trying to say Besse is significantly bigger/faster than Spehar and is significantly bigger than Kloos is still wrong.InYourFace09 wrote:Haha and you think all of your comments are unbiased! I never said smaller players don't make it in the NHL. They can and they do. You need to read more carefully.BBB wrote:Maybe the new NHL is just right for Cammarata to make it.
What I did say is those types of players don't tend to get signed really early like you tend to see with kids that have the more prototypical NHL frame.
Is making players more complete or playing in 'disciplined' system a bad thing for a player like Besse?
Not necessarily bad. But it does raise the question how well the adjustment will go. I don't feel that is an unfair question to raise.
When I say "put the reins on", I'm not implying nobody puts up points in that UW system. It just how they accomplish it is different. Some teams encourage creativity and skill while other teams focus more on structure and staying within the system. There is more than one way to do it and some players fit one way better than the other.

I posted the link to this article in another thread, and it's interesting what Ken Pauly says about Besse at the end:
Bob Sansevere: Grant Besse scored all five goals for you in the championship game, including a short-handed hat trick. He's only a junior, so will he be considered the best player in the state next year?
Ken Pauly: For sure. Without a doubt. I've been around hockey a long time, and I talked to people who've been around hockey longer than me, and they believe he is the best pure sniper they've ever seen.

I don't know about best player, but for sure he will be one of best (if not THE best) pure snipers in the state next year.

I don't think anyone is doubting (at least recently) Besse's ability. The question was, why didn't the Gopher's pursue him? And I think that has been more than adequately explained. He was a good pickup for Wisconsin, but I like the high-end forward recruits the Gophers landed better.MNHockeyFan wrote:I posted the link to this article in another thread, and it's interesting what Ken Pauly says about Besse at the end:

I dunno what is about those Sampair's but they are amongst the fastest skaters. The Sampair that played for Hill in '97 was extremely fast, and now this Sampair. Must be in the genes. I think there was also a Sampair or two that might have played for Mahtomedi.wingman wrote:Sats81 wrote:

This is hilarious. Especially to those of us who have actually watched him play a considerable amount of hockey. So because you have probably seen him play once, on TV albeit you just pigeonhole him as a player. Sampair is a nice HS player but not even close to Kloos.
FYI: When LS played HM in head to head competition Charlie Sampair stopped Kloos cold, playing defense for the game, a position he hasn't played since squirts. I'd like to see Kloos Stop Sampair at 6-1 and 190 while Sampair plays forward for the game and Kloos plays defense...Sampair had a role to fill this year helping some young D, and when the D where out sick (Heinrick) he stepped in and helped his team win against LS--and deposited Kloos in the back of the net. Kinda of sick and tired of hearing Sampair is an OK High School Player. He is a Team player first and foremost, he has the best speed and hands in the state, and he led his team in goals all the while playing both ways hard. Just ask the kid from maple Grove that ended up in the players box when Sampair thought it was time for that kid to have a line change...Besse and Kloos did not do that this year....but they sure scored alot of goals.
I can splash in the rink puddles!

Very possible, since Charlie Sampair originally played youth for Mahtomedi, and then one year for WBL youth I believe before Hill.Nostalgic Nerd wrote:I dunno what is about those Sampair's but they are amongst the fastest skaters. Minnesota had Cammarata and Guertler committed and were focusing on getting a commitment from Fasching they were sure they would get before Besse even visited Wisconsin. Minnesota never pursued Besse, so if he "didn't want to go to Minnesota" (and I don't believe for a second you know what he wants), then I guess things worked out well for everyone.flatontheice wrote:He didnt want to go to Minnesota. If you're referring to Brandon Sampair, I believe he graduated in '96. He was a great player for SCSU. I hope his cousin Charlie keeps his options open instead of signing with the WHL. Even if it means he goes D1 with somebody other than the Huskies, I hate losing Minnesotans to Major Juniors.Nostalgic Nerd wrote: I dunno what is about those Sampair's but they are amongst the fastest skaters. Is it possible that some kids don't always want to go to the U of M?
You must be Grant's dad then if you know exactly what he wants?

When did I EVER say every kid wants to go to Minnesota OR that Grant did? I just said I don't believe that guy knows what he wants. The poster I was responding to, not I, acted like he knew what Grant wants. So put aside the petty Gopher hatred and post rationally.InYourFace09 wrote:

If he does know what Grant wants, and Grant didn't want to go to Minnesota, then I believe I said "guess things worked out well for everyone".
Fact remains, Minnesota didn't pursue him, so what Grant "wanted" is irrelevant as far as the Gophers are concerned.
Nothing against Besse. He is a great player and will probably have a great college career. I wish he wasn't going to one of our biggest rivals. But the Gophers had other high end players targeted. If Besse were to come in, he would have likely had to play another role and that wouldn't have been either good for him or a good fit for the Gophers.

Fair enough. While I agree with what you usually say on the board, i'll respectfully disagree with you on this one. Spehar wasn't the most efficient skater and had an akward stride. In fact, I believe had he been a better skater he would have gone further (coupled with him not 'burning out' on the game).JDUBBS1280 wrote:I skated against Spehar.
