Section 4A 2011-12
Bracket:
http://mshsl.org/mshsl/showxmlbrackets. ... acket=6084
Seeding is the following for 4A (or so I heard):
1) SSP
2) SPU
3) Simley
4) Sibley
5) Totino
6) Mahtomedi
7) Minnehaha
KRACH said - differs on 2-3-4 order. Head-to-head/Common Opponents considerations (#1 & #2 in seeding criteria) probably made a difference here***:
http://www.bgoski.com/KRACH_SEC_20120201.htm
13 South St. Paul 17-6-0 104.548 A 4
54 Henry Sibley 11-8-0 12.751 A 4
57 St. Paul United 14-9-1 11.875 A 4
58 Simley 13-8-2 10.302 A 4
74 Totino-Grace 6-14-3 4.150 A 4
75 Mahtomedi 8-14-0 3.961 A 4
82 Minnehaha 10-10-3 2.713 A 4
***Note that KRACH had input from the games on 31Jan whereas not all the coaches seeding did from what I understand - or most had already electronically (email) voted before the games that night. Looks like the SPU/Minnehaha tie that night had a lot of impact in KRACH and coaches probably would have had other common opponents or head-to-head considerations to account for had more time been taken.

I watched the final conf/reg season Sibley (4th seed)/Simley (3rd Seed) game @ Simley last night and it should be an interesting section tourney if this game is any indication of what is to come. Simley outshot and outplayed Sibley for parts of the game but special teams made the difference:

.• HENRY SIBLEY 4, SIMLEY 3 (OT): Three of the Warriors' four goals against the Spartans were shorthanded, including the winner from senior Rachel Friberg in overtime. Sophomore Erika Hillstrom scored a shorthanded goal of her own late in regulation to force the extra session. Simley outshot Henry Sibley 35-19.

I think the big question is if any team in this section can compete with a very good SSP squad. I'd have to look back and see how the others did against SSP this year - and also see if SSP was full-strength during that timeframe when they played. If SSP makes it back to state, then I believe it is their 10th appearance since the first tourney in 1995. 10 times in 17 opportunities is amazing!

They did go in single class and at AA in past seasons. The switch to Class A was in the past 5 years or so I believe.ayhfan wrote:Not sure its Amazing--Compete playing AA teams for most of season then be put into the single A tourney. Expect them back in the tourney, Again..
That aside, for a truly Class A size school, pretty impressive to go to state even back in single class and class AA years as frequently as they did IMHO.

Congrats to Minnehaha for a big W last night and quite an upset - to steal a post from another poster/thread:
Must have been a very emotional win for the Saints last night in the opening round of Section 4A, knocking off #2 seed and Tri-Metro rival SPU in the second overtime. Julia Carle came up big with 48 saves, including 12 in OT. There might be a better freshman goalie in the state but I haven't heard of one.
Minnehaha's goalie definitely stole the show last night. Doubt there are many teams who win Section games after getting outshot 50-18. Lost in all the drama around the upset was the fact that the United lost one of its 1st-line forwards early in the first period after she fell ill from the norovirus. The threat of contamination was apparently so great that the school closed the ice rink today. We wish this great young lady a speedy recovery! And we wish Minnehaha well as they continue to battle through Section 4A.

Copy from another thread - at least two of the Section 4A coaches mentioned in here - Dave @ SSP and Ashley at Simley:

I might have been on to something when I posted this recently...ghshockeyfan wrote:I watched the final conf/reg season Sibley (4th seed)/Simley (3rd Seed) game @ Simley last night and it should be an interesting section tourney if this game is any indication of what is to come. Since then we had the Minnehaha W showcasing some stellar goaltending and another great game last night in Simley vs Mahtomedi:

We could see a rivalry Simley/SSP final unless the remaining teams have something to say about that...Friday's girls' hockey: Simley edges Mahtomedi

.• SIMLEY 1, MAHTOMEDI 0: Senior Jessica Pate will get a chance to lead the Spartans for at least one more game. Pate scored the game’s only goal with eight minutes remaining, moving Simley into the Class 1A, Section 4 semifinals with a victory over the Zephyrs. Eighth-grader Emma Tschida made 24 saves to record the shutout.

Yes, especially big win for a program with no JV team - I believe it may be their first playoff win ever.ghshockeyfan wrote:Congrats to Minnehaha for a big W last night and quite an upset
Perhaps their recent relative success will help to grow their numbers enough to field a JV team in the near future. I could be wrong, but I don't think they've ever had the numbers to field a JV - including the predecessor programs, Minnehaha Academy Redhawks and St. Paul Saints.
