Gotta Love Howie
I know it has been pointed out that Howie Hanson writes some crazy stuff on his blog, but it has been getting better lately. Here are a few recent quotes:
1. "And, with most — if not all — of Duluth’s best bantam and pee wee players already enrolled or headed to Marshall School, it’s no secret that the Hilltoppers will continue to be a Minnesota high school hockey power."
2. "Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Minnetonka and Eagan likely will be ranked 1-2-3 in 2A at the end of the season."
3. "Peterson, Marshall putting Duluth on Minnesota high school hockey map"
4. "In a unique year, the best teams in the state compete in 1A. Class 2A is down, big-time. Believe it."
5. "Marshall upset by No. 2 Benilde-St. Margaret’s"
My responses:
1. I know the source, but can you Duluth guys tell me if there is ANY truth to this statement about the best kids all going to Marshall?
2. Somebody really hates East.
3. Good to know it's Marshall that is finally putting Duluth on the hockey map. Once again, somebody really hates East.
4. I think this is insane, and I'm primarily a Class A follower.
5. Isn't an upset when the underdog wins, not when the clear cut favorite dominates as they are supposed to?
Gotta love it. He should just call his blog "East Hockey Sucks". Is he just a West Duluth guy or is there a good story out there as to why he is so blatantly biased?

Never heard of this guy and I have no connection to Duluth at all, but I was curious, so I went and checked it out for myself.
The guy wrote 3 sentences on Trevor Oslon getting 2 penalties in a USHL game and then shows picture of a girl sitting on the ice...Not sure if thats on purpose or not...

From another thread:
As I mentioned above, he was paid to create a website about Duluth public schools, but it appears this site no longer exists. I wonder if the district pulled the plug on him; that might also explain his new angle.
Because of some of the uncertainty around the Duluth school district in recent years--school closures, levy failures, and so on--there has been some movement of good hockey players towards Marshall. But saying all the good hockey players are going there is an exaggeration, and we'll have to see if this is a long-term trend or only a temporary blip. So there is a grain of truth to that one, though the others are all ludicrous.
Bottom line, this man was discredited as a hockey commentator a long time ago and really doesn't deserve our attention anymore, unless we perhaps need a cheap laugh. Ranting about him is pleasantly cathartic.
The Marshall-boosting angle is a new one. I suspect money is involved. If you go to his site and click on the "high schools" link, all you'll find a pretty long advertisement for Marshall, and no mention of the public schools.karl(east) wrote:Some time ago, Mr. Hanson made himself a few different user names and tried to post links to his blog all over the forum. He didn't react well when a few people pointed out his glaring errors.![]()
When Mr. Hanson is not making up nonsense about Duluth-area hockey, he spends his time as a "full-time blogger." One can identify him at the Heritage Center by finding the man wearing the "Howie Blog" sweatshirt. He writes about community events and the schools and so on; his site might be interesting if not for his unfortunate attempts to be a hockey analyst.
He's a Denfeld guy, as you'll be able to see if you ever look at one of his all-area teams. I was first introduced to him when he did an internet radio broadcast of an East-Denfeld game in 09. He got the players' names right on the third try usually, and did some rather epic moaning about the referees when East pulled ahead in the third period. Since then, his exploits include an incredibly long post that slammed the 09 East team as arrogant, an abortive career as a radio analyst, conning the Duluth school district into paying him a lot of money to set up a website on the schools, and several bizarre attempts to start a story about a group of Russian hockey star exchange students coming to Duluth.
Have I made my opinion on him clear enough?

"Howie Hanson is Duluth's first and only full-time blogger (HowieBlog.com). Hanson is generally regarded as Duluth's 'most-connected' journalist and active community-builder. He recently developed and continues to operate a daily news and activities site for Duluth Public Schools." [
