Under the heading... ONLY IN EDINA

Post by NE14HKY »

A buddy of mine called me the other day and told me a story
about an Edina B Squirt team that, after advancing to the Championship
game on Sat., had tournament T-shirts made
for the whole team. It said "Champions" on them. Then came
Sunday and the "Championship Game". They of course lost,
(making the story). The kicker was, the Edina team manager
approached the winning team's manager and asked her if she wanted
to purchase the shirts from her, for full price! ONLY IN EDINA.

Now, I don't have any beefs with Edina. My son has skated a few
summers with a few Edina kids. All have been great people.

Just thought this needed to be shared. :D

Please don't tell me they were supposed to put them on at the rink and run around like they won the NCAA Championship. This is an early-season Sq B tourney. A little perspective may be in order?
Be kind. Rewind.

I heard the same story from a friend as well, the only difference from your story is that I heard it was one of the parents that had them made. Oh and she told them just to cross off Edina and write your name on them.

Wonder if I can buy them for my kid's team ... you know just in case they win a tournament.

Edina or not (I am) there are some things you just don't do. You should never make hotel reservations for State tourney weekend before you qualify, never mention that your goalie has a shutout going, never order T-shirts that say "champions" after the semis; never mention how your team has had so few injuries and never, ever, ever mention how long it has been since you lost a golf ball.

I can just see these shirts worn by some kids in some other country like the Viking 1998 and 2009 Super Bowl championship shirts or Texas Rangers World Series Champs.

So we are clear-
it was a 'buddy' that called you on this?
you 'dont have any beefs with Edina'?
Edina has 'great people'?

I just heard the same story from one of our SQC team managers who was in the room when the Edina parent brought the shirts in and tried to sell them to the Cottage Grove team. She said it was one of the most awkward situations ever...

Funny stuff.

You doubt that there are wacky people in Edina?

Yeah, maybe at a refugee camp in the horn of Africa, by kids who actually need them.

Trust me when I say that being a parent of an Edina hockey player - If this is true - I am completely embarrased and appalled by the actions of this Manager/Parent!
That said I don't think that it "needed to be shared" on the hockey blog - go ahead and laugh about it to your friends, etc. but I have actually been at games where Parents - "Adults" have cursed at our kids, have been berated as they left the ice by teams, and in one instance had to step between a parent of another team and a 9 year old child on the Edina team when they decided to verbally attack the kid as he left the rink!
I did not grow up in Edina and in fact attended school in what was considered a bitter rival of Edina back in the day. I can honestly say that I have met some of the most down to earth, nice, caring people that live in the community.
If you don't have a "beef with Edina" and even indicated that your son has skated with kids from Edina and that they have all been "great people" then why give more ammunition to those who have the "hate Edina simply because it's Edina" mentality?

SBmom? Don't you have treats you need to buy for a soccer game? sorry to hear about what you described, that should never happen. Don't take the Edina bashing to personal, this story deserves to be discussed because 1) its pretty darn funny to think someone is that dumb 2) its Edina and we are all jealous of them so any chance we have to poke fun at them is welcomed by many.

another Edina squirt story from a few years ago...

Fargo Squirt A tournament; 48 of the best teams around the country at the end of Feb. A highlight for many hockey players to just play in the trouney. With that many teams the brackets/games get complicated as teams are in 5 differrent rinks.

Prior to the tourney the Edina Squirt A team manager copied the schedules/games for their team parents as if they won all their brackets. Team lost the first game and the parents were lost the rest of the tourney:)

I dont really mind Edina but dont mind telling a cake eater story every now and then.

Can't you make your point without hurling the snarky insult?
