Rebuilding A Program

Post by Buildaprogram »

Has anyone seen or recall a Private Girls Hockey Program being rebuilt in the last 5 or 6 years from nothing into something?

What was the formula?

All private school students are recruited whether they play sports or not. The schools couldn't exist without recruiting.

Iceage - You are blind if you dont think private schools actively recruit. Our family had a close friend go to a private school and they said the boosters actively reach out to people. In their case they said the coach would never contact them, but the boosters were doing the work.

Trust me when I say about 90 percent of VARSITY kids are recruited to play at Breck, Hill, Benilde, Holy Angels, STA, etc.

The cross country runner or debate kid is not actually recruited. There is a difference. If you dont think this is true than you need some new glasses.

FORMULA SO FAR:

Recruit
A. Booster club reaches out to families.
B. The coach runs a popular summer program (example CODP now CADP summer in which you have to tryout for and they are very selective programs).
1. Letter or offers to participate in this selective program
start occuring when girls are going into 6th and 7th grade. By positive attrition girls gravitate towards the directors more advanced program by relationship building (ie Thoroughbreds of old and Breck).

Seems like you had all this detailed information already, did you open this topic just to take shots at CADP? I know my daughter and others who are public school kids who have benefited from CADP and the work the coach has done. I don't know anything about recruiting or how kids end up at Breck but I am happy there is CADP to help develop girls hockey in MN. The same way I am happy we have OS, Whitecaps, Ice cats,... How people on this board can spin everything that happens into negative blows me away. My daughters have floated between these programs a bit there are some really positive things happening out there and it shows when MN girls get to national events.

If you really need to create a new account on a message board to troll for a chance to rip a program that is pretty sad.

In reading my post I'd have maybe drawn the same conclusion as you have. I have no greivance against Lenny or Breck, my apologies.

Honestly trying to find a formula that works that has worked that others could benefit from.

Citing ones Breck example, I was simply connecting the dots (or thought so) not realizing Breck once struggled.

Knowing CODP was once Bydlons I concluded maybe incorrectly that maybe CODP helped foster the success of the Thoroughbreds but then again, maybe not. Probably it's just a strong alternative to High School.

Knowing that CADP is a nice program I concluded maybe incorrectly that maybe CADP is a feeder program to Breck. I have ZIPPO evidence to this.

My experience with CADP is only the knowledge of some kids from Selects having been invited to partake (no mention of Breck, just the program). I'm also aware of others wanting to partake having trouble getting information on the program. Then of course the tryouts to partake in their camp.

Kind of like an old Harvey Mackay rule on selling, create a demand. Make something really hard to get and people will come to you.

Personally, I think it's BRILLIANT!

Think of it this way, how many people are now going to be googling CADP and calling Lenny now. BRILLIANT again! Create a demand and buzz, people will come.

So I'll still stand by the Formula thus far with no ill will to Lenny/Breck.

POSSIBLE FORMULA SO FAR:

1. Recruit
2. Booster club reaches out to families and perceived top talent.
3. Run a demanding summer camp.
A. A high school coach runs a demanding summer program (an example might be CODP now CADP summer) in which you have to tryout for, invited to and very selective creating a natural demand.
B. Invitation letters to participate in this selective demanding summer program go out to perceived top prospects going into 6th, 7th and 8th graders not even thinking about H.S. Culling the rosters of various select tournaments, boosters, scouting.
C. By positive attrition these girls might naturally gravitate towards a coach they know, like and respect.

I think it's brilliant.....

ANYONE CARE TO ADD....

From PM's
4. Hire a High Profile Coach (examples anyone? (followed by success))
A. Hire a popular 14U coach in a large succesful program that will bring with him top talent and in turn that will draw talent. (an example COULD be a popular 14A coach in an Edina or Eden Prairie where many girls won't get the opportunity to play H.S.)
B. Hire a coach whose name will draw talent.
C. Hire a top AAA coach who ALWAYS draws the top girls to summer teams and will bring those girls with him/her and in turn that will draw talent.
5. Have an Athletic Department/Director that understands the importance athletics in the schools image (Hill Murray, St Thomas, BSM - we all think athletics/great academics don't we)

Recruit like mad at the u6, u8, and u10 levels in the local hockey association. Provide good coaching with an emphasis on fun, skills, and competitiveness (in that order). Talk up the benefits of playing for your local community-based high school. Make sure they have fun and are multi-sport athletes. Do this right, and the cream will rise to the top. And you'll have enough cream to form a good high school program 5-10 years down the road.

Sorry, I just noticed you had 'private' in your post. My comments were directed at building good community-based hockey, which Minnesota excels at.

Actually at my age I am going blind :)

And your right but public schools actively recruit as well. Need I mention basketball, football, and wrestling? From my experience, the majority of the recruiting comes from parents and the players themselves.

But you are wrong with the 90% so I can't trust you :)

The one-year sit out has eliminated most of the transfers at the varsity level.

This is my opinion as well. It's really a parental decision not recruiting at all. Once the school, coach or current player family is contacted and told a player would like to attend they may welcome them but I wouldn't call that recruiting. The parent could say we've decided Sally will attend xxx but that wouldn't be nearly as interesting as saying their daughter was recruited.

In addition to the earlier mentioned items:
... Build a great facility/arena
... Ensure academics are strong at the school

These aren't always true in a private school setting.

???? Iceage not sure you follow HS sports much, the transfer rule if enforced would do that, but it has only slowed the process. It still happens in every sport, the only people who it affects are the ones who truly change schools for academic reasons, the majority of the ones who change for athletic reasons seem to find a loophole and play.
