#46: Centennial

--1 state tournament

They’ve only been to the Class AA tournament once but made the most of the experience, winning a title in 2004 with three shutouts, a feat not accomplished before or since. That single title alone puts them on the Top 75 list. Since 1997 they have also played in 12 Class AA section semifinals (5-7) and five section championships (1-4). This team will very likely move up the chart in future seasons.

#45: Benilde-St. Margaret’s

40.69 pts
--2 state titles (Class A)
--1 state tournament (Class AA); 2 state tournaments (Class A)

Ken Pauly and Benilde’s knew what they were doing when they opted up to Class AA in 2005; the team responded with a third place finish in the state tournament in 2008. Prior to that they had two Class A titles (1999 & 2001).

#44: Rochester Mayo

41.68 pts
--0 state titles
--7 state tournaments

Mayo was strong in the 80’s and 90’s, getting to state six times but only winning one quarterfinal game. Their finest season was 1994-95 when they were edged in the Class AA semifinals in triple overtime by state runner-up Moorhead .

#43: Hermantown

43.95 pts
--1 state title (Class A)
--8 state tournaments (Class A)

Hermantown is another notable beneficiary of the two-class system. In the one-class system, they had just two appearances in the Section 7 semifinals. Since the split, they have failed to get to their section semifinals only once (in 2003). They went undefeated at 29-0-2 in 2006-07, and have three Class A runner-up finishes to their credit. They have played well enough in the last decade to rank #20 in overall points during that time.

#42: North St. Paul

44.13 pts
--0 state titles
--4 state tournament s

The Polars went to the state tournament four times between 1961-81, finishing fourth place twice and capturing a consolation championship. They haven’t made it past their section semifinals since 1983, but are on the list due to the strength of their state tournament berths.

#41: St. Thomas Academy

44.47 pts
--3 state titles (Class A)
--6 state tournaments (Class A)

The third most successful program in Class A history, here is a little known fact about the Cadets; they were in Class AA for two seasons (1993-95), losing their section quarterfinal game both years. Obviously they have fared far better in Class A, making it to state six times in the past thirteen seasons, taking home the championship hardware three times.

No intent. I was planning on rolling the results out five teams at a time, ending with #1-5 in a week or so. #41 was a stopping point.

Either that, or there was intent. Can't decide, actually.

#40: Roseville

The result of combining Alexander Ramsey and Kellogg in 1986, Roseville made the state tournament in their first season. Two more appearances at State followed, highlighted by a third-place finish in 2002 and a second-place finish the following year. The Raiders have finished under .500 only once in the past 16+ years, and also have ten section finals (3-7) and 22 section semifinals (10-12) to their credit. However, they have failed to reach their section finals in the past eight seasons.

#39: Henry Sibley

--7 state tournaments

Henry Sibley had a strong program in the 70’s and 80’s, making three state tournament appearances over that time and failing to make their section semifinals only three times. Their finest season was in 1983 when they brought home the third-place trophy. This success has fallen off dramatically as of late with their last winning season being in 1998-99.

#38: Irondale

Irondale had the tenth highest point total in this study in the 80’s, due to their consolation championship in 1980 and a second-place finish in 1981. Like Henry Sibley, Irondale has had little recent success and have not made it past the section quarterfinal round since 2000, also the last time they had a winning record.

#37: St. Paul Harding

52.92 pts
--0 state titles
--8 state tournaments

Harding made the Top 10 list in the 50’s (#9) and was the fourth best program in the Twin Cities in that decade. Their finest season was in 1957-58 when they captured second place at State. They also had consecutive trips to State from 1972-74. 1979 marked their final appearance in the state tournament.

#36: Mpls Washburn

53.32 pts
--0 state titles
--6 state tournaments

Washburn was fairly strong from 1945-62, making five trips to state, but only one appearance followed over the next 44 seasons. A runner-up finish in 1959 was the closest this team got to the state championship.

That's about what I thought. STA needs to stay at Class A for at least 6 more years to move into the Top 20. Probably more like 10 because they're not going to win it EVERY year.

#35: Alexander Ramsey

--6 state tournaments

This team was very similar to Washburn with six state appearances and one 2nd place finish. Ramsey ranked #10 in the 70’s when they had three trips to state including making it to the championship game in 1973. Ramsey and Kellogg combined to form Roseville following the 1985-86 season.
