Herb is my idol. Not only was I born and raised in the same neighborhood as Brooks, I also attended the same HS and even drink (to this day) in his favorite bar on the ES.govies wrote:Paul Holmgren...flyers you remember player and coach

Joel Otto from Elk River and Bemidji State. Won the NCAA DII Title in 1984, was the DII Hobey Baker winner in 1984, won the Stanley Cup in 1989 with Calgary and the World Championships in 1996. Also played in the 1998 Olympics.
Mark Messier was often silenced when he went up against Otto.

Yeah, Vogel's isn't anything special but it was Herb's favorite hangout. Definitely the neighborhood can get a little rough in spots over that way for sure.govies wrote:herb also grabbed two back to back ncaa I titles with only homegrown talent..oh yeah he got to wear a silver medal as a plyr from olympic squad and won a gold as a coach and a stanley cup i think..he sent more "mn" plyrs to the pro's than you can omagine..yes sorry it was a bit off topic//housley i dont think grad hs.jumped to pros..guess i am a bit one sided sorry i also grew up in herbs neighbothood..he taught me how to skate....but paul holmgren was a great pro..born in st.paul..not the range..lol..went to harding won on ice and behind bench

One of my best friends went out with Herb's niece for a while. I wish he were still here.
As far as MN tallent goes, I'd like everyone here say that a squad made up of only MN tallent wouldn't have at least challenged for hardware in the Vancouver Games:

You are all forgetting the one player that has had the best NHL career of all the players listed. Bret Hedican could be the best Minnesota player to ever play in the leauge. I would give him my vote. But to some of you he was not a Gopher so he does not count. If you look at his NHL numbers, there is no argument. He is the best!!!!!!!
Are you out of your mind? Ever heard of Phil Housley? Right into the Bigs out of high school. The stories of him going from one end to the other is legendary.Raider Nation Guy wrote:You are all forgetting the one player that has had the best NHL career of all the players listed. I already said previously he's the Gretzky of Minnesota hockey, and I challenge anyone to say otherwise. Was Hedican even on any olympic teams? I think he was on one or two international teams. I'd take Otto over him as far as comparison. Also I'd take Langenbruner over him as well.

Even so, I agree that Housley is obviously the best player the state has ever produced.Bret Michael Hedican (born August 10, 1970) is a retired American professional ice hockey player and a two-time US Olympian.
Also, Frank Brimsek and Moose Goheen are the only Minnesotans currently enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame until Housley is eligible. However, Goheen never played in the NHL. Brimsek won a few Stanley Cups, set a few NHL records, played college hockey in state, and has at least two awards named after him. He's old school and he's not as good as Housley, but he should be part of the discussion.

Gophers wanted him to play football (averaged 10 yards a carry sr season)
6'3"-6'4" 245 lb high schooler that had hands and skating ability of any smaller guys was and still is unheard of. (Calgary)
At the very least he would be a household name in the North American Hockey circle.
I have a friend from high school and more recently a sister in-law that are cousins. The pain runs deep to this day.
