2/5 Saturday SEC Games and Stats

Post by WHAFightingSaints »

Three afternoon starts and two evening games on tap. Let’s start with the biggest game of the day. Records shown are SEC play only.

Stillwater (10-2-2 SEC, 2nd Place) at White Bear Lake (12-0-1 SEC, 1st Place) 2:15 PM A White Bear win or tie will pretty much wrap up the SEC title along with the #2 seed in Section 4. A Stillwater win will make the section seeding interesting but I don’t see the Ponies catching the Bears in the SEC even with a win. White Bear has the tougher remaining conference schedule, but they are up 3 points and have a game in hand, a Pony victory would at least keep things interesting. White Bear comes in on a 10 game unbeaten streak, their last loss coming in late December in the Schwan’s Cup to St. Thomas Academy. The Bears underrated defensive game and goaltending have led the way during their current run, not sure that part of White Bear’s game gets enough credit, they’re giving up less than 2 goals a game. Stillwater’s defense and goaltending receive a lot of credit for the Ponies success and rightfully so, they are holding opponents to just over 2 goals a game, their defenseman are also heavily involved in their offensive game plan as well. Offensive edge goes to White Bear, slight defensive edge to Stillwater, only because of their offensive involvement, goaltending edge to the underrated Schletty. Last game was a 5-1 victory for the Bears, I’ll take the Bears at home in a closer game than their last meeting.

Forest Lake (6-4-4 SEC, 4th Place) at East Ridge (3-11-0 SEC, 9th Place) 3:00 PM Forest Lake is back on the road, which hasn’t been kind to the Rangers of late as they have gone winless in their last 5 road games. Forest Lake’s offense has steadily improved recently with their top two players playing very well of late, their goals per game is creeping up but unfortunately so has their goals against, as they are giving up more goals than they are scoring, not a good formula for winning games. East Ridge is on a 5 game losing streak but seemed to find a little defense in their last two outings. Goaltending was shaky against Roseville, I look for that to improve and Forest Lake to struggle again on the road with the Raptors snapping their losing streak and avenging their earlier 1 goal loss to the Rangers.

Cretin-Derham Hall (6-6-2 SEC, 5th Place) at Mounds View (3-7-4 SEC, 8th Place) 3:00 PM The Raider’s are the toughest team to figure out in the SEC, they have the ability to beat Edina on one night and then can struggle to a tie against Park on another. Just when you think they are getting on a roll they lose to Woodbury in an important Section 3 game last Saturday and then score only 2 goals in a rare low scoring win against Hastings. The good news is they are giving up fewer goals lately; the bad news is they are scoring fewer, with the exception of the combined 14 goals they scored against the two bottom teams recently. Mounds View has now become the lowest scoring team in league averaging 2.75 goals a game, they like many of their SEC counterparts rely on defense and goaltending to keep them in games, however it hasn’t been good enough to win consistently. The Raider’s won the last meeting 6-3, we didn’t have a tie Thursday night so I’ll go with one in this game.

Park-Cottage Grove (0-12-1 SEC, 10th Place) at Woodbury (6-8-0 SEC, 7th Place) 7:30 PM Woodbury is giving up a ton of shots on goal, luckily for the Royals their goaltending has been up to the task and has enabled this team to hover around the .500 mark overall. They are giving up almost 36 shots a game, 10 less than they are getting on net, tough to win with any consistency with those numbers. Park heads to Woodbury on a three game losing streak and back to back shutouts, they have only managed 1 goal in their last 3 outings. Woodbury should keep the Wolpack winless in SEC play.

Roseville (8-4-2 SEC, 2nd Place) at Hastings (7-7-0 SEC, 5th Place) 7:30 PM Roseville has done just enough offensively to beat the 9th and 10th place teams and tie the 8th place team in their last 3 games. The recent favorable schedule has allowed the Raider’s to creep their goals per game up slightly and drop their goals against down to 2.05, second only to White Bear. Roseville’s defensive scheme and outstanding goaltending will be tested tonight against a Hastings team that seems to have Roseville’s number lately. Hastings offense has slowed down with only 3 goals in their last two games, playing Roseville probably won’t help them breakout offensively. Hastings took the last game 3-1, look for a tight low scoring contest to end in what else? A tie!

He had a rough game. He'll bounce back though! He's been solid for the Bears all year.

Cretin came out on top. Seemed like both teams were a bit out of it tonight. Just my view, but I know CDH can do more then they showed.
