Mankato West played flat vs. Century definitely not the team from last week that beat Albert Lea and came close to beating Lourdes. They struggled to breakout at times, resulting in long shifts and icings.
They looked a lot like the West team that lost to Marshall from weeks ago. Consistency in play is going to be vital to sustain with the weeks in the seasons dwindling down.
In terms of what this means for the Big 9, Century has complete control now, winning out will give them the championship. Mayo is still with Century until tomorrow, which the victor will then have control of the Big 9.
Mankato West needs Century to lose one game for them to get back into the hunt. If Century loses to Mayo tomorrow, Mankato West vs. Mayo on the 1st of February is a huge game, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. It'll be interesting to see how this all unravels.

Century also has JM twice.
The West/Century game was just awful, no passing, no shooting, neither team did much but slap the puck around. Century won but the game was pretty even, that's the tough part about 4 point games and probably a big reason the conference went back to 2 point games if you play twice.
As Century has shown in losing to Albert Lea and barely beating Winona and Mayo they're capable of being beaten by almost anyone aside from Austin and East.
JM and Century play outside Saturday morning, that will be intersting and very cold.

Mayo vs. Century is a big game not only for big 9 conference standings but I think even more for section time. Mayo needs to sweep Century for sure and at least split with albert lea and win out the rest to get the 3 seed. That would put them relatively in the top 3 in the big 9 as well. If they don't sweep century then I think Mayo would drop to a 6 seed. As for the big 9 it is still wide open amongst West, Century, Mayo and don't rule out Albert Lea. Yes they would require help down the stretch but they are not out of it. It is becoming pretty evident how these teams survive on the ice for wins. Mayo is probably the best overall defensive team in the big 9 which makes them dangerous every night. West obviousley has the best line in the conference and if you shut it down you will probably beat them. You can't read Century due to them coming different to the rink each game. Sometimes they come to play sometimes they don't. As for Albert Lea simple (Shut down Eric Carlson and you win). I won't even attempt to say who will win the conference but it will be fun to watch the next 3 weeks.
Mayo can't get a 3 seed, losing twice to JM and being pounded by Farmington means Mayo is behind both of them. You can pretty much put the teams in 3 groups and be safe knowing the teams will be there in some order.
#1 #2 - Lakeville N, Lakeville S
#3, #4, #5, Century, Farmington, JM
#6 , #7, #8, #9 Dodge County, Mayo, Owatonna, Winona
If Mayo beats Century twice then Mayo moves to 5 and Century falls to 6 but that should be the only movement possible out of those groups.

goldy you may be right regarding your seeding opinions but if perhaps Mayo wins the big 9 and has a better overall record over farmington it would be hard pressed to put farmington over Mayo even though Farmington won that fluke game. Farmington just lost to RedWing last night and Mayo beat RedWing. Looking at Farmington's schedule they will lose a good handful of games coming up and they will end up well below .500 record. Now JM is a tricky one they would have to take a dump the remainder of the season in order to be below Mayo. However again if Mayo wins the big 9 they could be put up to #3 due to splitting the conference games and only losing to JM in kiwanis in overtime. Don't get me wrong I know there is alot of stock in the head to head matchups though. Farmington however would not belong above Mayo in seedings.
I don't think Mayo beating Century is that big of a suprise, Century hasn't been playing well lately, beating Winona 5-4 and losing at home to Albert Lea. Mayo's biggest problem is finding a way to win the close games and they've done that now twice against 2 rivals the past week.
Itech, overlooking a 8-1 loss will be pretty hard. Now if Mayo wins the Big Nine outright I think the big Nine coaches will seed Mayo #3 but I think it unlikely anyone wins the Big Nine outright this year because between Albert Lea, Century, JM, Mayo, and West there just isn't much seperation.

uh, no
[quote="scarlethockey33"]Mankato West played flat vs. Century definitely not the team from last week that beat Albert Lea and came close to beating Lourdes.
A bit of an overstatement? 3-1 until 4 sec left?? A good game for sure but....

Chances went both ways in that game, West outshot Lourdes in that 3rd but weren't able to cash in til 4 seconds left. West had a huge chance to score with a minute left on a 2 on 1, but the shot backdoor was missed.scarlethockey33 wrote:Mankato West played flat vs. Century definitely not the team from last week that beat Albert Lea and came close to beating Lourdes.

But my point in that comment is that West didn't play even close to the level that they did against those opponents, regardless of the scores they produced.

I listened to the 3rd period and OT of the Owatonna/Century game on KRFO, sounded pretty even to slanted a bit towards Owatonna. Also sounded like te same bugaboo Century has had all season, they get stuck in their zone for extended periods of time, lose track of someone out front and give up a goal. It is a nice win for Owatonna though, no question about that.
All it does for the Big Nine is mean Century no longer controls their own destiny to win the conference while Mayo, West, and Albert Lea still do. It makes their game with Farmington Saturday all that much more important, that's for sure.
With Century, Farmington, and South each at .500, while North, Mayo, Owatonna, and Winona are all under .500. That leaves only 2 teams over .500 in 1AA; Dodge County at 11-5 and JM at 10-8. DC and JM play next Thursday by the way.

The score wasn't indicative of the game, Owatonna controlled play, Century came out flat and were completely on their heels for the first two periods. The Century tender gave up several juicy rebounds but Owatonna wasn't crashing. The third was closer but still tilted for Owatonna.OU812 wrote:Owatonna 2-1 over Century is a final? The Panthers issue is scoring the don't have a go to guy to deliever. Out of there top 4 scorers 3 of them are defensemen and thats not good. Century needs to work hard, create turnovers and get the puck to the net. Sellnow has been good in the net keeping them in striking distance all year expect the White Bear game in which they were never in.
Records don't indicate how good these teams are?? You're kidding right?
South just got beat by 10, they've given up 19 goals their last 2 games and have one 1 win over a top 25 team. North probably won't be above .500 with AV twice, Eagan, South and Burnsville. Mayo needs to go 5-2 to be above .500 at 13-12 and with West, Century, and Albert Lea twice that will be tough.
Their records do a pretty good job of indicating how good these teams are. Dodge County's record is inflated but you could make the same argument about Mayo and Century, what would their records look like if they played either Lakeville schools schedule or if the Lakeville's got to play a Big Nine schedule how much better would their records be?
As for pretty decent teams, Lee has them ranked
#18 South
#45 North
#84 Farmington
#94 JM
#96 Century
#98 Mayo
#105 Dodge Cty
#130 Owatonna
#131 Winona

Hate to say it, but Mayo is extremely underated. The record hurts them for sure, but they have stayed in games against some pretty tough teams. It started back with Lakeville North only losing 3-1. Hibbing 6-5, Virginia 6-4, SSP 3-2. All loses, but a few more bounces here and there and it could've gone the other way. Van Galder is going to be the key the rest of the way. They found some scoring in Alcott, Martin, and Norman to balance out for the lack of production in some games from the first line. The next two games will be key for Mayo.
1-29 @ Albert Lea (make up game)
2-1 vs. Mankato West
If they win those two there's a good chance of them landing the 3rd seed with the easy schedule the rest of the way other than Albert Lea and maybe Century if they pick it up again.
