Hats

Post by GoWild »

When fans throw hats on the ice because of a hat trick, is it a penalty for a player on the ice to take one of the hats?

Seriously?

Umm, no...

It's called stealing. Breaks the Ten Commandments (thou shalt not steal), the law (petty theft), but nothing in hockey.

Can't foreseeing the ref calling a bench minor nor a unsportsmanlike conduct as well; its not their problem.

Stealing? Well if you don't want someone to take your hat then don't throw it on the ice. Which btw is very unsportsmanlike in my opinion.

When you take something that is not yours, it is called stealing.

The act of throwing your hat on the ice when a player scores a hat trick is a common norm within the game of hockey. Its a universal, exciting tradition.

I have worked the penalty box before. When the Refs pick up the hats and bring them to the box , most of them are so dirty and stinky with sweat. PEW.

Same. We give them back to the fans that want their hat back, and the abandoned ones are thrown in the trash.

I've not thrown a hat on the ice due to the fact it was a nice new one. I will only throw an old stinky hat should the opportunity present itself.

Funny hat trick story (kind of): I enjoy a great deal of high school hockey, last year I was up watching Andover play (I think vs. Anoka). I went to watch Cal Decowski play as he started getting some serious D1 cred. However, the star of the show ended up being Taylor Portner with a stunning 6 goal performance. (YES, six goals) I've never seen such a feat above maybe squirt level. Anyways, the student section decided to dub this a "shoe" trick and all tossed their shoes on the ice.

I remember the game well and it was amazing. The game was actually against Champlin Park (not Anoka) and Taylor ended up with 7 points 6 goals and an assist (the team scored a total of 8 so he factored in all but one goal).

One more point, thowing objects on the ice is grounds for removal from most rinks...but that is usually not what happens.

On BSM's home rink, hats thrown on the ice are collected, refurbished, and sold on ebay. Money collected here is spent on airfare for recruiting trips.

On Edina's home ice, hats are never thrown--as no one in the stands has the arm strength to clear the glass.

Not for throwing a hat on the ice, but for throwing other items on the ice and for being total idiots.....

I think its a penelty if you are playing in Forest Lake, and the object is a drink instead of a hat being thrown on to the ice! #-o #-o
