Take the four best programs from the Arrowhead: Cloquet, Duluth East, Grand Rapids and Hermantown. Bring in four good teams from North Dakota, Wisconsin, or some Eastern Prep teams. Anothr option would be to take three Arrowhead teams and three others in a round-robin tournament. That would be much more interesting.

I like that. Maybe do a 2 division round robin with each team playing 3 games. Take the top 2 from each division for a 4 game playoff. The only problem this might be is that the two teams in the championship would play 5 games which is probably more than most coaches want.east hockey wrote:I'd like to see these eight teams:
East
Central (will be Denfeld starting next season)
Cloquet
Marshall
Hermantown
Grand Rapids
Hibbing
Virginia
Lee
Outstanding! Wonder if they can pull off something like this...would love to see it and would be MORE than interested in covering that tourney.hshockeyfan53 wrote:I like that. Sounds like everyone would like the old Region 7 Tournament format from the 60's. The Range teams would play down to four teams and the Duluth teams would play down to four teams. Each group would be seeded and Range 1 would play Duluth 4, Range 2 would play Duluth 3 and so on. The arenas were packed an hour before the games started. It was a blast.
Will never happen because Duluth East will never play Hermantown or Duluth Marshall!! Hermantown invited them to play on Hockey Day Mn last year in the outside game but East declined. Nice to see that EP wasn't "beyond" playing a lowly single A team. And they are even willing to schedule Herm now.greenway1969 wrote:Sounds like everyone would like the old Region 7 Tournament format from the 60's. It took us 7 posts for someone to mention this!Northhcky wrote:Will never happen because Duluth East will never play Hermantown or Duluth Marshall!! Must be a new record. This board is getting far too civil.

Interesting that the DNT article says East applied for entry to the LSC before last year, but got rejected.
You're correct there is not a chance of them participating or playing those teams, for sure until after next season. They're certainly not going to give up the Schwan tournament playing Edina, Hill Murray, etc to stay at home to play Denfeld, Hibbing, etc. Their record speaks for itself and they are not required to play a goodwill game with anyone just because they're local. As evidenced with the recent Central/Denfeld game, why would a team want to put themselves through that again?Northhcky wrote:Will never happen because Duluth East will never play Hermantown or Duluth Marshall!! Denfeld doesn't have the balls to step up to AA, I guess now we know why.
Having said that it could be a fun tournament among those teams noted, but only without the whining that DE won't be there.
yawn should never happen and more than likely will never happen, lets look at some reasons behind it...
1. the obvious, duluth east refuses to play hermantown, another example of this was last years minnesota hockey day outdoor game was SUPPOSE to be hermantown vs. D.E. and D.E. refused to play
2. hermantown had a holiday tournament and then got rid of it to play somewhere else
3. traveling tournaments create team chemistry, staying at home does not
4. why not just keep it as hermantown vs. duluth east?

Interesting comments as always, I would guess the Twin Cities Christmas tourney is locked in for East and would never be changed. Opportunity to generally play 3 very strong teams, as well as an opportunity for East to skate at the Excel. Even if you dont win the section planning on it and getting game experience in that arena is a strategy Randolph likes to use. Maybe this is the year where they go beyond the first game at State in the Excel.
As far as playing the local teams East doesnt have a lot to lose on the short term as far as not playing Hermantown and Marshall but I do believe playing these teams would help create rivalries that would increase interest and participation in hockey in the local area. Thus long term rewards would be there.
East in my opinion missed an opportunity last year by turning down the opportunity to play in the Hockey Day in Minnesota. That could have been a great deal as they could have played Hermantown created great local buzz and been able to commit to play for a couple of more years and not have to add anyone else if they chose not to.
Local rivalries would be great, but I dont totally think Randolph is wrong by not scheduling Hermantown and Marshall, maybe both these teams could go AA and then we would have one of the greatest competitive sections in the State. Oh well the trophy collectors move on.
As far as a local Holiday tournament your attendance expectations are way to high. The biggest and only draws would be Duluth East vs Hermantown and Marshall. If you had Virginia vs Duluth East you would not draw 1000. Hermantown vs Marshall in a tourney maybe 1500.
