Need to address a long-standing and major annoyance

Post by brandy38 »

So there are a lot of users on this forum with a lot of different pet peeves. I have only one, and it is hockey players who register to this forum, get usernames like 34titan (or any other number-mascot combination...this one's made up) and ask loaded questions like, "How do the sophomores look for Tartan this year?," expecting that to open a magical portal to complements. Sometimes, they'll take the more direct approach: "John Doe is really flying under the radar this year for Tartan...any Division I offers for him/how does he look/is he junior material?" Further, users like this will even try to promote their team shamelessly, even if doing so makes them look like paint chips is their favorite snack: "idk about STA placing 2nd this year in the classic suburban. I like Tartan's chances of finishing second better."

What a bunch of crap this is!! Memo to the kids who do this: The best (and really only way) to tell that you're elite material is if you're mentioned unsolicited by a member of the forum that has no familial or personal relationship to you, better yet if they have no interest in the team you play for. If you're good enough, eventually you'll be mentioned no matter where you're from. Even a North Branch goalie was the talk of the town in a few threads last season. End of story gongshows!!

Disclaimer: The above post was not intended to implicate Tartan players of doing this. I used Tartan as an example because I suddenly remembered one incredibly overconfident user from Tartan who had a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease when Tartan was upset by Johnson in the playoffs a couple of years ago.

If anyone who posts in this forum believes this, they are taking themselves way too seriously.

I have received two scholarship offers from postings in this forum. If you don't hype yourself who will?

Brandy-its a "fan" forum and they come from different communities in all shapes, sizes, ages, view points and they have different interests that they want to talk about. The sooner you understand this and except it, the sooner you will no longer be annoyed.

^ OK that's a fair point, and I can understand where some of these kids come from (they're bored, want to see some recognition for their hard work, etc.), but when this happens a lot, it gets very mindless and tiresome. Self-aggrandizement bothers the hell out of me, and really doesn't fit with hockey either as it's played by some of the most humble athletes around.

And cooper: "elite material" was a poor choice of words. I should have just said "worthy of mention."

Do you want to know what's worse? Writing about a goalie from North Branch that I would bet my life has no idea this forum exists. Yes, I was one of the ones that commented about him, like you have about Woodbury kids, but he earned every positive comment he received. Do you think he made it to New York with the other 99 top US prospects from comments on this forum? I sure hope you're not a grown man!

Should we start to write that EVEN a Woodbury kid was talked about now that they're on a downward trend?

Go meet the kid sometime..... You won't find a nicer or more polite kid around.

You're missing the point. The 1/100 of 1% of MN Hockey parents represented on this board do not define "worthiness" either. People talk about who they want to talk about. Some talk about themselves. Whatever. If you're not interested, don't respond.

This entire forum consists of people - parents, players, fans, coaches, etc. - who voice their opinions. You have to take everything with a grain of salt because everything on this board is essentially opinion. Supporters of one team will plug their team over another, and supporters of the other team will do likewise.

As you mentioned, good players will get noticed, they don't need this forum. So sure, kids that plug themselves on this forum can be annoying, but does it really change anything? If they're good enough to get noticed, they'll get noticed regardless of this forum. If they're not good enough to get a look, then posting on this forum isn't going to change that.

The best advice is just to ignore what irritates you.

This could be the dumbest post of all time! Now that I responded, does that make you feel ELITE. :P

brandy... I've heard this complaint before and I don't think it's that big of a deal... If they're soliciting comments and get some positive feedback, good for them... if they get a resounding thud, then they know they've got to work harder :)

...maybe you shouldn't take life so seriously!

You misunderstood me. I used Miska as a positive example, not a negative one. Look at the preceding sentence that I put in bold font. That should provide sufficient context.

I have a lot of patience in general, but finals time has shortened my fuse. My sole point is this: If you're skills stand out from the crowd, you'll be recognized for them on the forum without fishing for complements. I feel that if I simply wrote that for my original post in place of what's already there, I wouldn't have been flamed to a crisp  thanks for the gutcheck.

I don't mind the people or players who do this, it is obvious when they do and it is a free forum. Actually I think it is cool that this forum exists. Most people (my wife, sister) who know that I am on here think I'm lame. I do not care because I like hockey, high school in particular.
Probably the funniest "fishing" threads that occured in my opinion was last winter. The guy that was from some overcrouded sess pool out east who first started a thread slamming Holy Angels about their trip out there. THis turned into the typical "who's hockey is better" debate. All of this was OK. When it got funny was when he took a different username like "minnesota1" or something obviously Minnesotan and tried bragging up Eastern hockey as one of us....the only problem was that it was so obvious, calling the state tournement, "states" and using other eastern words....

Brandy nailed it right on the head - 99% of the time, the one going around blowing their own horn is usually the least deserving. If they put that much effort into playing hockey, they'll probably get noticed.

In other words: Don't tell me what you can do - show me ! Its very simple.

I get annoyed when less than elite posters come on here and try to toot their own horn.
