Burnsville-5
Rosemount- 4
After 2 15 minute periods, Burnsville led 4 to 0 while having killed 6 penalties. In both periods each team generated numerous scoring opportunities.
The 3rd period was 30 minute runnning time period. Burnsville used the period to mix it's lines and forwards and defensemen, Rosemount capitalized on this with 4 goals. Burnsville was able to tally one goal in the period and salvage the win.
Overall, a fast paced game by two solid teams.

Score from Saturday Oct. 30

Burnsville-5
Rosemount-4

Burnsville had a 2 hour block of ice and chose to “warm-up” by running a full rink practice for the first half hour and play a 90 minute game. The first period started well for the Blaze as they jumped in front in the first three minutes on a nifty pass to the front of the goal and a quick shot. They kept the pressure on Rosemount and scored at the 5 minute mark when the Irish goalie chased a puck too far and the Blaze rotated the puck to the weak side and scored on an open net to go up 2-0.

A minute later, two Blaze forwards broke the Irish defense and scored on a 2-1 rush. In the first period, the Blaze were quicker than the Irish forwards and the Irish defense had difficulty holding the offensive zone. Burnsville led 3-0 at the end of the first despite drawing three penalties.

The Irish defense contributed to the Blaze fourth goal in the opening minute of the second period by failing to move the puck giving it up to a Blaze forward in front of the Irish goal who lifted it into the net over a sprawling goalie. After that goal, the game became ragged as the Blaze took two more penalties and the Irish one.

With a minute to go, the Irish got on the scoreboard on nice short passing play the ended with an Irish forward crossing the net at the top of the crease and backhanding the puck past the goalie. In the last half of the second period, the Blaze slowed as the extra pre-game practice began to affect the players. The Blaze kept the 4-1 lead by riding their goalie who had an outstanding game. The second period ended 4-1.

After two stop time 15 minute periods, the third period went to a 30 minute running time with 2 minute penalties. But the real question was "would the Blaze last"? With a scrambling defense and strong goalie play, the Blaze held on in the third until the 20 minute mark when Rosemount scored their second on a breakaway.

The Irish added a third goal a minute later when the puck bounced off the goalies pads to a Rosemount forward who quickly put the puck in the net. Four minutes later two Rosemount forwards broke into the Blaze zone with the puck on the wing. The wing hit the other Irish forward in the slot with a great pass. The puck was deflected into the goal to tie the game.

Things look bleak for the Blaze, but a minute later a Rosemount forward foolishly delivered a hard hit to a Blaze defense in neutral zone. The puck was not within 15 feet of the defenseman. With ten seconds left in the Irish penalty, the Blaze scored on a partially screened goalie to take a 5-4 lead. In the last 10 minutes the Blaze held on playing defense just good enough to let their goalie do his job and shut down the Irish. He ended up with 22 saves (my count) in the third period.

It was a fun game for so early in the season. There were minutes of good play followed by minutes of ragged play. Both associations have good peewee A teams and should compete well in their districts. Both teams are balanced and showed that they can play hard, smart, hockey.

Edina-3
Wayzata-1

Well people, Edina is truly #1. Wayzata is still short the 1 injured stud (back in next week or so), but Edina just outhustled/muscled/efforted Wayzata tonight. My guess is if they played 10X's, Edina wins 7/10. But... it's still only October.

Happy Halloween, 2010
Scores from today:

Moundsview-1
Eagan-0

Long before the NHL expanded and hockey players signed from all over the world, there were six teams, three Canadian based teams and three US based teams. In the 1950’s (the whole decade), few US players played in the league.

Ken Yackel was one of a half dozen US players who did. In 1973, St. Paul built a number of arenas and chose to build one in West St. Paul not far from outdoor ice rink where Ken skated. The arena was called the Westside arena until 20 years later; then the name was changed to Ken Yackel Westside Arena.

On a gorgeous sunny morning on this October fall day, Eagan hosted Moundsview at the Ken Yackel arena. The arena seems “old school, cookie cutter” type of an arena. Four walls to keep out the cold, small set of stands on one side, team rooms and on the end, a place for the fans to warm themselves and dressing rooms for the teams. Not fancy, but today, it was a nice setting.

Moundsview jumped to a 1-0 lead and held on to win over a scrappy Eagan team. The Mustangs applied most of the pressure. Eagan held them at bay, but could not mount a counter attack. The Wildcats skated better in the latter part of the game; the Mustangs played a typical tough style of game. It was a clean game with few penalties.

With the game over, I headed toward the heights overlooking the Mississippi to the Capital View Café for a good Tex Mex breakfast.

Woodbury-5
White Bear Lake-1

Later in the afternoon, White Bear Lake hosted Woodbury at the White Bear Sports Center. The Woodbury Predators (the Woodbury Association has changed the name from Royals to Predators this year in hopes of accommodating East Ridge High Raptors with a non-high school name) took the ice in their new mostly black uniforms and quickly established themselves as the dominant team.

The Predators took the lead in the first minute of play on shot from the top of the right face off circle that found a gap between the goalie and the post. They added two more goals in the period with the last goal scored by a Woodbury forward sprawling around a checking Bear defenseman and driving the puck past the Bear goalie from a tough angle. The first period ended 3-0.

In the second period action was slowed in part by penalties called on both teams. White Bear Lake became opportunists countering Woodbury’s rushing defense men and beating them to the outside to set up solo and 2 on 1 rushes deep in the Woodbury zone only to be stopped by the Woodbury goalies. The second period ended 3-0.

That set up a key sequence at the start of the third period. Catching the Predator defense attacking, the Bears had two point blank shots on the goalie but could not put the puck in the net. A Woodbury forward at the 14 minute mark broke down the Bear defense and slammed the puck through a crack in the goalie to make the score 4-0.

The best play of the game came at the 6 minute mark. Picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone, a big Predator forward fended off a couple of Bear defense men, shot, took the rebound behind the net, fended off two more Bear defense men to turn from behind the net to get off a one-handed shot. The shot bounced of the goalie’s pad and landed in the crease behind the goalie. The big forward with one last effort as he was falling got the stick on the puck and put it in the net, 5-0.

But White Bear Lake was not done. The Bears kept playing, scoring on a power play at the 4 minute mark after breaking down the Woodbury defense and banging away at the Predator goalie from the top of the crease to make the score 5-1. If hockey was scored like boxing, the game would have been a draw, first period to Woodbury, second period a draw, and third period to the Bears. Both teams are tough.

The Bear team looks a lot like the Bear team from last year this early in the season. At the end of the season, that team ended up scaring Edina in the state tourney quarterfinals before losing to the Hornets.

Woodbury forwards look to be among the best in the state having size and skill. Their goalies had a great game and contributed to the win. Both teams should be in the top of their districts. Woodbury, in part because of the regional draw they have this year, is one of my early season picks to make the state tourney.

Thief River Falls 5
Detroit Lakes 2
3 17 min periods with refs. Both teams, I believe, making final team selections after game/scrimmage. Both teams had 75% of their players playing football and coming off one week of tryouts.

Funny...I was there & couldn't tell you. I did notice the big guy in warm ups and want to say he played. Seems most teams in these early games split 1/2 way through.

Score from Monday, Nov. 1

Hudson-3
Highland Central-1

My grandkids skated in North St. Paul spring league with and against a bunch of Edgcumbe kids. Edgcumbe proudly trumpets they are an affordable hockey program and plays youth hockey outside. The Edgcumbe parents were the loudest fans at those spring games and the most numerous.

Maybe it is because Edgcumbe parents live in the shadow of the Charles Schultz arena in St. Paul. The Peanuts author and cartoonist came from St. Paul and when he became famous and successful in California, he built his own office, as a hockey rink. He would draw his strip in an office overlooking the ice and loved to skate. He played hockey into his seventies.

Somehow, it all fits. Whenever I visit the Charles Schultz arena, I always see kids everywhere, not just hockey players, doing things. Tonight, among the kids, I saw a little girl crawling under a ribbon that protected a Snoopy statue to pet Snoopy toe. Edgcumbe, Schultz, Snoopy’s toe, and kids hockey all seem to fit.

Fitting also was the fact that two teams new to D2 would open their D2 season playing each other. Highland left D1 and Hudson left D8 to play in D2 this year. After a ragged start in the first period, the teams put on quite a show. The first 12 minute period was penalty marred. Six penalties were called, four on Highland. A Hudson player had to sit because his mouth guard was not attached to his helmet.

Hudson put on tremendous pressure in the first period around the net and boxed the Capitals in their own zone. They finally scored at the 2 minute mark when the puck, rebounding from a third or fourth shot, slid wide to the goalie’s left and was shot into an open net. First period ended 1-0.

Hudson’s goalie took over at the start of the second period. Highland applied pressure for most the period and kept the Hudson defense scrambling. With 4 minutes to go, the Raiders drew a penalty and 10 seconds later the Caps scored from the point on a partially screened goalie.

But with 30 seconds to go in the period, a Raider forward made a simple, nifty play. Picking the puck up in the offensive zone along the boards, he took a step toward the net and drew a Caps defenseman toward him and slid a soft touch pass to another breaking forward who took the puck on a free path to the net scoring on a hard shot from the slot. The pass traveled maybe a foot. Good teamwork.

That goal set the Caps back. For the first half of the third period, Hudson continually applied pressure. Then the game became an up and down ragged affair until Highland drew a penalty at the 3 minute mark. Twenty seconds later, a big hard charging Raider defense man picked a loose puck up in the neutral zone, skated to and around the net and jammed the puck by the Caps goalie. Out of frustration, late in the game, a Caps forward slashed a Raider’s stick and drew a penalty that cost the Caps their “unfair play” point. The game ended before he could reach the penalty box.

Both teams are tough skating and in this game they showed that they will be at or near the top of D2 at the end of the season. The teams will meet again Dec 12 in Hudson. Hudson has some outstanding defense men.

Frederick: I'm 42 and I remember going from the Western suburbs to Edgecumbe for an outdoor game when I was a first-year Squirt. Great to hear they still have some outdoor hockey.

Rosemount 3
Edina 2

Played at IGH on Tuesday night...only caught the first period and got final update after the game was complete. The period I saw was very fast paced...lots of good hitting, and evenly played. Those will be two fun teams to watch this upcoming season.

In the Edina/Rosemount game tonight, the Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period (3-15 minute stop time periods were played) only to have the Irish tie the score on 1-1 on a neat passing play from behind the net to a open Irish wing camped on the crease. The goalie had no chance to make the stop. The first period was well played by both teams with end to end action.

In the second period, the faster Irish forwards began to out race and out maneuver the Edina defense. The Hornets were fortunate to get away with some hooking and “pull downs” without penalties as the Irish players sped past.

Then the Hornets got a lucky marginal tripping call (Irish player lifted a Hornet’s stick of the ice to gain control of the puck and the Hornet fell) and a strange play where a penalty was called when an Irish forward handed the goalie his stick after he had lost it. That gave the Hornets a 5 on 3 advantage. The Hornets finally banged the puck in 30 seconds later to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.

Four minutes into the third period, Rosemount tied the score when an Irish forward picked the puck up inside the Edina blue line, beat the defense swinging wide to the goalies left and fed his wing on the right in front of the goal for an easy score. Two minutes later, the Irish scored from the point when the shot hit the goalie’s leg pad and caromed up at an awkward angle into the upper inside corner of the net. Tough shot, tough goal.

The Hornets came alive in the last 5 minutes of the game, finally gaining control of the puck inside the Rosemount zone. They kept pressure on the Rosemount goalie and he kept the puck out of the net. The game ended 3-2.

Last Saturday, the Irish could not beat the Burnsville defense and lost. Four days later, the Irish forwards consistently beat the Hornet defense. Logic says Burnsville will be tough on the Hornets in D6. But this peewee hockey and no one really knows what will happen. Its kids playing a game, so fans relax. It’s hard to do. I know. But it is a fun thing to watch these kids play.

That's impressive. I honestly thought Edina would roll over them. Good job Rosemount!
