Some additional scores from Sunday Oct 17.

Shakopee-2
Hopkins-1

Regular scrimmage with refs, penalties and three periods (12 minute stop time). Both teams showed they will be competitive. Shakopee has some good forwards. Hopkins has a good defense.

Shakopee scored first to take a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period. The goal was a pretty passing play. It was scored on a tip in when a trailing forward broke free of the defense, skated at the goalie drawing the goalie over and then hitting the leading forward directly ahead of him as soon as the goalie moved.

The Sabres survived a two man down penalty at the start of the second and took a 2-0 deep into the third period before the Royals scored. Two evenly matched teams playing fairly solid hockey early in the season.

Prior Lake-6
Roseville-3

That was the score at the end of three 16 minute stop time periods (A fourth period was starting when I left). Regular game with refs and penalties. Roseville jumped to a 3-1 lead in the first period, but sagged in the second allowing Prior Lake to tie the game 3-3. The Raiders tired in the third giving up three goals.

A good skated game between two teams that will be tough in this season. Prior Lake has a tough defense, Roseville has speed in the forwards.

A footnote to the Wayzata/Blaine game. I left at "half time", the end of two long stop time periods with the score 3-1. Blaine scored first, Wayzata scored their first goal on a deflected shot from behind the net and a tap in. The Trojans got a quick goal at the start of the second period on another tap-in. Though penalties were called and players sat in the penalty box, the teams skated five players at all times.

Sounds like that EP stillwater game was a good one. I'm thinking the stillwater kids are the team to beat in d2.[White bear got thumped by Blaine.

A score from Saturday, Oct 23.

Burnsville-10
St. Louis Park-0

These two teams played each other in the East Regional Tourney last year-that is they sort of played each other. The Blaze returned four players from that team and St. Louis Park returned two players from that game representing the “Park” side of the Mpls Park team. Mpls Park is no more, at least for this season. They are now the Mpls Storm and St. Louis Park.

Burnsville jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead against Park. The Blaze scored the first goal on a solo breakaway, beating the defense to the outside and the goalie to the far corner. They quickly added two more quick goals, but not without suffering a few moments of panic when Park’s speedy forwards broke down their defense three times in the opening minutes. The first period ended 4-0.

In the opening minutes of the second period, Burnsville drew coincidental minors followed by a 10-minute boarding call. Down two men, a Burnsville forward broke through the defense and slid a puck under the goalie’s pads for a fifth goal. The period ended 6-0 but it was a fairly evenly played period with Park having more than one chance to score.

A tired Park defense gave up four goals in the third. Both teams have potential. Burnsville has some size this year and has added strength to go with the experience of the four returnees that should enable the Blaze to compete against the Edinas and Eden Prairies in the tough D6 district. Park will be playing in an equally tough D3 this year. Though they lost big tonight, they have the wheels to compete and one of the better players in the state.

Score from Sunday afternoon, Oct 24th.

Farmington-4
Roseville-2

The game was a fast paced between two good teams. Refs showed and two 12 minute stop time periods were played followed by 22 minutes running time. The Raiders jumped to a 1-0 lead early in the opening period when a Raider forward caught the Farmington goalie on his knees and lifted the puck over the goalie’s right shoulder into the net. The Tigers came back to tie the score early in the second period when a Tiger forward lifted a puck over the Roseville goalie's shoulder (also on his knees), scoring with the same shot, same net, and same corner. The second period ended 1-1.

After two high paced, well skated, entertaining periods, the third period slowed. Early in the third period, the Tigers moved ahead 2-1 on a power play goal when the Raider defense allowed a Tiger defenseman to walk in from the point, set up, and drive the puck past the goalie. Five minutes later, the Tigers returned the favor when their defense failed to clear the puck, allowed the Raiders to box them in their zone while Roseville changed lines, and then failed to cover as a fresh Raider forward picked up a loose puck in the slot and drove it past the goalie. Game tied 2-2.

Neither team could sustain pressure for the next 10 minutes, but one of the best plays occurred on a Raider breakout play. With a Raider wing in control of the puck on the side board in neutral ice and another Raider forward breaking between the two Farmington defensemen, the far defenseman showed patience and knowledge of the game as he skated with the breaking Raider forward until the pass came into his possession area, then physically checked him off the puck and turned the play. If he had not had the sense to time the play right, it would have been a sure penalty at a critical point in the game or a clean Roseville breakaway.

A few minutes later, a Farmington forward picked up a loose puck in the slot and scored to take a 3-2 lead. Late in the game, the Tigers added a fourth goal on a breakaway. Two good teams played a good game, especially good since it was so early in the season.

Score from Thursday, Oct 28.

Sibley-4
Moundsview-3

Sibley opened the scoring at the 9:00 mark of the first period on a shot from the slot past the right shoulder of a partially screened goalie. Moundsview countered four minutes later on a shot that deflected off a player in front of the net and off the toe of the goalie just inside of the far corner of the net to tie the score 1-1. The Mustangs moved ahead when a tough Mustang wing refused to be bodied off the puck, hung on until he could feed another Mustang sitting on the far side of the crease who drove it into a wide open net. The first period ended with the Mustangs leading 2-1.

The second period was dominated by the Mustangs as they tied up the Generals in their own zone. They gave the Generals few scoring chances in the second, but couldn’t beat the scrambling General defense. No goals were scored.

In the third, at the 8 minute mark, a Moundsview forward picked up a loose puck along the boards, broke down the Sibley defense and shot from the left face off circle that trickled through the goalie’s 5-hole. Up 3-1, it looked like the game was over. Sibley threats were constantly checked off the puck and the Generals could not sustain an offense. With less than a minute to go, a General finally broke the Mustang defense slid the puck past a sprawling goalie. Sibley pulled their goalie and fifteen seconds later, scored the tying goal off a scrum in front of the Mustang goal. In the last 40 seconds of the game, Sibley scored twice to put the game into OT. Two minutes into the OT, they scored the winning goal off another scrum.

It is a young season and it showed. Both coaches skated everybody fairly evenly giving all their players opportunities to play the game.
