returning players? How we know

What is used for determining if a player is returning to the high school hockey team he played for the previous year. When is the player no longer eligible to return to his team. I know graduation is one. What are the other reasons. Does playing in an elite league make them ineligible, does playing in the USHL or junior leagues make them ineligible. Please share your knowledge.

With one qualifier.... I think I read somewhere that they must stay enrolled at their current high school. If they go off to, say, Des Moines and attend school there then move back home, they are considered a transfer student under the rule the MSHSL put in last year.

I'm not sure but I don't think that there is any rule making players sit out if they transfer in from a non-minnesota school.

I think you have a specific player in mind and you're just not telling us. I'll try to answer as best as I can based on your extremely confusing question.

In the past, players have been DRAFTED by NHL teams before they're done with high school (Aaron Marvin, for example). However, as far as I can tell, none of them have ever signed an NHL contract and then played Minnesota HS hockey. There would be no reason to, as you're expected to play professionally immediately after signing a professional contract. Players signing professional (Major Junior) contracts while ATTENDING high school classes happens all the time in Canada, but none of them has ever quit Major Juniors in order to play Minnesota HS hockey.

As for college, the only thing you sign is a "Letter of Intent"... which basically means that you accept the scholarship to play for that school. And yes, you can sign a "Letter of Intent" in the fall of your senior year and still play Minnesota HS hockey.

Ah, now THAT makes sense. Actually, I'm the guy keeping track of the "not coming back" list. I know these players aren't coming back because they show up on other rosters. It's difficult to play hockey in Michigan or Iowa and still participate in MN High School hockey. My sources are my own eyes (seeing their name on another roster) or reports from posters/people with a reputation for accuracy.

The players listed are not coming back then. But what about players who are playing for elite teams, or were drafted in the NHL draft. What about those players. Just trying to pick the mind of a great hockey fan.

The only two drafted NHL ers with high school elgibilty is Marshall and Lane. Marshall is confirmed at Omaha, though one wonders with his recent injury, will he continue high school at Mahtomedi until he is ready to play? What if his injury delays him comming back till Janurary, would he then finish out the high school season and then move on to the Lancers when he is physical sure he is ready.

Lane was at the Force tryouts, though I have not seen any confirmation that he made the 25 man roster, but I did not see his name on a elite league roster. Has anyone seen the Force 2010-11 roster yet?

It is still possible for any of the high school age players on a 25 man roster or affilate to show up at there respective USHL team camp and announce thier committment shortly there after, as most high schools start the end of August or first week in September.

It sounds like the most logical choice for Tanner Lane will be to play for the Fargo Force This fall. Playing for Detroit Lakes won't be nearly as helpful down the road as playing in the USHL. Below is an article with more feedback on Lane.
