They don't. Not sure 'why'. Minnesota also uses a different cutoff date, enforces game limits, doesn't participate in nationals, and has zip code hockey where you have to play where you live.

Those running Minnesota Hockey are looking out for the best interests of their members. People may not agree with their method, but clearly their intentions are good.

Selecting a few handfuls of some players at such a young age, too young to be a solid predictor of NCAA or NHL success, is just not a priority matter. Nobody will be 'held back' by not participating...look at how many Minnesotans are selected in the first round of the NHL Draft each year.

Rather than invest so much into the development process of a dozen or so kids, Minnesota Hockey worries aboutthe broad base.

You can disagree with whether this is what you would do, but there is thought that goes into it. Look at how many threads challenge the Select 15 selection process. At some point it makes you want to throw up your arms and say enough.

To coincide with the principles of the American Development Model, which focuses on age-appropriate training based on long-term athlete development, USA Hockey’s Board of Directors voted to discontinue the 12 & Under National Championships at the Tier I and II levels starting with the 2012-13 season.

USA Hockey promotes a broad base of development – the goal is to support a world-leading, age-specific, long-term athlete development model.

Imagine that. USA Hockey is taking a page from Minnesota Hockey!
