Missota is an 8 team conference so you use (2x7) 14 games out of your 25 game total for conference play. This leaves those teams with a tournament and then 8 non-conference games. If the Big 9 (10 teams) did this they would need (2x9) 18 games for conference play leaving only one tournament and then just 4 non-conference games. Big 9 used to allow teams to play a single 4 point game if they chose that option. Playing with their current format, they can have a tournament and 13 non-conference games. Some teams like Owatonna and Mayo appear to have gone with a tougher schedule. Mankato West has a moderate non-conference schedule.

I have not been home much this winter to see too many games but I have watched RW, Farmington and Shakopee of Missota and they are good teams. Looking at records I'd say that NP, Holy Angels, Northfield and Hutch are not real strong this year. In the Big 9 the stronger teams are Owatonna, Faribault, Mayo, Mankato West with Winona flying under the radar. The two conferences look pretty similar to me.

Head to Head games among/including the upper teams of each conference:
Mayo 5 Owatonna 3
Owatonna 4 Farmington 3
Mayo 1 Farmington 1
Rosemount 4 Farmington 3 - Rosemount is middle of the pack in the Lake Conference
Rosemount 4 Mayo 3
Farmington 4 Red Wing 1
Farmington 5 Red Wing 4
Red Wing 5 Faribault 1
Mayo 7 Faribault 4
Faribault 3 Mayo 2
Mankato W 2 Mayo 1
Owatonna 2 Mankato W 1
Faribault 5 Mankato W 1
Mankato W 9 Hutchinson 5
Mankato W 2 Holy Angels 0
Red Wing 4 Holy Angels 3
Red Wing 6 Holy Angels 1
Comparing these scores I would say that the top 4 team of the two conferences are pretty equal. I would speculate that Austin, JM/L and Albert Lea could compete with Hutch, H/A and Northfield.

Northfield Austin and Albert Lea would be a tight choice so I am deferring to the QRF rankings for those three.

1.Red Wing
2.Faribault
3.New Prague
4.Northfield
5.Austin
6.Albert Lea
7.Waseca

Looks like Redwing should get the bye. First round eliminations will be too close to call between 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5, no matter how they are seeded!

I would agree on the seedings. However, NP will have no problems with A.L., or Austin, in the first round. They will be playing FBO in the 2nd round, which will be a good matchup, but FBO will be able to solve NP's goalie. Redwing will walk whomever they play in the Second round.

Red Wing/ Fbo in the Finals. Fbo took it on the chin last game, but will be ready to play in the Finals. Fbo 5-RW 4 in the final.

This is what I heard:
1. Red Wing
2. Faribault
3. New Prague
4. Northfield
5. Austin
6. Albert Lea
7. Waseca

Assuming the 2-4 teams take care of business, my prediction for the Red Wing Northfield game is 4-1 in favor of Red Wing but the Faribault and New Prague will be interesting... goalies in sections are very dangerous. Hopefully Faribault can come out on top but if they can't score, and the Faribault goalie isn't on top of her game like she sometimes isn't, New Prague could win.

I also heard a rumor Bergland is out for a seperated shoulder?
That will also play a big role in who will win.

New Prague (3 seed) lost at home to Albert Lea (6 seed) 2-1 and Northfield (4 seed) beat Austin (5 seed) 2-1

Albert Lea played well, NP wasn't moving their feet except for beginning of 3rd period. It was 1-1 until the last couple minutes when AL got a break away on a broken up soft pass across middle. NP tripped girl when she was already clear and refs correctly called penalty shot, AL scored.

Brooke Bartelt scored only goal for NP on nice slap shot, Sletta with 35 saves on 37 shots.

NP was ranked higher but has been outshot in many of their wins this year, so I figured it would be a tight game. A.L. vs. Faribault in next round.

Faribault will be fine. Offense is not what worried me about NP, they can't generate much, it was their goalie getting hot. A.L.'s goalie is a good young goalie, but small and Fbo will score 5 or 6 on A.L., who can't muster that much offense against Fbo.

Score will be 5-2 Fbo.

NP is more of a defensive team they give up most of the shots come from the outside, giving their strong goalie a chance, Ms. Bartelt is a very good D and gets lots of playing time does a great job clearing the net area, she will be missed next year.

It wasn't a BIG upset, btw. Although there was a Twinnesota sighting! :P

Nope, no gag order (at least not that I know of anyway). I just realized that it didn't matter what I "had" to say  and I finally realized that the only thing that did matter was my daughter having fun. Winning, losing, coaching  ...At the end of the day - does it really matter? Probably not, so I've just tried to spend my time and energy enjoying her last season and my last opportunity to watch her play. :(

p.s. This pseudo Falcons89 is not as good as the real deal :P

hockeya1a- I've seen you say shots are kept to the outside by New Prague twice now.?..I've seen most their games this year and believe me shots are from all over the place, right in the slot, scrums in front of the net , screens, lots of scoring chances.

NP allowed an average of over 30 shots per game, were outshot in most of their games, (7 of those by a ratio of over 2 to 1, 5 of those 7 games of which they still won or took it to overtime)

Brooke Bartelt will be sorely missed and will be a great college player-she knows what she wants from her college hockey experience and is making her choice with that in mind. Things will be even more challenging for NP next year, they lose more than Bartelt- another D and forward off Varsity.

RSI , was crying about the coach in the Albert Lea Tribune paper and they ousted his comments.

We are all so glad he didn't get the coaching job when he tried for it about three years ago.

God Bless you RSI / Sean P.

Falcon 89 Fan ,

RSI will be taking some time off from the forum as his Daughter was a Senior this year. :P He needs time off because not being able to control the team has really aged him alot.

He will be back in a few years as he has a younger Daughter , unless he makes her go out for something other than hockey.

I think he will be alot more wiser the next time around.

No matter how the RW backers try to spin it, losing Rose will set back the Wingers greatly. How could it not when you lose a player who is on the ice 9/10 of the game and isn't the goalie?

The Wingers could take so many more chances, both on offense and defense with Rose. Everything started and ended with her. The "once Rose gets the puck everyone fly" breakout won't quite be the same. Nor will the "Rose take the puck away" defensive zone coverage.

Once again, this is not to say the young players are not talented, but Scottie Pipen and the Bulls were never the same player and team without Michael Jordon, nor will the Wingers be the same without Rose.

Additionally, they lost their other senior defense. RW will give up way more goals this year and not score nearly as many.

Fbo will walk the section and make a return bid to State.

One should take a look at the D8 Advanced 15 roster, then the Final 102 roster, for a young Red Wing D coming up...

May want to take a look, Falcons...

Fairbault won't make it to state for many reasons.
1) They are in the same boat Red Wing was in last year as in the fact their best player was un noticed. this year every one knows megan bergland is the best player in the sections and all any team needs to do it shut her down
2)It is hard to go to state one year and do it again the next due to everyone wants to win against them and they have the target.
3)For the past 5 years no team "whos year it was to go to state" has made it.
4) New Prague, Red Wing, and Northfield will give them a big run for their money.

as For Dmandad or whatever,
i just so happened to look at that and it shows red wing has one stellar defense and an outstanding goalie that will be juniors, two sophomores (one defense and one foward) and a great foward freshman that all have the talent to do D1. Now I don't want to jinx it but with all this talent, i dont see how a team of one person could make it past Red Wing again. It will all be in Red Wings control on how they can transition to form around this new team, one that sound have a lot of success this year but my prediction in the next 10 years to follow. My guess is they will make it to state 6 times out of the next 10 or even more
