New State tournament format
The event will now take place on Saturday and Sunday with 2 games on Saturday.
kind of a bummer... Kids always love getting out of school on Friday to play, plus I don't like the idea of making teams play 2 games in one day in the State tournament. Games can go to OT and other things can arise that make it a bit unfair to some teams by having to play again that same day. State games can be quite demanding on these kids, even at their young age.

The two day format was set because of kids missing school.
Some at MH thought it hypocritical to say to invitatinal tourney hosts NOT to take kids out and then do it for state.
My argument was that this should be a special event (same with the banquet).
If complaints are lodged a return to 3 day (and add the banquet) could happen in 2012.

Elliott: Couldn't agree more with the 2 games in one day format. There isn't a school in Minnesota that has a problem with kids missing a day or 2 of school to play in the State Hockey tourney. Playing 2 games in one day is just not logical........I could use other descriptors but won't in this forum!!!

What's so weird about 2 games in a day? I'm not aware of any association tournament or AAA tourney that doesn't schedule 2 games a day.
This format condenses the tourney - saving money on hotels, etc, but rushing the experience.
I don't think MH should consider kids missing school for the state tourney hypocritical when compared to the association tourney guidelines. Association tourneys are a dime a dozen. There is only 1 state.
My solution would be a Friday game and 2 Saturday games.

I like the idea of two Saturday games and one on Sunday. This will really make it seem like a tournament.
A couple few years ago my kid played at State. We left home Thursday morning for the banquet and returned late Sunday. In the 80 hours we were gone, my kid played three hours of hockey. fun, but not very efficient.
With only four games Fridya and Satruday, there is lots of down time at the rink. This way, you would have hockey going all day Saturday and the local association does not have to buy all of the Friday ice.
Two games in one day favors the deepest teams, not the one-horse teams. I like this idea, too.

8 games on Saturday is a very tight schedule unless you can use 2 rinks. If you only use 1 rink and start at 8am, the last game would start at 8:15 pm, if you allow for 1:45 min games. That's no problem if everything goes smooth and there are no overtime games. The likely hood of that is pretty slim. By the end of Saturday I could see the last game starting as late as 9:30 pm.
Mark, it aint broke don't fix it. Why does MN Hockey always have to screw good things up? They changed the old region format that worked just fine for years. They bring in this stupid HEP point crap so now the boys have to play like girls. Now you want to ruin the state tournament.
Nothing against you Mark, I think your heart is in the right place, but why does MN hockey keep making these questionable decisions.

Spinner...the White Bear Moose Goheen tournament structures their tournament as straight 8 team bracket, identical to the high school hockey tournament. 1 game per day. The only difference is they do allow a friendship game to occur so everybody is guarenteed 3 games. What's so weird about 2 games in a day? I'm not aware of any association tournament or AAA tourney that doesn't schedule 2 games a day.
It must work because they usually get some of the best teams in the state to play in it every year.
"I find tinsel distracting"
This has to change. This is not good. This will be one of the kids best memories growing up and we are trying to make sure they dont miss a day of school. Take the state high school tournament into consideration. The kids always talk about all the things they did as a team along with the games they played in. There must be more behind this because this is a bad idea.
I would not like this at the high school level at all.
However, at the youth level. I don't get the problem. Wisconsin's youth state tournaments are run on just Saturday and Sunday's with 2 games on Saturday, 1 on Sunday and ther eis a 3 game guarantee for all participants. It's an 8 team bracketed style tournament. To see a sample of how the bracket is structured you can visit:

I personally have never heard single parent complain about the set up down here in WI. Sometimes I think people don't like change jsut because it's change, not because there is anything inherently wrong with the idea they are changing too. JMHO. As someone who has never known the youth state tourney to be any other way than this format I don't get what the problem is. Again, JMHO

Cost of banquet:500 attendees @ $17 a plate= $8500 + $300 decorations + $1000 hall rental $500 speaker stipend total= $10,300.00
These are approximate costs for 8 teams with 17 players and 4 coaches and 1 manager.
200 non paying guests, players, coaches, referees and local association members leaves 300 paying attendees @ $25 a plate =$7,500.00 or a cost to host of $2800.00, if $30 a plate charge then $1300 cost to host.
Some have charged the players and coaches in the past but if you are holding a less popular tournament attendance at the banquet is also fewer by a large number. I have heard stories of $25 for 1 taco or a plate of spaghetti, but it is the caterer that will come out ahead as the per plate charge will still be high, if you have a good level with a good gate but before this past year the host either collected nothing or $800 and had to get the rest from the gate to covet the costs of ice, trainers, referees.

Beard: $17 plate plus $1000 to rent the hall? You must be from Edina.
If you bring 500 people into any hall, the hall will be free and the meals (pasta or chicken) will be discounted. Especially if it is at the "Official Hotel" and is the State Tournament Banquet.
do not spend $500 on a speaker. Many hockey celebrities would be willing to do it for free, just for the kids.
Max cost would be $5000. At 20 bucks each for the 300 folks who are not players/refs/coaches, you get $6000. Plenty of margin for error.
Its even cheaper if your own volunteers can cook and serve.
