Sam Foley commits to Plattsburgh

Congrats to former Woodbury Goalie Sam Foley committed Plattsburgh D-III last week. Sam played 3 years of juniors, his first for the Hudson Crusaders in MJ. His 2nd he played for Bowmanville and Trenton in the OPJHL and he finished his career in Blind River this season.

I know Sam's Dad and have met Sam before. Very nice kid, very nice family. He's the kind of kid who had to work very hard for everything he achieved on the ice so he will really appreciate this.

Secondly, how is it that Ted Urschel ever got a job as a head coach? I thought Talafous was running things in Hudson. Apparently, when your dad owns a team, it guarantees you a job.

secondly - i thought this was a high school forum

thirdly - players don't sign letters to play for DIII schools. I can give you a list of hundreds of HS players who have "committed" to a DIII school. Congrats to all of them too. Coaches at these programs welcome as many players as they can get to show up for tryouts. They don't care if they are from HS, JR. Gold, etc. Everyone gets to try out.

BTW MJ, I know ted. His father isn't the owner of the team, just the GM. They have a board of directors who hires their coaches.

First off, I put this up here to get Sam some acknowledgement for the hard work he put in these past 3 years. For those who don't know, Sam actually quit hockey this year and got a call from Blind River on his drive home. He went there and won the starting job, which helped them salvage their season.

Second hockeyboys, Plattsburgh does not have open try-outs, much like River Falls and some of the other NCHA and MIAC schools. They scheduled him for a visit where he met the entire coaching staff, they showed him the locker room and gave him a stall. Not something most teams do for a kid on a "try-out". Also this wasn't an advertisement for the crusaders. Just me giving Sam some props. I posted the story from our website incase people wanted to read it.

As for MJ, you can PM me if you want the story on Dean. It's not too interesting.

Kudos to Sam for working all these years and getting the chance to continue to play. These are the kind of posts that should be on the high school site. It shows there are places for kids that work hard to play after high school. There are a lot of kids that don't immediately play in the USHL and NAHL and yet can be successful. Sam worked at youth Clinics in Woodbury and was a great role model for younger goalies of which my son was one. So were Brandin Wiggen and Greg Moore. It's nice to have a short notice once in a while on these guys to let the younger kids know that you can get places by working hard even if you are not an NHL draft prospect. It's a great testament to a great kid. Congrats again Sam.
