During the tournament broadcast I thought I heard Story is headed to UW River Falls, can anyone else confirm hearing this?

She'd be a heck of a player for that team.
Heard that during the broadcast as well. It has been confirmed to a friend who spoke with a UWRF coach.

Just issued by the MN Jr Whitecaps if you read down looks like some top players joining the JWC teams this summer. This program and the MN Ice Cats have been a tremendous success story for MN HS Girls to get D1 opportunities - Winny Brodt, Chris Peterson and Allie Sanchez all work very hard to make sure D1 programs are looking at MN players and compared to other programs this is a great at cost program.

2010- 2011 D1 Commitments

Post by anderc14 »

Great for Minnesota girls- however I mostly applaud the girls in Minnesota hockey that can let high school hockey go (and sports in general) and move unto a college career in which they can focus on academics and not hockey.

Many players choose second rate colleges just to play hockey- parents and players need to move onto the next phase in life. I realize that I am understudy on this board but for most players there is not much of an advantage to playing college hockey.

Ever try to get an engineering degree and play college hockey- there is roughly a 25-30% chance that even not playing college sports, a person can achieve a degree in technology. For college hockey players, it must be in the 3- %5 range at best- I would advise moving beyond high school sports. Players need to learn to advance to the next stage in life.

I think you are on the right track anderc14. Just like boys who were sports stars in high school it is time for most to move on in life. We all know that captain of the ______ team in high school who is still living in the past. However, I do think that some girls can play hockey and do well in college if they understand that hockey is just a means to the next step in life. Even though it will be hard, especially at top schools that offer D1 Hockey, but I believe that some girls have the right stuff to do both. Hockey (and many other sports) can help girls get admitted to some pretty incredible schools. Good schools are looking for more than just academically gifted students. They want community service and/or other abilities that can add to the fabric of their schools. I agree with you that a school should not be selected based on the chance to play hockey alone. Picking the right school is more important than playing hockey, something for most girls (and boys) will not last more than 4 more years maximum. A good education on the other hand will last a life time.

I'm interested in which colleges you think are 'second rate'. You obviously attended a 'first rate' college and insist your children do the same? Is it just girl hockey players that you think should avoid these 'second rate' schools, or all prospective college students? Assuming you consider say, St. Cloud State to be 'second rate', what do you have to say to those hundreds of thousands of SCSU graduates who you believe attended a 'second rate' school? Did you or one of your children turn down a full ride scholarship to a 'second rate' school to instead pay $100K+ for an education at one of these 'first rate' schools? Do you consider anything other than an 'engineering degree' from a 'first rate' school to be a complete waste of time?

You are way off base, the NCAA tracks Graduation Success Rates of all athletes and general student populations. A female athlete entering as a freshman is the more likely to graduate than the general female population. There are many teams that have a consistent perfect GSR.

A female athlete is statistically less likely to do drugs, have a alcohol problem, have an unwanted pregnancy, or suffer in an abusive relationship than her non athletic female student peers. These athletes will have doors opened for them to institutions that they may have otherwise not been able to enter. As an athlete she will enter school with a support program (other than her parents) that has a vested interest in her success on an off the ice.

There are girls on this list I know, they had options, they reviewed their choices, and made as sound of a decision as any 18 year old could. I don't know how you define a "2nd Rate" school but when I look at the D1 and D3 schools these girls are attending I don't see it. Are you ripping on NDSU, BSU, MSM as 2nd rate?

I think you are putting too much emphasis on the "second rate". I don't know anderc14 and I can't read his or her mind. I thought he or she was a little harsh but I took his or her comments to mean: (1) girls shouldn't choose a school merely on the opportunity to play hockey; and (2) girls should really think about what is best for them in the long run and whether or not the hockey time commitment interfers with their goals. I agree with these points.

As far as second rate schools I just glossed over that because to me when he or she was talking about a "second rate" school I took it to mean that the girl settled for a school that didn't fit her just so she could play hockey, which I think is wrong. For some girls Harvard is a good fit and for some St. Cloud State is a better fit. The best school is the school the girl will thrive in academically.

I think girls should be thinking about school first and how it fits with their long term goals and hockey last. Yes it would be an honor and privilege for a girl and her parents to be a star player at a D1 (or D3) school and there are potential financial incentives but the school has to fit the girl and be a place a girl can be successful to get onto the next phase of her life.

I played college sports and I enjoyed it but it had nothing to do with my success and in some ways my pursuit of sport and my college choice made it rougher road to succeed.

My experience is that Women who choose to pursue an athletic sport in College do it because they love the sport. When you love something, you choose to devote time to it. This means that you sacrifice things like sororities, parties, Saturday afternoon football games and other social events that are part of college life. The graduation rate and success factors for athletes (at least women athletes) is as high or higher than the general population. On top of that, participating in athletics requires you to be more focused and organized. Being an athlete is a differentiator when you entered the job market because it helps your resume stand out.

If MN Jr Whitecaps sent out it is correct - they released list on Sunday.

I'm not completely familiar with the Jr. Whitecaps selection process. Is this by invitation only, is there a nomination process, or is there a formal tryout? How many teams are in this league?

Winny Brodt Brown and Chris Peterson are the drivers behind the program - if interested I would connect with them. I think they both have high exposure to girls through different events. They know and maintain relationships with D1 and D3 coaches which is a benefit. The neat thing about the program is they get talented players from across the state together, generate great competition for the gilrs at pretty close to cost.

This is great news. That makes 4 D1 recruits from this Roseville senior class--if I'm not mistaken the other time that's happened recently was the '07-'08 EP team with Seeler and Feste and two others (I need some help with their names).

Other teams with multiples: SSM, T'Breds and Hopkins -- 3. WB, HM, Burnsville, Roseau, and Edina -- 2.

Congratulations to all 35 (and counting).

This is great news and means every senior (Megan Lawrence is a Junior) from the Silver MN JR Whitecaps has now committed to play D1 hockey in the fall of 2010. Great tribute to the hard work of the girls and to the coaches Winny Brodt, Chris Peterson and Allie Sanchez.
