The point that has been overlooked is that the process MSHSL goes through every 2 years is called "competative section realignment" so the idea to is make each section more competative and give the stronger teams a better change to make it to state. I belive there is also an underlying desire to maintain a certain level of regional representation so won't be seeing section 6AA or 2AA teams being moved to 7 or 8.

The MSHSL seldom makes wholesale changes and I don't think that will happen this time either. In AA you'll probably see them try to strengthen 1AA by adding Eagan and maybe another team and they look to move someone out of 6AA, perhaps Wayzata and send them to 5AA.

In the near future I could see the 2 remaining Mpls teams (and Cooper?) moving to A just as St. Paul Johnson did this year so that will force a minor re-org and some lucky school(s) will get moved in 6AA.

Changes for next year...

Post by hockeydad »

For next year, Duluth Central closes and Denfeld will move to the Central campus. Will Denfeld stay in 5A or move to 7A, since the league uses the location of the school in determining what section a team is in.

Also, with Chaska and Chanhassen splitting for boys hockey next season, where will the enrollment numbers put them? The enrollment listed for Chaska on the MSHSL website is 2446, which is what Chaska would have been without the new school opening. Cut that number in half, and that would put both Chan and Chaska at under 1300 students, while the A/AA cutoff is 1342.

Also, are there any other changes coming in programs? New teams? Teams combining? Coop teams splitting up? I remember rumors a year ago that Highland Park was going to try to restart a program.

your 6aa would just add to the already growing problem, the idea should to balance the sections not stack one.

a little small school gerrymandering... huh???

Yes. WIth the exception of Alex. I always favored the Marriucci for Fergus Falls in hockey. I know, the CLC has strong teams too....but honestly, they need to be playing Moorhead and especially East Grand Forks... as well as teh others.... I would actually like to see them trade in their TC trips for more games with those teams.
Back to the subject. I have always liked the "regional" split in class A and class AA. That way you don't have the AA tournement being the twin cities championship.....
I believe that schools that are large for their areas need to compete in the larger class. Bemidji, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Alexandria, Thief River Falls...all need to be competing in the bigger classes in athletics. It has become something of a joke lately. You don't even have to imagine this: Fergus Falls and Detoit Lakes compete in Class AA in baseball. That means that they compete with Breckenridge, Ottertail Central(Battle Lake).... not right. TO GARY SCHULER: Move all teams to where they belong....... Fergus Falls does not need to compete with Breckenridge in the playoffs...get real...

Mnhock.. I kinda agree, however, North High has 1700 studemts, and their program is in better shape than St. Paul Johnson's, in terms of numbers at the youth levels, as well. I agree with St. Paul Johnson now being in Class A, and feel that St. Paul Como and the Saints should also move to Class A. Although the school sizes are under 1,100 students, the St. Paul schools and Mpls inner city schools have to co-op, and therefore, that means these should be labled as at a competitive disadvantage - if that is indeed what the intent is..

I thought Alex was being moved back to AA because their enrollment #'s are increasing?? They are a top 64 school and rising, are they not??

If Alex is moved back up to AA, it wouldn't be until 2011-12. MSHSL moved them down for 09-10 and 10-11. they redo the sections every two years.
