#1 ranking

Post by flatontheice »

How many teams in recent memory have had the number one ranking all year and not win the state championship?

No one remembers runner ups.

Back in 2008 Roseau was ranked #1 and was undefeated until they ran into Hill Marray and lost in the semi's

I think in 2005 Moorhead was ranked 1 for most of the year, but lost to Hill on the last game of the year, and Holy Angels in the finals.

I think a better question would be what teams have had the number 1 ranking all year and actually won state?

I think im correct but might be wrong, in 1997 Red Wing went 27-0 and won the championship. Also believe they were #1 all year..but not positive.

I'm pretty sure that Edina was ranked #1 for a short period of time after beating Centennial and Eden Prairie in consecutive games in late December...but other than that they were wire to wire #1

Beat the Best

Both the 1971 and 1980 Hill and Hill-Murray Pioneers were ranked #1 all season long and undefeated before being upset in their state finals.

The 1983 Hill-Murray world champions were undefeated and dispatched the #1 ranked team in the final.

The only other team to win a state championship out of Hill's section, the #1 ranked 2004 Centennial Cougars, slipped past Hill-Murray on their way to their only state title.

In 1993, #1 Bloomington Jefferson had not lost a game since losing to Hill-Murray in 1991/92, went undefeated by beating Hill-Murray in the 1993 state final, and did not lose again until losing to Hill-Murray in the 1993/94 season.

In 1985, Burnsville was ranked #1 all year and beat, guess who, Hill-Murray in the state championship final.

As already mentioned, Hill-Murray beat #1 and #2 to win state in 2008; the Pioneers also beat the #1 and #2 ranked teams on their way to their 1991 state championship.

Also as already mentioned, the 2005 Moorhead Spuds were ranked #1 for most of the year but lost to Hill on the last game of the year and Holy Angels in the finals.

The #1 ranked 1977 Edina East team lost the state final to a team the Hill-Murray Pioneers had just beat. Regular season co-favorite and pre-tourney unbeaten Brotens and the Roseau Rams were decimated by Hill in the consolation championship, too.

Catholics and private schools were just merged into the MSHSL in 1974/75 when Hill beat #1 ranked Bloomington Lincoln for state third place.

Some of the other top ranked teams to win state:

2001 Elk River
1999 Roseau
1998 Duluth East
1996 Apple Valley
1987 Bloomington Kennedy
1982 Edina

How is this for a first time post, Sachi?
