Curt Giles is a genius
Last year (and the few prior) Coach Giles took a beating from some on this board because the Hornets never won state during the Gaarder-Budish-Lee-Everson era. Some even speculated he'd get fired. Dig and you'll find threads discussing his replacement.
Today Edina will play for the state championship for the second time in three years. Under Giles they've won hardware at least four years in a row. Section II is tough, but the Hornets emerge annually.
Not even one thread started until now? Gee, it sure is easier for some to be critical. What's the expression? The accusation makes the front page, it's buried in the back when charges are dropped.
Preseason Star-Tribune Top 10 did not include the Hornets. Say what you will, he must be doing something right.

I remember this year at the high school giles clinic he said last summer that even though nobody is giving us a chance he believes this team is completely underestimated, and he fully expects us to be back for the state tournament this year. i remember thinking. is he insane? well he sure proved me wrong and proved that he is one heck of a coach, hats off to the guy.

As crazy as it sounds, I think Curt Giles breathed a sigh of relief when those seniors graduated last year, because with them came extremely high expectations. I can't imagine the pressure those seniors and Coach Giles felt. When talking to a friend before the tournament, we had talked about how fitting it would be for Edina to win it all the year after their super seniors gradated. With that said, I hope Edina does lose, but give Giles A LOT of credit.

Edina had a great player once that missed several games with an injury and they actually played better without him. In no way does it reflect on the player, but sometimes the others in youth and HS sports are just too deferential.nipeshow18 wrote:When talking to a friend before the tournament, we had talked about how fitting it would be for Edina to win it all the year after their super seniors gradated.
