Final Section playoff is joke

I just don't think it makes sense to pack 4 of the top teams in one section, and have an easier section where the champion gets rocked in the first round at the X. Someone earlier said something about how the state tournament is fun to watch b/c of the team that isn't expected to do anything can take down a powerhouse. But if they just made the sections equal upsets could still happen in section play, they could get to state (and in my opinion actually deserve to be there) and maybe pull another upset.
great point. just think how much better the tournament would be if we swapped apple valley and north out for ep and wayata. then every team at state would we in the top 12.bardown33 wrote:I just don't think it makes sense to pack 4 of the top teams in one section, and have an easier section where the champion gets rocked in the first round at the X. True but remember 3AA had Eagan (#13) and Cretin (#19). AV could be fun to watch with all their sophs/frosh. I think they'll definately be a top 10 team next year and i'll even say they'll get 1 win in this years tourney.
split it
Split the North from the South, Top 16 teams in the North play down to 4. Top 16 teams from the South play down to 4. No two divisions, just one state tournament, A vs AA. Then the South will be happy because their top 4 teams are in the tounament and the Class A people can quit trying to compare their title to the AA tiltle.
All is soved!

Lakeviewing, this is just rediculous. So HM doesnt even have a chance? You just said the Edina is unbeatable to the Lake conference teams in section 2. So i guess Apple Valley is also so horrible for section 3. Cretin was over looked in Sec 3 in 2006 when they completely ran the table after game 1 of the state tourney. they were not ranked high and won out convincingly. Apple Vally prepared well for their game against Woodbury and played the type of game they needed to to win. how about just congratulating them on winning and punching their ticket to the X! Is a new tourney format required in your opinion to allow your team another opportunity to lose another game, but this time on TV? Get over the format and just enjoy our greatest passtime of icehockey. Im sure that there are plenty of other homers on this forum that wish their team was still playing this next week, but the fact is, they are not. IMHO, the other boys sports in the state are to watered down and diluted. The sections are separated in the state the way they are in order to give a geographic representation of Minnesota hockey. If you truely love to see the big match ups that you are talking about, go attend all the section playoff games. Each of the boys that play in any of the sections, know the format in wich they will have to travel to get to the X and be a representative of their respective sections. they put forth the best effort to get there, and that is what makes those games great. not making it to the X does not make them any less of an individual hockey player. Quit trying to live vicariously through these athletes. You will enjoy the game much more thouroughly.

Dear Eastsider.
We have two Lake Conference teams being Lakeville and Apple Valley competing in the Lake Conference and being mid pack teams, but making it to the State. Bless these team as the representatives to their sections of play, this is not their fault, this is just the system the Minnesota High School League has slotted them in. Sorry, but Lakeville and Apple Valley didn't live up to a higher level of play in their conference level of play, but gets to play at the State. EP, Jefferson and Burnsville are better teams in the Lake Conference here. Having a Lakeville and Apple Valley team is a joke here and are probaby will play in the consolation play. Poor section seeding here.

Re: Dear Eastsider.
Let me make this a little more clear for you. You don't like the section pairings. How many teams from the Lake have the opportunity to make it to the X in any given year at the same time? Let me help you out. The answer is 4! Section 1, section 2, section 3, and section 6. Unfortunatally Minnetonka and Edina put a stop to all 4 making it this year. The lake is the only conference spread across sections this much. The SEC has the possibility of 3 teams and the classic lake 2 teams and the north suburban 2 teams. What about up north? They have one chance. Only section 8 and 7. I don't hear them complaining though. Apple Valley beat Eagan one of your best in the lake to get there. Lakeville South killed Cretin 8 to 2 in the season, but you call the Lakeville teams mid pack? Think about this a little longer. I'm not going to argue with you. The facts are so clear. Maybe if we split all the conferences in to all eight sections you would be happier. Remember, each section traditionally has its favorite or power house, so the same result will probably occur. So once again the lake might only represent section 1. If this is not clear enough for you, someone else can try to help you with your dilema.Lakeviewing wrote:We have two Lake Conference teams being Lakeville and Apple Valley competing in the Lake Conference and being mid pack teams, but making it to the State. Here's what you people need to understand. Kids graduate.
You can't say "omg it's not fair the the top teams are all in one section omg change the section assignments!" because just because a team is good right now, that doesn't mean they will ALWAYS be good indefinitely.
In order for the argument to be valid about changing section assignments, these top 7 - 8 teams would need to show that they are as such for like 15 straight years. That doesn't happen because, again, teams don't keep the same players forever.
If you want to change sections so that the best teams in the state don't play each other, what are you going to do? Change the assignments every couple of years? That's retarded.
There's nothing wrong with the system... It just so happens that sometimes there are really good teams in the same section. So what?

Agreed. Here is how "dominant"

2009- Eden Prairie (Champs)
2001- Eastview (Cons)
With an overall record NOT INCLUDING LAKEVILLE of 8-15
Maybe the Lake Conference should be happy just to be represented

Sounds like sour grapes Lakeviewing. You're just mad because your team probably did well in their conference and then couldn't get it done when the games actually counted. Let me guess, you want to get rid of the section tournaments altogether and just have the conference champions go to state. Instead of complaining about section seedings and which teams are in each section maybe you should help your team figure out how to play in games that actually mean something.
FYI, schools that don't have 3,000+ students have up and down years for different sports at different times.

Yep, and even if they had more hardware than that, you still can't draw the conclusion of section re-assignment.DubCHAGuy wrote:adamp1914 wrote:Here's what you people need to understand. Kids graduate.

Agreed. Here is how "dominant"the Lake Conf. teams have been over the last 10 years. Their total hardware won at State:
2009- Eden Prairie (Champs)
2001- Eastview (Cons)

It's essentially the same argument for moving teams up or down in class. Only one year ago people were complaining about moving STA up to class AA. Only one year later, no one is saying that because they haven't even made it to the tournament the past two years. It's about established and continued dominance over long stretches of time in either case (changing section formats or moving a team between classes).
I actually bursted out laughing when I saw that there was a thread where people were saying "omg move breck to AA jeez!" Why? Because they've won a couple of times within the past ten years? So what?
Quite simply, a team being good, or multiple teams being good *RIGHT NOW* is not a justification for changing anything. And suggesting that it is is quite simply not a conclusion that you can make. I don't know how to make it simpler than that.

They do re-assign sections every two years. It happens again this spring.
This year the fix is easy and works geographically:
-Pull Wayzata out of 6AA and send them up to 5AA.
-Pull Burnsville out of 2AA into 3AA (Would a BV/AV playoff game be any fun?)
-Send either BSM or AHA (maybe both) over the river to play Hill Murray. Let those guys beat on each other.
-In each case, the team leaving would be swapped for a mid-strength team.
Yea.. It's happening this Spring.. Before you know which teams are going to be good next year. It's pretty easy to say "move this team here and move this team there" when you have seen them play all season and you know which teams are better than others. What's your next idea? determine section assignments when the season is almost over?Trojanhorse wrote:adamp1914 wrote:

What if you make those moves you're suggesting and then one of those teams ends up being better / worse than expected? What if making those changes takes the top teams in the state from one section and just makes that true for another section?
In 1998 our team was ninth in the state. The very next year we won 5 games. You can't base what a team is capable of during the spring. You can't determine which teams are going to be the best in the state before you even see them play. You can't determine section assignments after you know which teams are good because then you'd be re-assigning sections at the end of every year.
"this year the change was easy" suggests that you are in favor of balancing and re-assigning things every single year. You also wouldn't have been able to say that if one of those teams in your suggested moves was like 5 - 22, which, again, you'd have no way of knowing when the assignments happen.
Moving good teams around means that first, you'd have to KNOW they are good. if different teams play each other every single year based on how good they are, that's no different than just have one giant tournament based on seedings.

One more thing, adamp. it is not about right now. Look at these sections for the future:
6AA
EP-next year's seniors have won state championships at bantams and h.s.
Tonka-Great this year. Lots of players coming back and next year's sophs are top five in bantams.
Wayzata-Next years juniors won state at PW and Bantam. Lots of guys coming back to a team that only lost three times this year
Benilde: Loaded in Soph and Junior classes next year.
2AA
Edina-longstanding powerul program. Next year's seniors have been to state twice in h.s. Next years sophs ranked top five in state bantams this year.
B-Ville- Bantams in state tourney this year
AHA-Loaded in next year's soph and junior classes
Jefferson-Lots of players returning to a good team.
All of these teams will be at or near the top ten pre-season rankings next year. They should be split up for section playoffs.

Preseason ratings don't remain static throughout the entire season. In 1999 we returned 10 players from the 9th ranked team. We sucked. You don't know what a team is gonig to do until they play. That's why they play.Trojanhorse wrote:One more thing, adamp. it is not about right now. Look at these sections for the future:

Remember, the fastest horse does not always win the race, but it is a good place to bet.
Will AV be good in ten years? who knows? But no one who follows Minnesota Hockey should be surprised by AV's success this year. The Soph class won the state tournament as PWs and Bantams.
Its not about making sure the top eight teams get to state. Its about making sure that most of top teams have a chance to get there. This year, the section line up made it impossible to have 5 of the top ten teams in the state tournament. (Seven top ten teams were in two sections, so only 2/7 could get through).

I think northwoods oldtimer has been listening to the Brainerd coach a little too much. Still sour grapes about losing to Roseau. The high school league is not going to adopt a 3 game series. This isn't college or pros, these are public/private high schools. Money isn't endless and schools could no way afford 3 games series.
GreenandWhite, No disrespect to Roseau I just would like to see the Warriors get to state one time. Nice to see new teams in the tournament. I listened to your game on the internet feed and was impressed with the intensity. That is what prompted my thoughts on 3 games series. Sure they are not professionals but we churn out good hockey and 25 games is just not enough for high school hockey. Playoff hockey brings out the best in the kids as spirit of competition rises.
Northwoods oldtimer:
I too would like to see that but realistically it would never happen. Too many multi-sport athletes get rushed into baseball season right after and a few years ago an area school had a problem with state football championships during their tryouts. As much as I would love to see it, these kids are great ATHLETES because of their diversity in sports... Keep in mind, baseballs' state tourney is after the HS' have already closed up shop and headed out on summer break. I dont think the HS league can afford to push back their seasons any further.

Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree that this year, the tournament doesn't feature the top teams in the state like it should. Again though, I guess I just don't agree that you can always predetermine (before the season starts) which teams those will be come playoff time.Trojanhorse wrote:Remember, the fastest horse does not always win the race, but it is a good place to bet.

Not only that, but I don't agree that you can take the predetermination and use it to cahnge / set a section for more than a year at a time.
regarding AV, I do think you are correct about that. I actually picked them to win that section.
Looks like a metro tourney. Not a state tourney.curtiscurve wrote:Top 8 AA teamsTrojanhorse wrote:Everybody is right, you are just not listening to each other very well.
Who thinks its fair that seven of the top 8 teams are in two sections?
The MSHSL should do everything it can to get to get the best teams while still honoring regional representation. It is not really hard to do.
You can use the regions that are in place, but you just need to pay attention to the teams. They reallocate regions every two years. You can look at past and predicted success to move some programs around. Wayzata can go up with the northern suburbs. Eagan and Burnsville can play Lakeville instead of Edina. The Lakevilles are not top metro teams and do not help regional representation.
1 Minnetonka
2 Eden Prairie
3 Wayzata
4 Blaine
5 Edina
6 Jefferson
7 Burnsville
8 Holy Angels
That should be the State Tournament? Now that is something the whole state can get excited about! The fact that only a couple of those teams make it to the big dance is what makes the section tournaments so great. By the way, the mighty 2AA representative was upended by a Moorehead team that many of you suggested didn't belong in the tournament. The section tournaments are great and the State tournament is second to none. The system is not broke and doesn't need fixing!
Word. It doesn't make sense to complain that champions from certain sections are worse than runners up of other sections because you need representation from all over the state, or it's just a metro suburb tourny (with the exception of like Warroad and Roseau).bjspud12 wrote:Looks like a metro tourney. With that said, it seems to me that most of the conflict of section assignments is within the metro anyway.
And as I'm thinking about this more.. If the top 4 teams are all in the same section, that doesn't mean that all of them don't have an equal shot at winning state. Regardless of whether or not they make it to the tournament, they're going to have to go through each other eventually anyway. Putting them into different sections does absolutely nothing to change that.
I would have to disagree with that. It's like putting the top 4 seeds in the ncaa tourney in a regional and saying the team who comes out of the regional with a bunch of 4 seeds had the same path to the championship. Teams in section 6 like EP would have had to beat the 2 top rated teams in the state just to make it to the tourney while others have to play .500 teams right through their section finals. Yes you're going to have to beat some of the best teams to win the title but you can't tell me EP and Apple Valley have an equal shot at winning state. And as I'm thinking about this more.. It looks like we're heading towards a metro state tourney anyway. Lakeville is metro and their two teams are dominating 1AA where you used to get Rochester teams coming up. 7AA had Elk River, Andover, and FL as its 1,3, and 4 seeds. Andover is a new and upcoming team and FL seems to be better than I ever remember. ER has been solid for a while. The Decc is the best thing going for section AA in helping send a northern team down. Duluth East deserves to be there but we might have seen different results had they had to travel twice to the coloseum. I don't think teams like Buffalo will have a shot at 8AA anytime soon but you never know.

Edina, Eden Prairie, Jefferson, Burnsville, Minnetonka, Holy Angels, Benilde will always be top teams because they all have large number of kids tryout. I would be willing to bet that there will never be a year when there are 3 or more of these teams outside the top 10 or 12. So i do think they need to split these schools up a little more, maybe even split them into 3 sections instead of 2
And also you are helping prove the point that a tournament like the ncaa basketballs would be better because you never know who the top 15 teams are going to be so why risk having them in all in 2 or 3 sections when you could just rank the top 64 teams and do a tournament

School Size has something to do with success, especially when they are twice the size of the smaller AA schools 1200.

I still don't really see the problem with having a Section Championship actually mean something. Don't you think that you could be just a little more proud of your Section Championship knowing that you beat out 2 or 3 other top ten teams...as opposed to beating out a team that you've seen in the section championship game the last 10 or so years in a row???
I understand how the top 10 team who doesn't make it get's frustrated, but that's how it is. Isn't having unproven or unknown teams in the State Tournement part of what makes the event what it is???? Which brings up another point that no one really wants to hear: How accurate are all of the ratings????? Do you really live and die with the opinions of a few people???
In my opinion, I hate the two class system. Yeah, that's original right??? Well I don't hate it because we have two state champions, or because we let lesser quality teams into the classic....I hate it because Class AA almost already is the "Metro Tournement", it's not right. If this truly is a "state" tournement, then in their current format they should have representation from accross the state, including equal representation across the metro.
I think that certain schools or programs will always have strong teams. I also think that any success a given school has runs in cycles. I would be perfectlly fine if the MSHSL left the sections alone for awhile instead screwing everything up every two years. Let the teams form rivalries, and multiple ones. Let programs grow and fall.
