DID THE REFS ACTUALLY BLOW A GAME????
Moderators: Mitch Hawker, east hockey, karl(east)
this call was missed and it is really unfortunate that FF had to go down like this. im not really sure how one of the three officials didnt know the rule and overturn the call. this same situation happened to me in a USA ruled game and was called no goal because of the penalty shot situation, but after the game realized we were wrong due to the contradiction of the rebound definition, wasnt a game of this magnitude tho. really is too bad and i hope it is at least reviewed by the MSHSL. thats the least they can do for the kids on the losing end when clearly it should have been a win.

Men responsible
These are the men responsible for not knowing the rules of hockey.
(Linesman) Harrison, Tyler
(Referee) Anderson, Bruce
(Referee) Knutsen, Eric
So which one made the bonehead call?
The MSHSL is hellbent on fairness. Where is their resolve in this situation?

Alex will work Sartell anyway however it is still not right to Fergus. Should have been a goal. I think we can all agree that it was a blown call. Just found out from a relative on Sartells team who said their goalie immediately after admitted he thought it should have been a goal. Wow! See you Friday at the mac. Go Cards!

I think this forum is really funny. For a couple reasons.deucereppin wrote:Alex will work Sartell anyway however it is still not right to Fergus. Should have been a goal. 1. I started a thread a couple years very similar to this about some bad reffing. Back then it was something discussed on here a lot more than now. 90% of people were defending the refs saying things like "if you think you can do do a better job, then you become a ref" and other comments, basically absolving the refs of responsibility for blown calls since they're human. Now it's the exact opposite. Refs make boneheaded calls day in and day out. It's part of the game.
This is why I think there should be people at these games evaluating the refs and stepping in if something completely incorrectly. But we don't have that, life goes on.
2. This is just like blaming a kicker for blowing the game. Both teams had 51 minutes of play before the OT to score more goals than the other. Neither did. If you are really needing a human error in OT to be reversed to win, then you are probably not worthy of moving on.
As was stated, the winner will make for a better 6A final game, but probably still won't go on much further than that. Oh well.

I agree. The man made a mistake. They get paid like $50.00 max for a game right? I think it's out of bounds posting their names, IMO.mulefarm wrote:Junior,
If you are going to post the ref's names then you had better be a man and post who you are! Even though it was the wrong, call there is no need to post their names. Why don't you become a ref?

Junior, it must have made you feel good to post those officials names. I hope these officials do not get harassed because of your post. I am sure they feel as bad as anyone about their mistake. Why not call out the FF coach for not having a rule book with him on the bench? How bout putting the blame on the MSHSL head of officials for not teaching the rules better? Everyone feels bad for the Fergus Falls players and wishes the right call had been made. Junior should be banned and the names should be removed from that post ASAP.
this was a heck of a game. that seems to be lost on the call, i have no stake in the outcome. i agree and feel bad for the otters, ugly way to be done. but i really see no need to be bashing on sartell, those kids played a heck of a game also, and put it all out there. yes, they may be the benificiary of a bad call, but that should not make them the bad guy in this. i say tough break for the otters and lucky break for sartell,( but its not the first and wont be last time refs have a say in the outcome)
the mshl will not step in on this one, so lets move on. the best thing for both teams would be for sartell to beat alex, and move on to state which should also help the otters great young men feel good about their accomplishments.

The linesman has no authority to step in on this. They can only give an interpretation if asked by the referee. The other referee should have consulted with the one that was at the goal, maybe they did I wasn't there, and offer an opinion. If the second referee questioned the ruling, they should have found a rule book, or called a supervisor for clarification if that was an option.
That didn't happen, so its time to move on.
Re: Fergus Falls was robbed by the MSHSL
well said fivehole, i do not think this forum was designed to bash young players, and we should have the facts correct before attempting to influence others, both times it was a sartell foward and a ff defenseman going hard to the net. ( as they are told to do , play till you hear the whistle )fivehole628 wrote:You obviously weren't watching this game close enough... he didnt RUN the goalie over. He and a FF player went crashing into the goalie both times. Both times the puck crossed the line before the net was dislodged or the whistle was blown.gaborik wrote:fivehole628 wrote: I was standing in the penalty box during this game and saw the penalty shot. I couldn't see from my angle if the puck actually crossed the goal line or not but if you want to make the case for bad calls, then how about the 2 times that Austin Plaine went crashing into the net and the puck crossed the line before the whistle blew and net came off it's moorings? You could make the case that those were goals as well but the ref's weren't able to see it.
Ref's are always going to make mistakes. It's part of the game.
I thought the penalty shot also went in because Gervais started to celebrate, but like i said before I couldn't see from my angle.
KUDOS GOES TO THE FERGUS FALLS GOALIE FOR KEEPING HIS TEAM IN THE GAME!! If it weren't for that kid, the game could have easily been a 5-1 or 6-1 game.
for crashing into a goalie and punching him that is a penalty in itself. no way should sartell be playing in the finals against alex.
And punching him? Really...Now your just making things up to make Sartell look like the bad guys...

And yes, Sartell is the better team. You should be congratulating your goaltender for one helluva game instead of bashing Sartell and the refs. Yes the refs weren't great. I'm not gonna argue if the penalty shot went in or not because from my angle I couldn't tell. You are lucky to have such a stud in nets behind you. Goodluck to you guys next year.
another case of both teams putting it all out there and playing with heart.
in neither case did the sartell or ff player draw a penalty. just good hard hockey as it should be. i was also told that the practice incident with plaine and the jv goalie was " both going skating after a loose puck and not "crashing the net"
i am a parent of one of the senior otters-and we all know it was a goal and should have counted. however, it didn't. our coaches have asked us to accept it and be proud of our boys. that we are. it was a great game. i am terribly disappointed about the lack of knowlegde on the refs part and therefore, bad call, however i am just as diappointed with the "running" of our goalie-carr. it was obvious what the sartell players were doing-they did it last year to hemingway. you can say "that is part of the game or tough-life's unfair and the refs didn't call any interference on their part-so get over it". well i say, if you have to play that cheap and unfair to win a game and don't trust your natural skills and talents to win, then in the game of life-sartell is the loser. character will take you a lot further in life than a win on the scoreboard and there again-fergus is the winner. way to go boys and coaches. i am so proud of you all. thanks for a great-well played game. GO ALEX
i am not a parent , and do feel empathy towards your team for the way this game went down, and can understand your feelings. but i do find it hard to understand that you feel sartell is a loser in life. we disagree and that is fine but i feel it takes character to get in the scrum of things and working in the scrum to "pick up the garbage" is a huge part of the game and i feel it is a skill and talent as not all players can do it. i think if you watched any olympics, college,or pro hockey you will see that many goals are scored in the scrum in front of the net and most teams have players that have a knack for it. it is a skill and some excell at it. its tough in there and a player has to be willing to take the abuse to go in there, not all do, and those that do have other talents also. number 21 for sartell has good hockey skills and courage. id like to have him on my team, he plays with heart and should be proud of his game that night just as the otter players should. character will take you farther in life, but i thought both teams showed character, maybe sartell got a break but that should not diminish their effort that night. i would not condone "cheap or unfair " play either, but your definition and mine apparently differ. belittling the sartell team efforts because of something they did not have any say in ( penalty shot situation) shows little character i believe. you should be proud of your team, they did play great, and got a bad break, but lets not blame sartell because they got a good breakredneck13 wrote:i am a parent of one of the senior otters-and we all know it was a goal and should have counted. however, it didn't. our coaches have asked us to accept it and be proud of our boys. that we are. it was a great game. i am terribly disappointed about the lack of knowlegde on the refs part and therefore, bad call, however i am just as diappointed with the "running" of our goalie-carr. it was obvious what the sartell players were doing-they did it last year to hemingway. you can say "that is part of the game or tough-life's unfair and the refs didn't call any interference on their part-so get over it". well i say, if you have to play that cheap and unfair to win a game and don't trust your natural skills and talents to win, then in the game of life-sartell is the loser. character will take you a lot further in life than a win on the scoreboard and there again-fergus is the winner. way to go boys and coaches. i am so proud of you all. thanks for a great-well played game. redneck- I do not think going hard to the net is cheap and unfair but, you might want to reflect on what your goalie did in the second overtime that resulted in the delayed penalty that further resulted in Sartell winning the game - from what I heard from friends he used his stick as an ax across one of the Sartell players helmet. Cheap? you make the call.

This is irrelevant since the MSHSL is not a USA Hockey governed league and therefore doesn't follow the USA Hockey Rulebook. However, being an official for both USA Hockey and the MSHSL, the wrong call was made.OHR wrote:Hockey_fan11 wrote:I've been watching this post and am actually surprised it took so long for this topic to come up. I was at the game, live in St Cloud, not a fan of either school, but figured it would be a good game. I was at that end of the rink when the penalty shot was taken. The puck hit the crossbar, came straight down, hit the ice rolled forward about 2-3 inches when it hit the goalie and went in. There was a ref and linesman on either side of the net and the ref immediately waved off the goal. All 3 officials did get together and discuss it for quite a while and confirmed thier call. Here is what USA Hockey has in their rule book for a penalty shot (couldn't find anything un MSHSL site for rules:
Rule 406 Penalty Shot
(a) A “Penalty Shot” shall be taken as follows:
The Referee shall cause to be announced over the public
address system the name of the player designated by him or
selected by the team entitled to take the shot (as appropriate)
and shall then place the puck on the center face-off spot and
the player taking the shot will, on the instruction of the
Referee, play the puck from there and shall attempt to score
on the goalkeeper. Once the player taking the shot has
touched the puck, it must be kept in motion towards the
opponent’s goal line and once it is shot the play shall be
considered complete. No goal can be scored on a rebound of
any kind and any time the puck crosses the goal line the shot
shall be considered complete.
Only a player designated as a goalkeeper, substitute
goalkeeper or temporary goalkeeper (see Glossary) may
defend against a penalty shot.
Later in the casebook this is listed:
Situation 3
During a Penalty Shot attempt, the puck rebounds off the goal
post, hits the back of the goalkeeper’s leg and enters the goal.
Should the goal be awarded or disallowed?
The goal shall be awarded. Rule Reference 406(a).
Even though Rule 406(a) states that no goal shall be scored on
a rebound, this situation is not considered to be a “rebound.”
The word “rebound” in 406(a) means a second shot by the
player after a deflection off the goalkeeper or goal post.
In the words of CHARLIE BROWN....GOOD GRIEF. This is nothing like a kicker blowing a game. If you want to compare it to football, how about using the situation where the kicker kicked a field goal threw the uprights, the ball hits the extension behind the upright and bounces back through the upright and into play. I'm getting old and can't remember how it turned out, but I believe the NFL added something to their rule books the next year to cover that situation.HShockeywatcher wrote:I think this forum is really funny. Did the Ref's actually blow the Game
I was at the Sartell/ Fergus Falls game and it was a well played game between the two teams. Both of them played hard. In MY opinion the Refs did a good job for the most part. Did they miss some calls Yes? But that’s part of the game. As far as the Sartell player going to the net hard and going into the goalie I think that’s just a good hard play. I was standing right there when it happened. There was no way that either of them were goals by the way that he went into the net, but a good play by him. To me when the called that penalty in 2nd ot on the Fergus Goalie I thought that it should have taken them both It was goalie interference and then the goalie was trying to clear him out, yes he got hit in the back but that was good acting by Sartell player. What it take 5 sec till he got up? Should have been quinsidentals.
The penalty shot, no doubt that was a goal I could see from the other side of the rink. What I don’t understand is how no body on the ice had a rule book between the three refs and The FF coach that’s just their bad. Hopefully one day they will make it mandatory to have review.
It’s really a bummer for Fergus players to have to go down like that. It’s not right. Hopefully Sartell will take full advantage and enjoy rest of the year.

No relevence what so ever...once again it was not a missed call nor a bad call.....it was the complete WRONG call....not bad officiating, lack of knowledge in their part was all it is. WAY OFF SIDES to post the names of the Refs. You wonder why most people think officiating is sub par. No one wants to do it because of monkeys like you that post crap like this and go bonkers at games when a ref gets a call wrong or does a sub par job!!. Get over it!! The man made a mistake!! No one is F ing perfect.
In all respect to the official that made the call most referee games under different rules. Some if not all of our refs in the HS league referee USA Hockey (youth hockey), HS League games, and some even ref Collegiate or pro games. They all have different set of rules. Give the man a break!!
That being said.. It is the High School League where all your energy needs to go to overturn the game. The game is over and the officials have done their duties.. Right or Wrong they are done.
Do i feel bad for the FF kids.. NO.. Life ain't fair and people screw up everyday!! Teach your kids how to deal with these situations and how to better themselves!!
