Interesting data from the College Forum....

Minnesota's share of total D1 players from within the US has ranged between a low of 21% in 05-06 to a high of 31% in 06-07, with a consistent 26% in each of the last 2 years, and is on pace to be at about that same rate for the upcoming class. While Minnesota's share of all recruits around the word has varied slightly up and down from year to year, there does not seem to be any growth nor declining trend, with between 15-18% of all recruits.

Without the same historical data for Mass extracted (thanks to OnMAA for all the details above), the same degree of 5 yr trend analysis can't be done. However, over the last 3 years, Mass has accounted for about 15-16% of recruits in the US. YTD however, its share is only at 10%...hard to say whether this is a 1 year blip, or perhaps there will be a number of late recruits announced to a number of east coast schools.

In Canada, as noted by OnMAA, Ontario's share of Canadian recruits is on the rise. Up until 08-09, Ontario's share of Canadian recruits ranged between 45% and 47%.
However, in 09-10 Ontario accounted for 60% of Canadians to D1 schools. This is not a 1 year blip, as YTD recruits for 10-11 represent 72% of all Canadians to this point.

Where has Ontario's growth in recruits been sourced from?

Within Canada, BC historically accounted for about 10% of Canadian recruits between 05-08, but has been in decline since, dropping to 8% in 08-09 and 2% in 09-10...and again only one recruit has been announced todate for next year. Saskatchewan historically accounted for between 6-8% of Canadians to D1 between 05-09, but dropped to 1% in 09-10. Alberta is another region seeing severe decline, with only 2 recruits announced todate for 10-11, following a high of 17 in 09-10, and averaging 12 in the 4 years previous to that. No other regions in Canada are showing increases. Declines in recruits from these regions noted are consistent with relatively poor performances in U18 Nationals by the allstar teams in these provinces last 2 years, and placement by Ontario of its 2 teams within the final 4.

However, not all of Ontario's share growth in recruits is being sourced from within Canada, as Canada's share of all D1 recruits has continued to rise to the 40% range in the past 2 years. As a percentage of all recruits around the world to D1, Ontario's historical overall share of total recruits has been in ~17% range between 05-06 and 08-09, with 1-2% variations from year to year. However, in 09-10 Ontario's share of all D1 recruits jumped to 24%....and is even higher for announcements made for 10-11 at 28%.
The 7-10% growth by Ontario in the past 2 years of total D1 recruits has also come at the expense of US recruits.

It is my hypothesis that the recent growth in Ontario stems from 3 key factors, other than simply a couple of strong recruiting classes from the area.

(1) The existence of the PWHL in Ontario over the past 5 years has driven more highly competitive hockey in this area, improving player development relative to that available elsewhere. As well as a high level of hockey, players here get 60-75 games per year without having to travel extensively. Given the high concentration of talent in the area, it is not atypical to find D1 coaches at many league games giving Ontario girls get significant exposure.

(2) Development of specialized showcase events in Ontario, --particularly the Stoney Creek Showcase in September featuring every team in Ontario and others across N.A., and the Can-Am Cup Series featuring top Ontario and US teams--provide a very efficient means for D1 coaches to scout a high proportion of top prospective recruits from diverse places in one place at one time.

(3) Pressure on college budgets in the current economy may have affected recruiting budgets, in some cases significantly. As a result, trips to more remote locales (in both the US and Canada) in search of players would be more likely to be affected, giving Ontario girls (and possibly those from Minnesota and the east coast) ever more disproportionate exposure.

Joe,

How does this class rank compared to the past 3 years? I'm sure you have the numbers in your head.

Thanks.

Melvin I can't keep info like this in my head but at 30 for MN and 152 for the class in total out of a projected 205, we are in the range from past classes might even be a little ahead. Having watched and our daughter growing up with this class I always thought it was a great class and we would top 40 - still could happen as there are some good players not yet listed but it seems late especially how quick the year started - next year is projected to be a strong MN class.....here is some great history for those who want to know:

From OmAA and Hux on the college board interesting historical perspective:

Typically there are 28-33 Minnesotians on the list come the late signing period. One contributor to there being less at this point when compared to last year is that there were not any '91/'09s on this summer's U18 squad. As we saw in '07, the Minnesotians on the U18 Select team, (9 or 10 if I recall) were all college eligible and were committed come the early signing period.

Additionally, I think that some of the tapering off can be attributed to heavy scouting of the summer and fall tournaments in the East (Chowder Cup, Magog, NAHA, Stoney Creek, Assabet) which see limited participation by players from Minnesota. Also, as has been noted, there seems to be a fair increase in the number of players from full season teams (Canadian included) replacing the Minnesota high school and New England Prep players.

As promised, below is a link to a recent Ontario Blog discussion WRT this subject and posting the detailed numerical breakdown of recent year recuiting classes from that discussion:

http://www.network54.com/Forum/28302...Admissions+etc

The Canadian D1 recruit numbers the last two years were higher percentage wise (40% ) than those in the two years prior to that. This data certainly does not suggest a declining number of Canucks getting into D1. The numbers and details are below. Ontario consistently fields aout 45% of the overall recruit class.

05-06 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 211...129 USA (61%) , 79 CAN (37%) , 3 Int ( 1.5%) Ontario accounts for 46% of the Canadians – MN 27
06-07 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 201...128 USA (64%) , 62 CAN (31%) , 9 Int ( 5%) Ontario accounts for 47% of the Canadians – MN 40
07-08 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 164....95 USA (58%), 65 CAN (40%), 4 Int (2%) Ontario accounts for 44% of the Canadians – MN 28
08-09 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 208...119 USA (57%), 83 CAN (40%) , 6 INt (3%) Ontario accounts for 43% of the Canadians – MN 37
09-10 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 207 USA 113 (54%), CDN 87 (42%) Intl 7 (4%) – MN 32
10-11 D1 Recruits YTD: 152 USA 90 (59%), CDN 61 (40%) INTL 1 (1%) - MN 30

*** Not sure why the overall numbers were lower in 07-08, but the percentages of source were consistent with the other years.

What does it all mean?

We need more division I hockey programs for the women. Up 'til now I always thought every D-I caliber Minnesota girl found her way to a D-I roster...not knowing if that's actually true, but I think to this point it was pretty close to reality. The potential unfortunate reality I see is the chance for saturation, so to speak...when increasing numbers of division I caliber players (from everywhere, including Europe) result in some true D-I players being left out in the cold...including some from The State of Hockey. I hope we're not there yet, but things have definitely changed from the days when just a few teams were stacked with talent, and the rest weren't. I think before long, we're going to need at least a few additional teams to avoid this potential problem for the D-I player. First step...get rid of Red Berenson. A few Michigan universities are the perfect "fit" for expansion, IMO.

Ashley Stenerson of Moorhead is one great player not yet listed, and would be a great pickup for just about any team that still has a spot. With a hat trick in Moorhead's last game against North Wright County (a 5-4 win) she now has 41 goals this year, which is a little more than half of her team's 81 total. She is currently tied as the all-time career points leader at Moorhead, and on Tuesday night against Alexandria she will be looking to break the record.

Best of luck to her!

Stenerson is a great kid who I think will play D1 if she chooses to.

There are others who can play but have not yet committed D1 - Krisiti King, Lisa Tuuri, Shorty Salomen, Marah Sobczak at Stillwater, Chelsea Wiitwicke and Kayla Capistrant of Roseville, Kate Mason of Eagan, Katie Erickson of Elk River and Melissa Doyle at Hill Murray....these are just off the top of my head in the metro area - they are all talented - we could see 40 maybe.

Great news on a talented St. Paul player who was a leading scorer as a MN 8th grader playing for the St. Paul Blades. She went away to Culver in 9th grade on an 4 year academic scholarship but has played in MM on the Saints and the MN Jr Whitecaps in the summer. Congratulations!

I have heard from a few people now that Kristina King from the Stillwater Ponies is going to Maine next year. This would seem like a pretty solid pick up for their program as by all accounts she is a fantastic person and she is certainly a terrific hockey player. If this is true, congrats to all involved!
