Opt up???

Is there a place to find a list of the schools that have opted up to play AA?

If you go to the MSHSL site they have the school population list and you can figure it out.

The only AA schools up north are Moorhead and Brainerd.

St Cloud Tech if you count that as up north.

You can add Cretin to that list. Looks like they would be the biggest Class A school without opting up.

Wasn't it just last year or two years ago they were in A? Is there enrollment just floating around the cutoff every realignment year or did they really opt up, just curious.

Not sure which one your talking about, so I'll respond to as many as I can...

Bemidji opted up for the first time this year.
Roseau first opted up in the late 90s and has been there ever since.
Cloquet, Rapids, and Hill have (to my knowledge) always opted up.
Duluth East's enrollment dipped below the cutoff at some point in the past decade, but they stayed in AA. They will be back over the cutoff next year.
Benilde first opted up in 06 after winning the A tourney a few times.

And HSHW, I believe the enrollment cutoff chart is in error.

71 teams in AA
-8 known opt-ups
-1 in St. Peter et. al, which won an appeal after the sections were re-done to drop back into A.
=62 teams naturally in AA. That can't be right--there have to be 64 (minus one in St. Peter). Cretin is the smallest natural AA school.

With the exception of 2008, Bemidji has been in section 8AA as far back as 96-97 (that's as far as Lee's archives go). They were down in Class A in 07-08 for some reason but came back up.

I find it odd as well, but there are only 54 school in 5A football, for example. I'm not sure what formula they are using, but there are not necessarily 64 teams to a class.

I think there could be a late change in reported enrollment or a coop losing a school, gaining a school after the state determines who the AA teams are which could throw off the numbers by one or two. Just a guess.

There are supposed to be 64 in AA hockey: http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/news/method09-11.htm

There might be some other adjustment we don't know about--some other co-op that broke up after the changes. Or maybe it has something to do with East Ridge.

Bemidji has opted up every time except for 2 years ago.

One other requirement for a school that chooses to opt up. they must make a commitment to do so for four years. That is so a school won't cherry pick and opt up for one year when they have an exceptionally good team and plan to move back down after that.

Two schools that I can remember used to opt up and now don't...

Greenway and South St. Paul. I think Hibbing may have also opted up at one time.

I remember there was a lot of controversy in SSP when the school chose to no longer opt up.

Did Bemidji opt up before they whent to class A??? I assumed 2 years ago was the first year that they were small enough to be in class A.

Question. What (if any) rewards is there for a small school to opt up? Lets say on the Range like a Greenway use too, or say if Eveleth were to ever do it? Would there be any rewards / benefits for a small school to do it?

I think about that maybe some other "A" players would want a chance to play on a "AA" (if never done before) and possilby a chance at the state tournament. GRANTED, I know it would never happen over night.

My example: say Eveleth opted up to AA. Would anyone descent from Virginia or Hibbing (class "A" power houses) or Greenway or Ely ever open enroll to play on the team for the sake of playing "AA"?

I think one benefit would be having more people at your class AA section final than people at a class A state championship.

Rocketwrister, the real answer to your question is "no," there is no benefit. Kids want to play hockey. Outside of these discussion boards, very few people care about class. Whether it be football, basketball, hockey, or any other sport, state is state.

It is often more difficult to get there in AA, but if you are a ranked team, there are easy first round games in both classes and semi's and finals are usually difficult, with the exception of a couple years in recent history where the A final was better than the AA. Same ice, same size players, same talent.

I think this proves that you really don't know HS hockey at all.

There are many benefits to playing AA over A. Yes it is the same ice, but the talent and size aren't the same. The exposure isn't the same.

Even with the other sports you listed, the levels are all completely different. "State is state" is an ignorant statement to make. Go to the X on Wed night and go to the X on Thurs night. After that, if you can honestly tell me that "state is state" we might have to get you checked into a program somewhere. It isn't just about the bored and their opinions, there is a definite difference in the two. If you want to play with the best, go to AA. Every year there are some A programs that can skate with the AA, but year in, year out the AA will be the better talent and better teams.

Grand Rapids and Cloquet should make the move to single A where they belong due to enrollment. They do not have the numbers to keep up with the big AA schools any longer and will not have them for as far out as one can see. Let section 7 go to an all metro section besides Duluth East who can still compete with those teams.
