Pep Bands at Hockey Games

Do you love them? Or do you hate them? Does your team even let the band play at the rink?

Personally I hate them. In the Bloomington Ice Gardens (BIG) the sound of the drum line echos and is way to loud. You can not hear the fans and I doubt you can hear anything on the ice. Overall I think they can take away from the overall experience of being there.

However, that being said I love them at the State Tournament. The arena is big enough to not make the sound to loud and echo and you can hear other fans. It also helps that thousands of fans are cheering, which can drown out your band.

I know you don't really care what I think, so what do you think about them?

Nothing is better than a band at the State Tournament. As for the regular season? Depends on the arena and the game.

I do agree that it varies by the arena, who is playing, and how many people show up? Very good point, thanks for the response.

Pep bands are a tradition in MN hockey. We are seeing less and less of them all the time but a game without one wound't be right. They add to the atmosphere. Could you imagine going to a section final or state tourney without any pep bands? Imagine a Wild game with no organ or intermission music, it would probably be pretty quiet.

They are great come play off time and state. They really do add to those games however most home arenas for schools are too small for the bands. By that i mean it's way to loud. I leave the rink and my ears are buzzing. They are great for outdoor venues like football games as well but i just think they are too loud to be playing in that small of an area.

Actually last game i was at where there was a band i was thinking that! I felt so bad for the kid playing right in front of the drums. He probably needed some advil!

As an arena employee we love the band. AHA's band is small but effective and Richfields is bigger and louder. When they are at the games it makes it feel more like a high school or college atmosphere.
We would love to have them every game.

It doesn't even sound like music when your in there, just ear splitting noise.

i played at richfield last year and they would play songs while i was playing and it was really annoying...so i say no to the bands

Most bands will not do that, our pep band prepares excerpts for breaks in play and time outs, and then they only play between periods.

One of the reasons I go to the Xcel at the end of the year is to witness high school hockey in such a great atmosphere. You know that you're at the state tournament when you hear the bands. If the Xcel didn't (almost) fill up every year and have the bands I would probably stay home and watch on TV.

I believe there is some kind of rule prohibiting this in most sports including hockey, in the mshsl.....likely should've been a warning and then a penalty to the team that the band represents.

In defense of the band, the director was not to hip on procedure for playing at a hockey game. They have new director and the band is playing much better.

As recently as 8 years ago Hill-Murray had a pep band at every home game and some away games. This was true for 25 years during the Frank Assenbrenner era (the guy in the green blazer). The now do an equal number of games for the 4 winter sports teams - girls and boys BB & hockey. They now only do 3 regular season games plus the playoffs and state. I miss them. Aldrich is much quieter w/o them. They try to spice it up with music over the PA but it's not the same. They will be there for the STA game next Saturday night. A few seasons ago they had an organist at a few games. That was also very cool.

I think that the bands do create a great atmosphere ,but only in big games, in my opinion. Although a bad thing about having them at games is that they can take up a whole section in the bleachers which can be a pain when it is a full house. I guess it really doesn't matter to me if a band is their or not but I do think that they are pointless and ear splitting during not very meaningful games when there is no one there.

They're great for sections and state, but for a regular season event in a smaller arena, it really sounds like a bunch of blaring noise. A good mix off someone's ipod - pumped through the PA - is just fine with me for those situations.

The team is playing for the school. The pep band adds to the school atmosphere.
