Niper-hawkfan, you are absolutely correct. It is much bigger than the sport of hockey. I watched Greenway play Sibley last night. The shots on goal were approximately 46 - 12. Sibley completely controlled the game. But, Greenway hung in there and never gave up. They actually had a couple of chances to tie the score late in the third period. An empty netter made it 4 - 2. Greenway barely had two lines. One of their defensemen didn't play so the starting goalie in the previous two games played defense. Why continue the program? Because enough kids want to play the game. Chisholm was never a hockey school, Greenway is. The program is very much part of the identity of the school. If the community and kids give up on the program, they are giving up on the school. One of the kids playing was told by his parents that he is on his own if he played hockey. No support, financial or otherwise. He is playing anyway. This is a good example of a more systemic problem in the school district. Greenway does have a bantam team and the numbers will start to increase. I don't know if Greenway will ever be competitive again, but these kids are showing a lot of character to commit to a team that has little hope of winning more than a few games. They will grow up to be much better people because of their sacrifice and commitment. Sometimes you are dealt a lousy hand in life, but you should try to make the best of it. These kids are. I have a lot of respect for them.
Im gonna give my 2 cents worth. What you seen was not the greenway hockey team last night. Im not gonna make excuses about the game the night before or the long bus ride. I think alot got taken out of their sails when they found out a defensemen wasnt gonna make the trip due to a prior committment. Speaking for if you dont think we have enough kids you are wrong, in 2 - 3 yrs greenway will be back to a regualr h.s team with 2 teams.

Genius, they are not winning many of those adjusted scheduled games. It was the right call for the AD to change the schedule due to talent pool and numbers.mnhockeynemn wrote:I don't get it, why have a team if your going to cancel all your games that have always been competitive with and play the smaller schools just for a win? Might make the win/loss record better but proves very little.

Re: Games against Chaska/Chan
Ouch, but on a different note it's good to see them playing. Like others have said before, it would be a shame to see another once proud iron range community have to throw in the towel. As far as combing with Grand Rapids is concerned, didn't those two times rivalry somewhat compare to rivalries such as Warroad/Roseau and Hill-Murray/WBL? That would be a sad day seeing those two combine programs...chrissimonsguy wrote:Both of those games were against the Chaska JV.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I was having a discussion about the Greenway team of 02 and I remember the obvious ones of Guyer and Sertich, but there was a third guy on that team that was a solid player. A real big guy, and I think he wore #22 or something. Does anybody know who that was and if he went on to play anywhere. Random and weird I know but starting to bother me.

He was another strong player on that team, and I actually totally forgot about him, but there was another guy. He was really big, like maybe 6'3" or something and played with Guyer on a line (in state anyway). I am almost positive he wore #22.Rocketwrister wrote:Wasn't that Cory Carlson; Two Harbors transfer your thinking of?
Good Call on Carlson though, I didnt even think of him.

Greenway reached the .500 mark with its 6-1 win over Ely. Yes, I know it is against weak programs, but considering the team almost didn't exist, I think they have shown improvement a lot of dedication and determination. They have a legitimate shot at the number 6 seed in Section 7A. Success is measured in different ways, and I think this year has been a success.

I agree, I take back what I said earlier in the year, I think greenway was proved itself especially in the past month. Especially with a very close 2-1 loss to a tough Fort Frances Muskies Team, that was beaten alot of quality teams and has only lost a handful of games this season.northernnett wrote:Agreed! This group of players will be remembered as the 2009-2010 team that kept Raider hockey alive. Numbers at the youth level are high; and teams are enjoying successful seasons. Look for Greenway Raider hockey to be a force in the future.
