Economic woes related to hockey
My crystal ball shows kids going back to public schools as parents struggle more and more with making ends meet, especially with losing an average of 30% of their home value in many areas.
So will Hill Murray, St Thomas Academy, Breck..ect....will they decline somewhat and will we see a resurgence in hockey power at public schools?
I see it happening.

I see just the opposite happening.Faceguard79 wrote:My crystal ball shows kids going back to public schools as parents struggle more and more with making ends meet, especially with losing an average of 30% of their home value in many areas.

Hockey is a very expensive sport, and families that have the money to send their kids to all these summer teams/programs/training also have the money to send their kids to private schools. As youth programs decline in numbers, that decline will also be felt at the public schools. Case in point....inner city teams forming co-ops and northern teams like Greenway struggling to field a team.
The rich get richer, or as some would say, the strong get stronger.

No question I think you are right as far as numbers. But remember 10-15 years ago alot of the best kids still went to privates as hockey is a money sport.Faceguard79 wrote:My crystal ball shows kids going back to public schools as parents struggle more and more with making ends meet, especially with losing an average of 30% of their home value in many areas.

Some of the private schools are known for there hockey. Just as Cretin is known for there Football. Cost aside, if they want someone to play at there school, a way will be provided. Case in point. I saw FSN interview Cretins super star D1 Lineman. As soon as he spoke in the interview, it was apparent he wasn't there on an English major. This is a school that is suppose to be high on education. They carry banners to the rink that spell public school wrong touting their better education. I guess when the requirement for star athetes is there, standards and money becomes no issue. As far as the sport of hockey is concerned, yes I believe all the youth programs will see areduction in new players based on the expenses.
The economy probably has little to do with high school hockey other than school budget cuts. High school hockey is far cheaper than youth hockey so if anything you might see more 9th graders forgoing bantams for high school. From what I've noticed many outstate teams, Mineapolis, St. Paul public and first ring suburb schools have been struggling with numbers for quite a few years now, this will do nothing to change that and possibly kill some programs 5 -10 years down the line as youth hockey costs continue to skyrocket further hurting numbers.
Well there have been numerous transfers to Marshall (or The Marshall School of Duluth as they call themselves, or CheapShot U as Virgina fans might say) 1 from both DE and Denfeld, with 1 I believe from the range, and tutition is somewhere around $10,000 so so far up here, not being affected, at least on the HS level from what I can see.
Go Hounds.

Even assuming your conspiracy theory is right, which is highly doubtful, why would that be a problem? MOST parents are still paying for their kid to attend a private school, vs. nothing for a public school, PLUS they are paying full property taxes to support the public school even though they derive no direct benefit. If anything, the current system benefits parents of public school kids because they are in effect subsidized by the private school kids' parents. If the PRIVATE school chooses to give the parents of low income students a break, whether they are athletes or not, that's their decision.Rookie19 wrote:You guys don't seroiusly believe that all those kids that get recruited to play at the PRIVATES are paying Full Tuition. I would bet most are paying less than half what the rest of the kids at their school are paying. They find some fund or just give them reduced tuitions.
That said, I would bet the vast majority of private school athletes receive NOTHING in the way of reduced tuition. Feel free to prove me wrong if you can back it up with some facts.
